Agree, it looks a bit odd to have such a "funky" building immediately next to a heritage building ... not terribly complimentary .... but maybe it will turn out ok???

Seems odd that the building appears to cover the rear of the town hall?? Surely not.

Yes. Apparently.

BTW, that's not the building I posted about yesterday.
I assume Twiz was saying yuk to the building behind this one (the one that had the NAB symbol on it), to which I was referring.
The picture above is the is of the new Parramatta Civic Centre.

I just dont like the ultra modern look, but that's just me.

Certainly raises a few questions, a lot of DAs dont get approved if the development is not consistent with its environment and it looks out of character next to the town hall.

The cantilever being built over the top of the town hall is curious, normally you cant build over anyone else's air space as they own it and it also prevent them from increasing the height, although its heritage listed its still their air space. Sometimes they give permission but at a cost.

Also any fire in the town hall will quickly spread to the cantilever section above it and the heritage listed building cant have its exterior altered to prevent the fire spreading, like adding fire sprinklers.

Times are changing.

Twiz, the Town Hall is owned by the Parramatta Council.
The building behind it which is being built over the top of it will be the new Parramatta Civic Centre, (as I said above) owned also by Parramatta Council. (Council chambers, new library and child care)
I'm reserving judgement on the Civic Centre.

Here is a layout of the new Town Centre, with an explanation of what is going where.

1PSQ - Western Sydney University campus to be completed 2016 with classes due to start in the first semester of 2017.

3PSQ - 35,000 square metres of a grade office

4PSQ & 6PSQ - 2 commercial towers Walker

5PSQ - Town Hall and Civic building - designed by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture and Australian firms Design Inc and Lacoste + Stevenson.

8PSQ - Aspire residential - 70 levels Walker

No 1 - University of Western Sydney - is complete and operating.

No 2 - commercial space, is also complete.

No. 3. NAB Building.

No 5 - Civic Centre.

No 8 - Aspire residential.

Wow - I really need to get down there and check out the new Town square. Looks amazing.

I'm used to just seeing a laneway next to the Town Hall. Fantastic.

Tbh mate, there's not a lot to see at the moment.
It's mainly just a big building site.

Well the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
