Don’t cry for Paul Gallen: most people think he got what he deserved

MOST people think Paul Gallen got what he deserved — or should have been whacked a little harder.

They’re sick of NRL stars damaging the greatest game of all.

Gallen may be shocked to learn today that 54 per cent of more than 15,000 people polled at dailytelegraph.com.au believe his punishment was either “too lenient” or “just right”.

He needs to realise that if he wants mums and dads to encourage their kids to play rugby league, he needs to behave like the role model he’s supposed to be.

The $50,000 fine and ban from playing for Australia shows NRL bosses, like fans, are well and truly sick of such poor behaviour.

NRL boss Dave Smith has warned for months that he’s not going to stand by and see people who love the game turned off by the stars we cheer for.

In case anyone has forgotten, this is what Smith said in an interview with this journalist after the Todd Carney “bubbler” incident in July: “We’ve seen a number of incidents over a long period of time and there’s a line being drawn here that says we’re not going to accept that going forward.’’

He said if players committed “indiscretions outside the boundaries of what the general community expects, there will be consequences”.

I know that if I take to social media and call my bosses “c@#$s”, I won’t be working here any longer. I don’t expect to be given a chance to explain such a derogatory outburst.

We can debate all we like whether the NRL should have questioned Gallen before revealing his punishment. But instead of him telling us that he’s going to “fight” and “consult lawyers”, I would rather him look in the mirror and tell us how he will do better to respect the game that has given him so much.

We want to cheer for you Gal when you lead NSW to Origin victory; we want to admire your skill and toughness; we want to celebrate your career achievements. But if you want to treat the game like trash, please go and play something else, somewhere else.

haha, all the negative comments bagging rothfield's blatant bias has made the telegraph push out some balance.

haha, forget the balance. What the NRL needs to do now is go after this old fossil as he made the statement Gallen has been suffering depression for 18 months. ??????

If so, why did he not tell anyone after all the effort the NRL put into the ads across the country stating that depression is a problem ,,,that needs to be talked about.
The beetroot old merkin needs to be hung out over the coals if he kept this a secret while the NRL asked for all players to come forward.
String him up, quarter him and let the crows eat his inners. Then and only then will i be happy.

he's a dickhead who should have his accreditation stripped

Good to see the grub get counteree in all od the replies to his tweet. What a deadset asshole and oxygen thief, the Nrl should revoke any media pass or the like he has for conferences and gamedays.

The nswrl need to get over it to and have lost my support as a result of defending gallen. Oh and conlon can get stuffed as well.

Unfortunately for rugby league there are far too many people reading his rubbish and taking it as gospel, reading the comments on articles about gallen and they are complaining about gallan's natural justice and why he doesn't get a hearing, all because rothfield mislead them. It is completely unethical behaviour for a supposed journalist.

NSWRL should have immediately condemned Gallen's behaviour. Not doing so was like endorsing it. Can only hope it leads to a further cleanout.

Along with most NSW dickhead supporters who also back Gallen, what hope did rugby league have for growth.
The game lost massive support from Gallens acts, Origin punch-up, then his remarks about players loving having the heads punched in, and then his acts when the Asada incident started, remember him going on the hunt for whoever dobbed them in,
then his comments as captain about Queenslanders having two heads. ? no wonder the game cant attract fans, he always tries to shed the blame onto everyone else bar himself, as he did by saying his dad sent the tweet.
The guys a dill, his supporters are dinosaurs living in the ice-age.

The players getting behind him just shows how quickly they are ready to jump into the fire with him.
Now it turns out the NRL paid this fools lawyers fees.
This is how he repays them.
Time for Gallen to take up boxing fulltime.
The damage he has done our code is enormous.

Take Bird and a few others with him.
The Titans need to tap into the support of the Polynesian community in their area, no wonder they cant grow with the dills they have as leaders.
