Players refusing to sing the National anthem in protest

The writer apparently was a Scottish git - to 99.99% of the population the words mean & are about something different - federation.
I think those verses change the tone and intended meaning of the song from the writers perspective and I can understand why people would not be happy to sing a song that's original intention was far from inclusive!

If they cancelled the anthem the kickoff would at least be at 10:42pm NZT.... that's something.

If thats what you think - likely a minority but we have some decent songwriters in Australia, let's organise to change that line & move on.

No, Gussy & Rabs would have more time to talk about "the voice".

After the welcome to country ceremony, the anthem, Guss's poem about origin, mate against mate; I would suggest about a 8.45pm (EST) kick off.

It lost in 1977 and with good reason.

A song about a 19th century livestock thief who commits suicide when apprehended. Very politically correct, that. Sure to hit the spot with the indigenous folk. And if people have trouble with girt, imagine jolly jumbucks, billabongs, squatters, swagmen, etc.

Good thing I Have not made a comment on the political correctness or the lyrics on this thread, but thanks for inventing a position for me.

It's a shit song. Waltzing Matilda slaps. That there are members of the indigenous indigenous community the hate the shitty song is great. They have more taste than the people content with it.

If we're being ridiculous I reckon the 'indigenous folk' would love it. It's got a dude stealing sheep from the colonists who expropriated indigenous land that no doubt resulted in the deaths of a shit ton of indigenous folk. Check. It's got a colonist, a member of the group of people responsible for so much damage to the indigenous people, killing himself. Check. It's also got the police, a wing of the white settler colonial executive responsible for so much sorrow amongst the indigenous population, being confounded. Check.

I'm only seeing win, win and win here for the 'indigenous folk.'

So you see the songs intention as being inclusive?

We should stop fiddling with a broken song and just come up with a new one! As a multicultural society, why are we singing an anthem that was written about pushing British values to the detriment of all others?

No, I take those words (and the majority of Australians do) to mean the federation of 6 separate colonies becoming an independent country on 01/01/1901.

Put forward a song that sparks like the US & NZ anthems and I would be all for it.

That may be your take on the song, but the omitted verses and changed lyrics show that that wasn't the intended meaning of the song. It was actually performed at the Federation ceremony and included all the verses including the current second verse!

But what if the bloke stealing the sheep was aboriginal - we would need to look into the undertones of this ditty. Definitely, need to consider Banjo's attitude to indigenous people.

So you so there at the ceremony - shit man, attitudes change. If there is no better alternatives & people are getting their knickers in a knot about this line - get John Williamson to change the line (so it flows to the next line).

We should just play the first verse of Waltzing Matilda.

That way it’s just a happy song about a bloke relaxing in the bush getting ready to have a cuppa.
