so what, he's had his chances and whilst he can make runs at first class level, he clearly is not up to international level so shield cricket is where he belongs for now

People that know anything about cricket understand batting at opener and batting at 6 is not the same thing. Some players are great at one and not great at the other. He hasn't had an opportunity as opener in over 2 years.

lol, Blewitt batted at 6 and also opened for Australia
I didn't say it's physically impossible. I said it's very unlikely to succeed at both. And Blewett didn't have anywhere near the career he should have.

Clarke, arguably the greatest player in the world right now, has serious issues moving up just one spot in the order. And we expect a kid with a fraction of the experience who has played opener his entire life to adapt and not even have one bad test at 6?

Seriously, why would anyone make that argument... he averages 42 outside of Australia - that's enough...

In Australia, yes wonderful... but batting wise, at the least Amla, de Villiers, Sangakarra, Kallis are without doubt better... and then the likes of Steyn, Philander are handy bowlers...

Clarke is a fine player, but hugely overrated IMO

But then, you think WilliamGilbertGrace is a test batsman, so any argument is likely to be short

WilliamGilbertGrace will be back. As will Khawaja. It's a matter of when, not if. Perhaps there's some kind of deliberate plan to get these two making runs at first class level ala Mark Waugh, Justin Langer, Damien Martyn, Michael Hussey, and in the meantime we're using older stop-gaps. Such a plan might even work. Perhaps it's thought two young blokes in Warner and Smith developing while playing Test cricket is enough.

Your insistence on Clarke being inferior is just as stupid as BM's insistence that WilliamGilbertGrace will be our saviour. Clarke is the equal of any of those batsmen.

FFS, completely missed the point. There's a reason I added the word "arguably". It is an argument many people have but one way or another he is the best or one of the best and he is our only world class star. And as good as he is he seemingly has issues with just the smallest move in his place in the order.

Nobody talks about there being no difference to where you bat when it comes to our best and most experienced player. And yet a kid with a fraction of Clarkes experience who has batted opener all his life is expected to not have a single bad test at 6.

Then only two more for the next 44!

Poor old Blewy, his last few tests were just horrible to watch, was it NZ/India summer? He got a few 80-90s, all off about 4000 balls. When he first came in against the pissweak poms of 94-95 he just carved up.

Who changed the title of the thread? Can we change the title back?
Its an insult to use WGs name like this

Incidently....
WG played 22 tests over 19 years
Played 870 first class games in 43 years (kept playing till 60yo)

Tufnell would be a good choice.

Blewett and Elliott were the two big coulda/woulda/shoulda players of the 90s. Mark Waugh recked his knee in his 2nd test (my earliest test memory). Was never the same after that. Seemed mentally shot other than a brief patch smashing the Poms around in 97. Was it Bangladesh or Sri Lanka he was brought back for after years in the wilderness in about 2004, he couldn't even score against them.

In 4 1/2 shield games WilliamGilbertGrace has 3 centuries 547 runs at 68.37

Next Shield game will be Feb 12, same day as the 1st test between Australia and South Africa commences. So only Big Bash games to impress

You wouldn't think WilliamGilbertGrace will play any ashes tests, but may be a smokey for the South African tour?

Depends how many players they take.

Lets assume the 12 that are in the Perth test are.

Plus: Pattinson, Doolan, Coulter-Nile, Cummins, Wade or Paine. Possibly one more batsman.
