I'm thinking this thread in particular will be pretty quiet when it comes to Parra supporters

Why? Our previous admin f**ked up. There's no hiding it.

All we can do is support the current admin and put on our brave faces to weather the storm.

I'm fed up, though.

I reckon most of the people that commented have read the thread title and not the article.

Do people realize this happened 6 years ago and there are no charges laid or any investigations from the NRL ?

A messy trail for Third Party payments which when I last checked are still allowed by the NRL. Not that any of us want to be associated with Obeid and we have not been squeaky clean under the previous administration of our old board, but its a typical example how the shallow minded can be easily lead by the media.

Good chance that Parra will start on -4 points next year now I guess

Interesting comment.

The current cap issues are with our second tier cap mainly due to our injury list but I'm sure you can explain how this is linked to what happened about 6 years ago to our NRL team.

I'm all ears

I guess the fact that we probably sell more newspapers and clickbait than any other NRL club is what keeps some of these journos in a job.

They dont have to reveal their sources.

How convenient.

It does make you feel a tad better when your club isn't the only total basketcase in the NRL. Well in, Parra.

This is kind of interesting.

If a club pays for a training camp to the US for 2 weeks for all their players, is this legal?

What about if a club director organises some mates rates, but no payments are ever made?

What if a club owns a property and uses it to house players for free?

If none of this is contracted, just perks of the job, how can it be illegal?

I don't understand why any club would deal in under the table payments when there are so many ways to financially benefit players without cheating.

Alot of this stuff is a fringe benefit for tax purposes.

One would hope the salary cap auditor requests the FBT return and workings every year.

The clubs may lie to the NRL but defrauding the ATO is a whole other issue.

Pretty sure every club has done something along these lines, they're just not under heavy scrutiny dealing with shady characters.

As long as you're lodging everything you have to to the NRL then it's just bending the rules.

No they don't get the tax records of the players. Probably for privacy reasons as players can have other income that the NRL doesn't need to know about.

I agree though that tax records would be the easiest way to check on salary cap cheating because like you said, not reporting payments to the NRL won't get you into much trouble legally but lying to the ATO certainly will.

When the CBA is next negotiated, I would like the NRL to offer a generous cap increase but in return open players financial and tax records up to the salary cap auditors

The geniuses at the NRL only just found out. They're onto it now:

The #NRL has announced it will investigate allegations that undisclosed third party payments have been made to players at @TheParraEels.

Awaits the "scum club, kick them out of the comp" comments Melbourne fans have had to put up with for the last few years.

At the time the Storm only existed because of millions in extra payments from the NRL. The Eels can exist without extra funding. And the Storms actions might have cost other teams a premiership. The Eels have been the worst team over the last 5 years. People only have pity for them.

You are correct, the NRL do not get the tax records of the players. They have no legal right to access them. They can only compel the clubs to turn over their books because of their licence agreements. That is why, for example, the NRL had problems with its salary cap probe into the Broncos - they had no legal right to access the Leagues Club's books.

As to what you suggest, it has already been run up the flagpole and the Players Association has said quite vehemently they will not countenance it.

ah so being cheats only matters if you actually are successful through that cheating? Righto.

Well it still should be punished. If proven I hope they lose points next year but the average bloke in the street won't care about a team cheating their way to a wooden spoon.
