These two statements seem to contradict one another.
Good point. The Roosters, much like the Stotm and more recently the Panthers and Parra, do seem to have to shed players. Just for the Storm, and again more recently the Panthers, that is to keep the players they have developed and made into stars, while for the Roosters that is to import the next shiny new toy.

They haven’t recently though. I can’t remember any big signings since Tedesco.

Unless you count the premiership winning star Paul Momirovski.

Remind me where he started first grade?

Brandon Smith doesn’t count?

Well if you want to get technical, the 2002 Bulldogs that got docked 37 points and fined 500k just took paycuts to stay together so when they won the comp in 2004 they pretty much had the same side that got done for cheating the cap, not much difference lol

Agreed. We could also talk about QLD's dominance in Origin and the connection to Melbourne's systemised cheating. But its a bow most are unwilling to draw.

Added Andrew Ryan too in 2003.

Given Momo’s slide in form and standing of his team this year compared to last, he is the cautionary tale why players shouldn’t chase the coin at inferior clubs….

@ColdWetPanther correctly pointed out the B Smith signing. Although I think it’s only for one year?

Your list is a little underwhelming. Not exactly superstars.
Sualli was reportedly offered a million by rugby….

Im not sure if Cronk was just before or just after Teddy but between Cronk, Teddy, Smith and Sualli, that is averaging roughly one highly sought after player every year.

2018 Teddy and Cronk joined

Very few sides can add half a rep spine to their side

Throw in Keary who won a comp at Souffs too

Suaali is a stretch. But even if we include him, it’s not exactly a huge list in the last 5 years.

They basically made 2 massive (and excellent) signings in 2018, and have been bagged ever since. One of those players had already decided to leave his club, and was looking to settle in Sydney. The other was playing with the (at the time - sorry tigers fans) worst managed roster in the comp. The Roosters also managed to move on the worst clutch “star” in the game. Smart recruitment really.

Why is Sualli a stretch? He was with Souths (who wanted to keep him and offered him decent coin), was chased by union who were supposedly ready to offer him really good coin and the Roosters got him. Whether he ends up being a superstar or not is largely irreverent; the fact is he was something the Roosters wanted and they got him.

And I don’t think your qualifications around Cronk and Teddy disprove the point. Yes, Cronk wanted to move to Sydney but there are 8 other clubs he could have gone to. Maybe Teddy wanted out of the Tigers for good reason; but there are 14 other clubs he could have gone to. It’s always the Roosters. And it goes back well before Teddy/Cronk.

That is the reason why when a thread like this comes up people are resigned to it ending up with the Roosters getting their man. Up until last year I respected the Roosters for it, but I do admit this has evolved to jealousy after a) I see my club bleeding juniors to keep other juniors who have become superstars and b) you then see the current NZ hooker choose the Roosters over other suitors due to ‘what the Roosters can provide over and beyond football’.
