You could find faults with just about every potential coach....

Taylor - Punched on with a player on mad Monday, sacked & hasn't been offered an NRL gig since. Very little finals coaching experience.

Smith - Despite all the success, never won a premiership.

Murray - See Smith.

Stuart - Started well at both the Roosters & Sharks but left both clubs in dissaray. Underperformed as Australian coach.

Brown - Could never win a comp with Saints despite all the talent at his disposal plus the face slapping incident.

At the end of the day any of the above would be a step-up from our current coach.

The board probably know the fan favourite would be Jason Taylor.

Personally I'd give him the caretakers role for the rest of the year with a long term contract there if he performs (similar to what happened when he took over from Smith). Brian Smith or Graham Murray as coaching director.

I have a feeling it will all end in tears with Sticky...

Sorry Casper, but Poupou's icon is funny.

Suity

Nothing to be sorry about Suity, it was funny and Poo Poo is entitled to his opinions and whatever sense of humour he can dredge up.

Very good article and while Kearney may not be the right answer, neither is papering over the cracks. It will take time to correct the current situation but many will not see the forest for the trees.
In Eden which is somewhere out Parramatta way, many can't see the trees for the naked women running around.

Colonel, I always look forward to your posts. When it comes to footy and our club you consistently provide lots of very good insights and make a lot of practical sense. I hope you are wrong about Suart already being appointed by the board because I feel that a combo of Brian Smith as coaching director and Jason Taylor as head coach would be one of our best long-term options. Obviously it's going to take plenty of $$$$$ to get them both back to our club but I again feel that getting both of them is imperative to sorting out whatever issues still remain around the club and for providing long term direction, fostering our juniors and bringing plenty of fireworks when certain players or the squad require it. I have no idea how Nolan would get on with Smith & Taylor but hope that they can and continue the good work Nolan is doing around the Juniors, etc. To save wasting the big dollars sacking Kearney, maybe the board, Smith & Taylor can keep Kearney on the books looking after "The Academy" and other junior matters. What are your thoughts on all this?

Casper I'm no accountant, but I'm not sure that paying three people to do a job currently being done by one would involve much saving of money.

Whether we pay out Kearney $450,000++ or keep him on contract salary makes not that much difference. If Kearney is a very good bloke maybe he won't have any pride issues and just might be willing to stay on with the club to look after the fostering of our large base of juniors/footy clubs. It seems we need an experienced coaching director like Brian Smith to help finally get rid of the cultural issues over the next two years or much sooner while Jason Taylor looks after the running of the NRL squad. Our club needs a major overhaul and this includes keeping the board completely out of the way of Smith, Taylor & Nolan so they can run the footy club side of things professionally. There seems to be many fires that need to be completely stopped and Brian Smith is the right type of guy (with or without Kearney - and includes Nolan) who could get out amongst the junior network as well as spotting and checking out new players, juniors or not, from whereever and helping to sort out all the major issues streaming to and from the Leagues Club operations, Footy Club operations, management, etc, etc. We need to throw whatever money is required to have the right man-power to sort out our club ASAP. Assuming success starts rolling back ASAP, lots of money will start rolling back into the club too and this will help compensate for these overheads. Kearney will finish up end of 2013 unless Smith & Taylor wish to keep him on a reduced contract-salary. I feel the board need to do this ASAP. Smith & Taylor know the Eels club very well and if I remember correctly Kearney knows Taylor from their playing days at Wests and should have lots of respect for Brian Smith too. To me, this is the way to go, the smartest way to go.

do you think the potential signings that have been rumoured, hinchcliffe and jeremy "am I 27 or 32" smith would possibly be lost of kearney was shown the door? ... and do we care?

No. And no. Seriously, why would anyone want to play for this imposter?

He also signed a bunch of youngsters like Albert Kelly, Nathan Gardner, Josh Cordoba, Broderick Wright. He had the same plan as Kearney... sign and wrap up a bunch of Parramatta's young and up and coming players. The only difference being he worked for a different club when he did that.

This is what I'm worried about - the board re-signing all the deadwood while they decide on who the next bandaid coach will be.

It wouldn't surprise me. And I reckon he'd probably go alright playing on one more year too. I think the teling sign him and SK don't get on was in the post match press conference a month or so ago where Kearney was asked a question and gave his stunned mullet expression and Hindy just pulled the microphone away saying "I'll answer this one". Surprise surprise we haven't seen Hindy in a post match media conference since.

I hear u brother.

Resigning b smith, mk and fui is a f**king disgrace.

We need more signings like Morgan, lassalo, Roberts and tautai. Even to an extent sandow.

f**k me, we could win a comp or two with those type of players.
