I'm clearly in the minority, but I find the NZ anthem a mindless overtly religious drone that appears to go on for ever.

Please don’t not take this as me defending the British - they were merkins - but I’ve never heard that aboriginal culture had a form of written language?

Once again, not defending the brits and their merkin ways, just interested to learn if there was actually a form of written aboriginal language

They didn’t because they had the most intricate form of oral historical record in history. As such, it never needed to evolve.

According to the British, history had to be written down to exist. It completely ignored the fact that indigenous Australians could give you a dozen generations of their family history via oral history.

It hasn’t even been our official anthem for long, so it’s not like it has a claim to historical significance

The only problem with changing the anthem so that it will undoubtedly be replaced with something equally shit
National anthems are never perfect in any country. French national anthem is still going on about revolution. US national anthem is hard and historic. Indian national anthem is geographic, misses half the Indian provinces but includes a Pakistani one. NZ national anthem is the same verse twice in different language. Australia has Girt.

I’ve seen written language by aborigines in Mt Borradaile
It has astonishing rock art.
It has tombs in the walls of the cave walls.
Massive rainbow serpent painting on the roof of a cave.
A bit of a mission to get there.

There is one piece of rock art that is written language.
It’s english.
They traded with the macassins for iron spear heads.
Sea slugs was what the macassan’s wanted.
They also traded with the pearl traders.

This is it.
It’s not graffiti.
They reckon it was meant to say “ Boat”.
Nobody really knows though.

A few links about the joint
Well worth the read.

When the British were colonising the world, they ranked the races they found in each place by how ‘advanced’ they were. Their measure of ‘advanced’ was based upon what they recognised as progress.

So, for example, the indigenous Australians didn’t have written language, didn’t have a hierarchical system of government, didn’t have property ownership, didn’t have agriculture, etc - except that they did have variants of all of these things, just not in any form recognisable to the British. They were also not particularly militaristic, and didn’t have strong armed resistance to British colonialism (this is again not entirely accurate, but according to the British in the 1700s it was true).

The Maori on the other hand had written language, a clear hierarchy of who was in charge, agriculture in a form that the British recognised, clear boundaries of territory and property ownership, and fought back strongly when the British used force.

As such, the Maori were viewed as more advanced and treated as being a ‘more civilised’ people. It’s all complete and utter bullshit, but that’s how the British did things in the colonial era.

Also the Maori's had a far more war like culture than many Native Australian people's did at the time.

This happened back in 17. Not a bad idea

Judith Durham's lyrics
Australians let us stand as one, upon this sacred land.
A new day dawns, we're moving on to trust and understand.
Combine our ancient history and cultures everywhere,
To bond together for all time, advance Australia fair.
With loving hearts then let us sing, advance Australia fair.

Australians let us all be one, with peace and harmony.
Our precious water, soil and sun, grant life for you and me.
Our land abounds in nature's gifts to love, respect and share,
And honouring the Dreaming, advance Australia fair.
With loving hearts then let us sing, advance Australia fair.

The place was only discovered by accident
There is another joint nearby we weren’t allowed to go.
It was like a massive ancient volcano type of formation.
It’s all over grown but on the inside it’s basically a massive grave site.
All the skeletons are in the crevices in the walls.
I saw the same near where that word was written.
They wouldn’t let us take photos.
I didn’t dare.
I’m not religious but I wasn’t pushing my luck.
