He made another announcement this year too which I linked

don’t blame Sydneysiders this is coming from the mayor of cairns

and it solves all the problems of a png nrl team and is way better than sharing with Darwin

the only issue will be complaints from the cowboys about this eating into their territory

once they add Perth nz2 and Brisbane 3 then Adelaide and png are the prime candidates for teams
It's fine to quote local pollies but when you start adding your thoughts, you're so far out of your depth, you're just embarrassing yourself.

Nowadays kids have a wide variety of sports they can choose to play/participate in as well as well as have a career in if good enough - gone are the days of one choice depending on the seasons or kids being forced to play one sport only as parents didn't want them playing any other sport.

For the oldies on here who can remember their school days what sports were available - not just at school but on weekends.

It may have have been the case of Boys playing League and Cricket and Girls playing Netball and Softball with an Athletics and Swimming carnival thrown in for good measure.

Now there is a choice of Football/Union/League/AFL for Boys and Girls along with Cricket/Baseball/Softball/Netball/Athletics/Swimming/Field Hockey etc for an example.

Well your original comment would make more sense if you knew if was a local politician saying this

see now you just look like you have no idea blaming people who read the article and agree with it

better luck next time

How well spoken is the man.

Christian Welch should be in the media as much as possible as he comes across as a credit to our game.

The women is the tough one, Very hard to get a timeslot that suits everyone. As such they can't bring money into the game

NRL's committed to having a professional womens comp so it now needs to fund it. Bit late to be thinking about if it can bring money in tbh.
Its pretty poor the ARLC are expecting those women players to be playing in a RLWC with no contracts in place for next season, as Welch said if they got injured they are screwed.

Actually he is a very well spoken man, but most if the time he is dribbling, he should stick to carting up hit ups properly, instead of mooching on the sidelines after repeated head knocks, which seems like this might one if the first arsebandits to sue the league, for the lack of concussion protocols, when he started...
But yeah lets praise him for being articulate

Good post. Good realistic metric of whether the game is growing too

Look all things considered theres plenty of good signs.

- TV Ratings and streaming are going gangbusters
- Crowds have improved
- Memberships are ok
- Revenue is up as a whole
- Clubs are profitable
- The league has actually done an expansion team. Actually done it.
- the game appears to be growing stronger in the pacific region, particularly Tonga, and almost certainly in Samoa.
- wouldnt be surprised to see some growth in Wheelchair rugby after this World Cup either, it was really well received
- more exposure in NZ than ever.
- the Storm are growing every year in Melbourne, and they are doing some nifty things in Victorian schools and with the VRL
- NRLW is flying
- new stadiums in Townsville, Parramatta and Moore Park in the last 4 years, one to come in Penrith.
- COE facilities being built or already built for almost every club in the league.

Really, at the moment, whatever you believe about the rights deal, if you get development right, the sky is the limit.

I dont think Vlandys and Abdo are the men to take the league forward in the mid to long term, but they have been the men to get it where it is now. Vlandys, for all his faults, is not afraid to make demands and put himself front and centre. After Gallop and Greenburg, Smith and Grant the league needed some grunt. that might have been a necessary intermediate step to make.

NRLW, like AFLW, isnt designed to be a profit centre for the league - and it doesnt need it to be, it has the revenue to operate this. Its basically a promotional tool to grow the next generation of female players, and the generation after that, and so on.

If we got actual development data from the league, I bet it shows neutral or negative growth in the mens/boys numbers and a massive lift in female figures. Thats the whole point of NRLW at this time. Everything else is a bonus.

Not to be a debbie downer but....... :)

FTA is down, streaming is up. Is there any net gain?
- Crowds have improved
not really, take out the magic weekend fudge and we havent reached our purple patch of 2010-2014 since.
- Memberships are ok
Were going great until the NRL handed the responsibility back to the clubs. Now its showing the real haves and have nots in terms of active fanbases and slowed to a trickle for most clubs
- Revenue is up as a whole
yep, as it should be. Shame the revenue gap with our main competitor is widening massively though in next few years
- Clubs are profitable
Largely due to NRL handouts, at the potential cost of grassroots funding
- The league has actually done an expansion team. Actually done it.
Yeh we got one at long last! Shame it didn't bring in any money but hey ho
- the game appears to be growing stronger in the pacific region, particularly Tonga, and almost certainly in Samoa.
Is it? Not seen any participation rate numbers to suggest it is or isnt. Western Sydney isnt a PI :)
- wouldnt be surprised to see some growth in Wheelchair rugby after this World Cup either, it was really well received
you'd hope so, it was brilliant and I really hope the ARLC look to support it better here
- more exposure in NZ than ever.
yep, only good part of the new tv deal
- the Storm are growing every year in Melbourne, and they are doing some nifty things in Victorian schools and with the VRL
yep, crowds are down a bit but participation is improving, Storm are working much closer with NRLVic now and their memberships are going gangbusters
- NRLW is flying
yep, the growth in the womens game from grassroots to NRLW is the big shining success story fo the last 5 years for RL
- new stadiums in Townsville, Parramatta and Moore Park in the last 4 years, one to come in Penrith.
we are slowly getting there. Shame the wheels fell off in Sydney ,again, but hopefully they'll figure it out one day. Now maybe Vlandys could do something to advocate for Canberra?
- COE facilities being built or already built for almost every club in the league.
yep always good to see nice gyms.

The games spent nearly $4BILLION since becoming independent. Has the ROI been that good? Can you honestly say the game is so much better than in 2013?

It is a long way from even being a breakeven competition, It seems to be the main hold up for the CBA. Not sure how you get it resolved quickly when you can't lock in the schedule in for 5 years.

I get Christan Welsch and others frustrations but not sure of the answer

So what is Welsch's solution? In theory it should be done but it isn't as easy to do.

Are they happy to be curtain raisers? What about midweek?

I think like wookie said the ROI isnt in $ revenue back to the NRL. Once thats accpeted it is just a case of how much are you willing to spend to reap the benefits in other ways.

So make up some hypothetical situation, include some homophobic slurs, then get enraged by said hypothetical.

Like I've I always said, I don't understand why people are loyal to administrators and corporate boardrooms.
