Parramatta Eels sign Josh Papalii for 2014

. Raiders legend Mal Meninga would love Josh Papalii to stay in Canberra, but won't be twisting his arm to backflip on his deal with Parramatta.
Contrary to reports he would be the ace up the Raiders' sleeve in convincing the emerging enforcer to turn his back on the Eels, Meninga said he hadn't spoken to Papalii about the switch, but would give advice if asked by the 20-year-old.
The Raiders remain hopeful they can convince Papalii to renege on his contract with the Eels before the round-13 deadline and agree to terms for an extended deal in Canberra.

Papalii told his Raiders teammates not to believe everything they read, hinting he may be having second thoughts about joining the Eels.
The Raiders are seeking third-party sponsorships to increase their offer to Papalii, with Meninga making no secret of where he hopes one of the most damaging forwards in the NRL ends up.
''Being a Raiders man, I'd love to see Josh stay at the club and fulfil his potential there,'' Meninga said.
''They haven't had the success the club deserves, so it'd be good for him to be involved in a successful era for the Raiders.
''I don't think they're too far away from that, so it'd be nice for him to stick around.''
Triple-premiership captain Meninga rejoined the Raiders last year as a club ambassador, with his role including assisting with player retention and recruitment.
''If they [Raiders players] want to come to me and have a yarn about their career or footy, that's for them to initiate,'' Meninga said.
''I haven't had much to do with Josh from a career point of view.
''I've had a few talks about Queensland and how he's going, that's more casual than anything.''
The Queensland coach also cleared the air about Papalii's controversial switch from New Zealand to the Maroons late last year.
Papalii had signed a letter of intent to play for New Zealand after he had represented the Junior Kiwis, only to change his allegiance to the state he moved to at the age of six and where he played all his junior football.
''Contrary to belief, I asked what he wanted to do, and I didn't put any pressure on Josh at all to make that decision,'' Meninga said.
Meninga said Papalii's age meant he was going to be guided by the people he trusts and questioned the role his manager, Col Davis, played in the contract dilemma.
The NRL doesn't register contracts with rival teams until after round 13, a clause several players have taken advantage of in the past few seasons.
The most recent case is utility Tim Moltzen, who signed with the Dragons before changing his mind and remaining with the Wests Tigers.
Raiders captain Terry Campese hopes Papalii follows suit and becomes an integral part of the Green Machine's plans for years to come. ''It's not a positive for Parramatta until round 13 when it's a proper, binding contract,'' he said.

Not much we don't already know. Not sure why they mention Tim moltzen case as an example, I thought that case was totally different - tigers told him he could leave if he found a better deal, which he did with the dragons. However for some reason tigers forgot to finalise the termination of tim's contract with them, which the dragons were unaware off. Several months later after lui was sack tigers decided they no longer wanted to let Tim go thus as his original contract with the tigers was not officially terminated - the dragons were up the sh?t creek.

I think they use Moltzen since there's never been a case of someone signing, then using the round 13 clause.

Doesn't mean Papali won't be the first :sarcasm:

Hell this bloke better be worth it ! He is being talked up like the second coming. It will be very disappointing if he comes and plays like a busted and in the interim we lose some very talented junior players in the process. Edwards and co know what they are doing in both the short term and long term recruitment. They WILL have a plan B and a plan C if this Demi god doesn't grace our team. We all need to chill out.

Mate it's not like the bad old days, we have a professional organisation now from the board room to the coaching staff. They will have intensive plans regarding recruitment and retention, personally I would rather they kept those plans secret rather than telling the general public.

IF they are prepared right now, i'm not asking for those plans to be made public, i'm just hoping that they are prepared.

recent records don't allow me to set my expectations at benefit of doubt like you clearly

Mate we are well and truly past plans A,B and C. Even Papalli would have to be somewhere near the middle of the alphabet.

As a member do I have to get my tickets at the ground? Or can I get them online? Because when I look at the round 1 tickets on ticketek it doesn't have a members option

In previous years you had to login in as a member via the Eels website then follow the link to to buy tickets, then that brings you to the Ticketek page with discounted tickets.

From the article about SBW's contract being unregistered.

The NRL's contracting system has come under scrutiny following the length of time it took for Israel Folau's Parramatta offer to be scrutinised. Frustrated by the delays, Folau signed with the Waratahs.
And Josh Papalii has until round 13 to decide whether to honour his deal to join the Eels from next year or to remain with incumbent club Canberra.

Raiders CEO to 'punch away' for Papalii
David Barbeler
11:07 AEST Fri Mar 1 2013

Sick of losing some of their best young talent, Canberra Raiders chief executive Don Furner has vowed to keep battling to the end to retain emerging enforcer Josh Papalii.
The Raiders hold hope they can convince 20-year-old Papalii to knock back a reported three-year deal worth more than $1 million with Parramatta before the round-13 deadline.
But Furner acknowledged Canberra was "an easy place to target" for rival NRL clubs.
"We're just going to keep punching away and keep fighting to keep him," Furner told AAP at the Raiders' season launch.
"He knows how important he is to us. Hopefully we'll make him change his mind.
"He likes it here and his family is here.
"He's a great kid. He could stay here for a couple more years and he'd only be coming off contract at 22 or 23, so he's well placed."
Papalii enjoyed a breakthrough season last year, highlighted when he battered rugged Cronulla and NSW State of Origin skipper Paul Gallen in a memorable elimination final clash.
His sensational form meant the New Zealand-born lock had to make a choice on allegiance, opting to turn his back on his country of birth to be in contention for Queensland Origin selection.
If lured to the Eels the loss would be a big blow for the Raiders who developed Papalii through their Souths-Logan feeder-club pathway.
Furner said the club had become frustrated by the number of talented young players pinched from the nation's capital by rival clubs.
"We're an easy place to target. It's cold. People take them to the beach and say 'how good is this?'" Furner said.
"For years I've pushed that there should be some type of concession for developing juniors.
"It's frustrating because we put a lot of time and a lot of money into junior development and we could quite easily sit back and just pinch blokes at 23 or 24 and let some other club do the development."
Furner said the Raiders had recently changed their development strategy and started focusing more on recruiting country kids, who generally seemed to prefer living in Canberra over the bigger cities.

Sounds like they want him to stay for less by playing guilt trip card.

Staying for less is not allowed right ? The Raiders need to match the signed contract dollar for dollar ?

Apparently that's the rules.

At least those were the rules when we were the club who wanted to keep a player under that clause...

Raiders might be able to manipulate the schularay cap to get him for less?

Having said that, in the article, it reads as if they want him to turn his back on the Parramatta deal (ie, the one he already signed) --> doesn't say (or even suggest) they'll get him for less money.
