I'll be convinced when he is given just one series as opener. If he averages below 40 for that series I will never want him selected ever again.

WilliamGilbertGrace averages 34.58 as an opener...

Take out his first two matches which was the time it took for South Africa to figure out how to get him out easily and he averages 26.74 as an opener from 13 matches

WilliamGilbertGrace averages 34.58 as an opener...

That's from 2+ years ago before his technique changes.

He is now much more solid against quicks than he was. I'm currently watching him play against NSW. Copeland, Abbott and Sandhu are bowling extremely well and he is handling it.

I think if he opens and is allowed to get his eye in against quicks he will be able to face spinners much more easily. That is why I overlook his up and down time in the middle order. Openers are openers for a reason. They are best suited to that position for a reason and they usually don't go down the order for a reason.

That's why I say if he does average less than 40 after one series in his best position I'll drop the matter forever.

Two or three shield years in this form and he can have another test shot

Compared to the 0 shield years of form Bailey put in?

This "two or three years of form" rubbish people come up with was relevant 10 years ago when there was some actual talent in the incumbents.

Who is worth feeding from the current top 6? Clarke and Warner at best. NOONE else is being made to perform for 2 or 3 years. Bailey had one good series in pyjama cricket and got a gig. Watson has been failing for years. Rogers can barely average his age at the crease.

If we had 6 batsmen who deserved to be there I wouldn't be talking about Gilbert or anyone else. The majority of them do not deserve their spots.

Who changed the title of the thread? Can we change the title back?
Its an insult to use WGs name like this

Incidently....

Played 870 first class games in 43 years (kept playing till 60yo)

so what, he's had his chances and whilst he can make runs at first class level, he clearly is not up to international level so shield cricket is where he belongs for now
