WA Reds is the 'new' name. Apparantly wa associates the name with rl and red is a symbol of war or some crap.

Are you serious?

All this time they've been saying "we're definitely NOT using the name Reds as it has been done and has negative images", then they go and use it anyway?

What about the hundreds of suggestions they'd received from the Rugby League public? I'm happy they have a name now, and I'm REALLY happy they've gone with the WA part of the name (instead of Perth or Western), but I think they could have gone with a better choice.

Still, in 12months time, I will be in the stands doing the COME ON YOU REEEDDDDDSSSS!
Haven't done it for 12 years!

Rugby league Reds are back, on war footing
8th February 2007, 8:30 WST

Western Reds might be gone from rugby league but the WA Reds are on the way in.

WA Rugby League chief Geoff Baldwin last night revealed the name of the local team to enter the secondtier Jim Beam Cup next year as part of a long-range plan to restore a Perth side to the National Rugby League.

Baldwin said the Reds name had been retained because the public automatically associated it with rugby league, and local followers of the sport associated it with unfinished business.

He revealed that the logo of the new team was based on that of the old Western Reds.

The intention was for the Reds to be back in the national competition by 2012.

“Coincidentally, the name WA Reds results in an acronym of ‘war’ and for the new team it is appropriate as we embark on a full and measured assault on the eastern seaboard to bring WA back into the national spotlight of rugby league,” he said.

“Five years ago we started the journey back to the NRL. Our initial goals were to develop a strong local competition and become financially secure, and that’s done.

“Now we’re into stage two, to form a WA team and improve to the point we can present to the NRL a case they can’t argue against.”

The new team’s head coach, Chris Dever, and conditioning coach Matt Fuller are former Western Reds players and have launched a development program to get local players up to speed for next year’s entry into the NSW-based competition.

The Sydney Roosters sent a contingent of NRL players, including Brad Fittler and captain Craig Fitzgibbon, to help kick off the new side at last night’s launch.

WARL general manager Bill Nosworthy recently returned from a recruiting trip which netted former North Queensland Cowboys player Michael Fairweather.

Nosworthy also persuaded eight players who had represented WA at junior level to return home, including Newtown premier grade player Ryan Dixon, South Sydney under-19 member Jacob Buck and Jamie Lamaro, who played for Central Coast in the Jim Beam Cup.

“The local clubs have been doing a lot of recruiting themselves and there will be at least 20 players from other States playing in our competition this year in the hope of breaking into the Reds,” Nosworthy said.

Former Brisbane, Canberra and Cronulla player Darren Matt was on the verge of committing to Perth when he got a lucrative one-year deal to play in Wales.

While the WARL could at first glance be accused of lacking creativity, there are some positives. Existing name recognition, a link to the old club, and it will make for a feel good story if/when they are readmitted to the NRL. "After being unfairly excluded from the NRL for the past 15 years the Reds are back and are looking for revenge..."

Red is also the one colour that is not used predominantly on any other clubs primary playing strip so they should have a relatively free rein in regards to jersey design.

If you take a careful look at the above picture you can see the club logo on the projector in the background. It looks to be a variation on the original with a change in the lettering and the removal of the sun from the background.

C'mon Reds! Great, great news for all league lovers in WA and right throughout Australia. Here's hoping that in the not too distant future we see a Souths vs WA Reds at ME (or any NRL club for that matter).

Reds?? Whatever happened to put in the names and we'll pick one out. Looks like it was decided from before.

To be fair it was never ever going to be a blind pick out of hat. They'd risk ending up with the WA Douches or WA Turdsandwiches. That said, in hindsight I'm sure it was always was going to be Reds unless something phenominal was suggested. Obviously the WARL still owns the copyright on the Reds name and logo so that made it a cheap and easy option for them.

I thought the ARL held the rights? Thats why all the Super League clubs couldn't sport thier logos during the breakaway comp?

Doubt the ARL would stop them using it though.

Welcome back W.A.R.!

The WARL had nothing to do with the Western Reds club as far as ownership or the running of it went. They worked with eachother in WA for the benefit of Rugby League, but they had no say in the running of the other one as far as I'm aware.

As far as the logo is concerned, I obviously noticed 'WA' in place of 'Western', and I noticed the logo is the variation of the proper Reds logo (if I can find pics of each, I'll show you the comparison), but I'll admit I didn't even realise the big yellow sun wasn't there! Mind you, I only looked relatively quickly at work this morning in the paper, and although the photo they used was rather large, it was black and white - yellow wouldn't show up particularly well anyway. Personally, the yellow sun completes the logo, and if you're gonna rehash the old logo, go the whole hog and just leave it in.

There's gonna be quite a few people glad the name is the Reds and the logo is virtually the same. Now people who spent money 12 years ago on Western Reds merchandise can start using/wearing them again because after a decade of dust collecting, they're current again! I've got a 1995 'Cash Converters' jersey which -although a wee bit tight- still fits. Unfortunately, the Cash Converters logos are cracked and flaking off at the slightest movement, so I doubt I'll be wearing it much!

Here's that logo comparison I mentioned:
Western_Reds.jpg
200px-Westernreds_1995.jpg

Left: the 'Proper' logo. Right: The 'non-proper' logo (of which it appears the WA Reds logo is based off).
The logo on the right looks -and to me has always looked- like a draft. The left-hand one in this instance would be the finished version.
Note the nose, mouth, eyes, and the hand that's extended out. There are a couple more differences, but they are only slight and not worth mentioning here.
