Players refusing to sing the National anthem in protest

With all due respect all of what you say here is fairly irrelevant to the topic. The status of Aboriginal Australians, whether it be good, bad or otherwise is beside the point.

Our country is a representation of our past, which is why acknowledging the past is important and we shouldn't just 'get over it'.

Most people in these roles are also male, does this make this a "mans" country?
You've made me look at this issue from a different perspective, so for that, thank you.

I still believe the Indigenous community will never have any real power (they way I define/measure power) in this country, but if changing the national anthem to include them makes them feel better I'm happy for them/you.

How do you define power in this country?

His post about alcohol which doesn't once refer to Briggs, his video or anything I said?

Shit referral, mate.
His post clearly outlined the prejudice and intergenerational issues still faced by indigenous people, of which you were dismissive in your post because of how Briggs characterises them.

You can debate how much you don't like the video's presentation but the facts behind it are real and need to be properly addressed.

Naive white hetero male here. Pardon my ignorance but would like to know...

Is it just the words of AAF that offend indigenous people?

Is there any reason why we can't ditch the first verse and sing the second verse instead? (Which I prefer over the first verse anyway)

At least then the tune and anthem title stays the same, but without the divisive language.

Changing the lyrics would probably be fine.
The actual tune isn’t the issue.

Personally, I’d like to see a new one all together.

Won’t happen until we become a republic and shake the royal’s. Though that opens a new can of worms because too many of our people are like “but the royals, how can we get rid of them”.

What if there is a sector of society offended by that?
Every country on the planet has their shit sorted (ones colonize by the dirty Poms) except us mate...
A change/conversation is better then nothing.

I did love the irony of Widders' Welcome to Country being immediately curtailed by the National Anthem on Sunday.

It seems to be that the main objection to the anthem seems to be Australia's perceived failure to live up to the lofty ideals that they sing about.

I'm having a conversation.

It is a genuine question. The whole premise for change is that a sector of society is offended and or feel excluded by the anthem.

What happens if the proposed solutions just changes the sector of society thay feels that way? Do we agree to an acceptable minority of offended people? Perhaps certain demographics are more important than others?

If you believed I was dismissive towards the points that Briggs made then I believe I have properly addressed it and got my position across clearly.

Watched a replay of the 1991 Origin decider last night on NRLTV. The anthem before the game was just the tune, with people in the crowd lending their voices while both teams on the field stood around in two circles going through last minute game tactics.

When did both teams lining up for the anthem and the expectation to pay it full attention and sing it become a thing?
