I love the podium design on this development.....

Design selected for Parramatta towers
feb 1 architecture au
Located at 34 Hassall Street, plans for the development incorporate two towers, up to 44 storeys, containing 600 residential apartments
as well as commercial spaces for retail and workspaces.

Turner’s design for the towers features a raised podium, which connects the two towers, and features an elevated courtyard garden.
The ground floor will include retail and hospitality frontages for commercial tenants.
Flexible workplace tenancies are intended for the levels above, with intended allocations for a fitness centre and medical practice.

Turner director Stephen Cox said the proposed development is a “microcosm” of the local neighbourhood. “When you think of Parramatta,
you think of a dense urban centre, surrounded by parks, a river and public transport,” Cox said.

Developer Deicorp said it unanimously selected Turner’s design for the “permeability of the ground floor plane” and the “lyrical nature of the podium design”.

Turner’s design also sought to create a “park-like experience” through the building, Cox said, giving residents and visitors the sense of being surrounded
by verdant vegetation. View points have been strategically aligned with nearby points of interest, like the river and parklands, to help inhabitants
to feel connected to the outdoor environment.

The developer is due to submit a development application in February.

Loosely related to development (and waiting two years for planning permision etc) and not in Parramatta - but I found this really inspiring in terms of what's posible when people think a bit more broadly than their pathway to an end outcome.

A post from another website.......

"Apparently the union model of operation for the D sets is having full driver control of the passenger doors (meaning they operate the same as any other suburban train - all doors open at every station regardless). The original operation involved having buttons on each of the doors to individually open them when pressed, which would then automatically close after a set time (in essence keeping the doors shut when they're not needed). Same as the current citadis trams. This is pretty standard on most long distance commuter/intercity trains around the world. The union for some unknown deluded reason, wants this feature removed entirely

Absolutely fcking geniused this union lot. It seems not only are they frightened to death by technology such as cameras, they're also terrified at the prospect of having individual buttons to open doors."

And this pretty much sums up the RTBU.
Protecting jobs and costing us tax payers shit loads of our tax $$. These trains were purchased by the govt because they would be modern, technologically advanced like the REST OF THE WORLD, and reliable. This is partly where the costs overuns above are coming from.
Well f**k them.
Bring on more metro's which actually save shit loads of our money when in full operation. And invest in new technolgy like this, which the current Lib's did. It is a shame it has been sabotaged.
The D sets should have been running and providing commuters with a modern day service more than 12 months ago, and the 50 year old V sets retired by now.
But hey, there's a State election coming up. So let's do everything we can to make sure the party that has invested heavily in infrastructure can't get back into power, just so we can stop a few train guards being repositioned from the back of the train to elsewhere in the system or god forbid, losing their jobs and saving taxpeyers money.

It still hasn't been explained to me why the RBTU are quite happy for Vic trains to not require guards, but NSW has to?
More than happy to hear why that is.

The Suity_Gronk consortium could do it for $2b and deliver ahead of schedule. Get a quote together mate.

And still make a couple of hundred $million each!

The Gabba is 42000 capacity. I think the new one will be around 50000.
To knock down and rebuild Stadium Oz to 70-75000 was estimated at 1.5 billion.

2.7 billion for an extra 8000 seats. Sounds legit. They'll justify the cost because they have to knockdown East Brisbane State School and build a new one on another site.
