Brilliant 69 from Hughes amid a collapsing SA team. Nobody else in the top order got above 30. 3 ducks. Hughes has found form for this summer. Watch the runs pile on this month and he gets selected for the 1st test.

Larkin and Henry both got tons and half tons in the game batting in the top 3

Edward Cowan with 2 tons in the first 2 first class matches for the summer, Silk with a 97*. Bancroft for WA with 99 and 129 in 4 innings this summer. Larkin and Henry also with tons. With all these youngsters stepping up. The question must be asked...has Philly J's time come and gone?? :-k:-k

I meant in this innings. It's usually easier to bat earlier in a 1st class match. It's usually easier to bat when they're not collapsing at the other end.

20 and 69 is a solid start to the summer. An average of 44.5 so far, you'd take that long term.

FFS you're counting someone who has made their FIRST ton to be ahead of Hughes?

Yet Hughes still looked all at sea, if you actually watched some of it instead of whacking yourself off you would realise he was edgy, dropped THREE times, and finally dismissed. If anything he should have made about 10.

We don't need an opener for this summer, we need a number three and maybe a number six. Hughes is not either and he is not in form, Tom Cooper would be the SA bat I'd be looking at with Watson the obvious number 3.

Cowan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hughes

To be honest, I am astounded Hughes is still discussed as an international bat, how much evidence is needed. Chris Martin is still looking lean, although long retired, if more is needed

In his defence he is better than when Martin was terrorising him....but mentally he's completely lost it IMO.

He's looking better against pace. But I believe that a top drawer quick like Steyn would destroy him and even a quality bowler like Southee or Sami would cause him trouble.

As for spin, f**k me, I reckon John Howard would get him out first ball.

The fruit should be canned.

We need an opener. Rogers is cooked. And Hughes is in form. Scoring 89 runs in a 1st class match is not a loss of form! And he scored runs in the UAE tour match. And he scored heaps of runs over the winter. He hasn't failed in a 1st class match all year!

SO you acknowledge he has improved at pace. And yet Steyn will destroy him? Even though he has got runs in both series he has played in South Africa. So he has improved since then but he'll get less runs?

Rogers is the leading FC run scorer in the world for 2014. If he's cooked Hughes isn't even in the same galaxy as a test spot.

What has he done recently ?

No 4 day form, or even ODI form and hasn't played much at all in the last 8 months.

He needs to earn his spot, not have it given to him.

Steyn has improved since then as well. Last time Seth Efrika toured Fruity was hidden from them because the selectors were afraid he'd embarrass them. The same still applies.

He went OK against Steyne in his debut test series. Came out of it with a pretty high average and in Seth Efrica.

It took a nuffie like Martyn to expose his weakness to right arm away swingers.

Hughes may have gotten better since but his weaknesses are so well publicised most teams know how to bowl to him.

Watson may not have much cricket, but that doesn't mean he's not the best option at 3. Exhibit A; Alex Doolan. Exhibit B; Phil Hughes.

I believe Doolan deserves a chance to play a home test or two to show what he's got. If he's got nothing than into the fruit bowl with Phil.

Rogers struggled on a tour where all of our batsmen struggled, and was in dominant form for the 8 prior tests.

What you know about cricket could be written on the back of a stamp.

Doolan was in good form against Pakistan in the lead up, he was the only Aussie batsman to score a ton. Then he got run out in the first test and dropped for a T/20 slogger in the second test in the most mind boggling selection I have ever witnessed.

He has form Watson doesn't.

If he fails drop him but he has earned to right to start the series imo. Watson needs first class runs and his form in the recent Matador cup was very average and that was ODI, he is a long way from a test recall imo and at the wrong end of his career.

There is no rational reason for Finch to be ahead of Hughes in the ODI team. Hughes has a higher ODI average.
