Parramatta Eels sign Josh Papalii for 2014

Jake I have no inside knowledge but I'm generally a positive person. Yeah I think he will not renege on our deal.

This is the way I'm thinking ... We are giving him 500k, raiders offered 400k and they are now going to get 3rd party deals involved so they will be able to match the offer.
Factor in that he is settled in merkin town and I believe he's staying. No need to come to sydney if your're on the same coin.

Only thing that would have him stick with Parra's deal is if he's an honorable man who sticks with his word. You can always tell the measure of a man if he sticks by his word.

I think this was in reference to the situations faced under the old system.

that was my first post on this, that the old system ended up with a heap of behind the scenes "illegal" transfer activity that was clearly occuring because of the mass of deals signed up once the deadline passed.

the concept of rd 13 matching rule was introduced because the old system was impossible to police

Personally, my optimistic nature tells me we will see Papalii wearing Blue and Gold in 2014.

i do think that the Round 13 ruling is a farce that needs to be done away with.
Why not give incumbent clubs until round 13 to re-sign who they want and then all un-signed players are on the open market for other clubs to chase.

if as a club you haven't decided by round 13, you lose (or is it loose as so many illiterate posters keep typing)

That's pretty much what it was before except replace 'Round 13' with the 'June 30 deadline' which they got rid of because they couldn't enforce clubs and managers sneaking around.

I'd just like to see no announcements being made until Round 13 just for the sake of integrity. The club will look very foolish announcing Papali's signing now if he does renig and he has 3 months to do so.

To me this sounds exactly like the Sandow saga in 2011. Look what happened there.

I would be very surprised if Papali reneges, purely for the fact that his manager would already have told him that the Raiders have until round 13. So why put pen to paper if you know that?

I agree with other posters - if the player signs a contract (NOT a letter of intent), then that should be it.

Putting pen to paper is an insurance, and can be used as leverage.

Raiders won't be mucking around from here.

I think the only people that know already how this will pan out is Josh, his family and his manager. Whilst Parra can be confident based on the discussions Ricky, Nolan and Edwards have had with him and Canberra can be confident based on an assumption that if they match the $ he will stay, there is more to signing a contract than just the $.

As someone has stated above, a true test of character will be whether or not this 20 year old 'man' looked anyone from Parra in the eye when he signed this contract and said "see ya in Nov 2013" and whether he wants to be known as someone whose word, handshake and signature is good or not.

And if not, is he type of person we want at Parra anyway?

It's all a bit of a mess really. This kind of crap seems to follow us around frankly and only makes it harder to sign the next bloke.

I thought Josh (Massoud) would love uncertainty and confusion, it's his bread and butter

Why don't we do a deal with Hayne, and then get him to sign a deal with a rival club. Then at the last minute come R13 we sign him up. This would have the added benefit of stuffing up some other clubs recruiting and cap.

Can you source him out and knee cap him for us? Or cut off a finger of one of his lesser clients to send him a message not to f*ck us over?

Too much?

Hahahah if its the same guy I think it is i'm pretty sure I do know a few people who know him. Haven't seen around league in Brisbane in years so i'm not sure....
