There lies the problem.

RL is in a great spot now, It may not be as strong in 5 years time.

The Wallabies are only going to be shit for so long, How out from 2032 does state and Feds up funding to ensure we go well in those olympics?

RL in the past wouldn't take the jump of teams so soon... but we have forever being chasing our tail as a sport

Very good post. It can be done but we are going to raid RU in the short term.

He could realistically go the three at once. We've done it before with multiple new teams in 82, 88 and 95. He's ballsy enough to do it.

That’s true. At least 88 worked somewhat.

I still think giving each team a two year period to set up would be beneficial. We also need something beyond the cap to manage it all.

5 years would be way too early. I’d very disappointed if he did that. 10 years perhaps.
We have a 27 round comp and two rep byes

Easy to play two pools of 10 home away 18 rounds and 10 cross pool games 28 rounds

Thats the gist of the conference setup, but pools is the correct term.. should be a north pool vs south pool, borderline it on Parramatta rd hombush stadium home of the NRL GF

Going conference system and not making it Sydney and non Sydney is just Sydney haters acting out of spite. There is zero benefit to dividing Sydney clubs into both conferences. Fewer rivalry games for Sydney clubs but with zero upside for the rest.

The obvious common sense strategy with 20 team is go Sydney conference and non Sydney conference. And to balance out the travel costs I would be all for the non Sydney clubs getting an extra payment from the NRL to compensate for the travel. Case closed. This maximises rivalry games without giving anyone a financial handicap. Win win.

Clubs dont pay travel costs so that isnt an issue.

the two big down sides of that model is inequitable travel requirements for the two conferences and inequitable fta covg.

reality most syd ey ga,es are not really rivallaries and don’t necessarily draw any significantly bigger crowds. You’d be better seeing what the genuine Sydney match ups are and keeping them together in the conferences

ie
Conf1
Dragons
Roosters
Souths
sharks

Conf2
Eels
Panthers
Doggies
Wests
Manly

Youre completely right travel costs are not an issue, its the fairness of the draw plus hours travelling
So for instance in an all Sydney pool, those clubs would gain massive advantages for players not having to travel via airport every fortnight at all, thus keeping the best players from around the game, the interstate teams suffer from having to travel regardless, but will be up against teams who are not travelling as much when the pools cross over... its basically about fairness of the draw.
Not about Sydney being sydney only.
A straight line dividing Sydney into north/south will solve those issues as every team will still be travelling to the interstate teams regardless of which pool you're in

North pool
Pasifika (Cairns)/SEQ4
Cowboys
Dolphins
Broncos
Titans
Knights

Manly
Penrith
Parramatta
Wests

South pool
South Sydney
Easts Sydney
Cronulla
Canterbury

Dragons (WIN)
Raiders
Storm
Perth
Warriors
New Zealand 2/Adelaide

Out of those 9 teams added:

- 4 no longer exist (Steelers, Reds, Giants and Crushers)

- And at least 3 went broke (Cowboys, Newcastle and the Warriors)

And several have the worst winning % of all time.

A lot of those things you mentioned occurred before the game started getting decent TV deals. We’ll never know if that would’ve changed anything of course

Two ten team conferences

home and away in your conference

top five finals in each

Brisbane gets a final Sydney gets a final

them a Super Bowl up for bidders

onconference being the Sydney teams plus one

the other a qld conference with the rest

the extra derbies would see crowds through the roof

The proposal was howled down by the non Sydney clubs as expected

let’s see what the future holds
That was over 2 years ago, and yes it ended being howled down due to the unfairness of travel, nothing to do with the conference idea.... just the way it would be split... ive said before a split right thru sydney defining a border would be the best reasonable outcome, it would create a north/south rivalry that we already have regarding state of origin...
The fairness of travel has a bigger impact on clubs than you can imagine, and the lack of that same travel is a huge advantage, especially for clubs in Sydney

Someone showed the travel would hardly be different for non Sydney clubs

if they want a 26 round season it would also allow for a decent amount of cross pool games

top five is the best finals system

team that comes first should get the most benefits

Agreed it is no different, but a massive leg up for the Sydney sides who will never have to travel.... this is the point..
Take off the bias cap off and think about which clubs will prosper from this refarding recruitment and retention of certain marquees, we already see how hard it is for the knights, titans and canberra to draw and keep players
