Players refusing to sing the National anthem in protest

I'm having a conversation.

It is a genuine question. The whole premise for change is that a sector of society is offended and or feel excluded by the anthem.

What happens if the proposed solutions just changes the sector of society thay feels that way? Do we agree to an acceptable minority of offended people? Perhaps certain demographics are more important than others?

Why would you be offended if it was changed to recognise the countries first people? Sure if it was changed to include white people are c***s for invading us I could see some angst, but that isnt going to happen is it? Some subtle word changing to show greater respect of the indigenous community isnt really going to offend anyone other than those who dont think they should be recognised or reespected, but there's always one nation to represent them.

Watched a replay of the 1991 Origin decider last night on NRLTV. The anthem before the game was just the tune, with people in the crowd lending their voices while both teams on the field stood around in two circles going through last minute game tactics.

When did both teams lining up for the anthem and the expectation to pay it full attention and sing it become a thing?

Nationalsim is slowly creeping up on us. Next we will be pledging allegiances to the flag every morning and clutching at our hearts whenever our president tells us how proud we should all be.

Seeing the bit on the Fan with Ado Carr on the 2017 GF amused me. Belting out the anthem with tears streaming down his cheeks. Whats changed?

So now you are dictating when people can and can't be offended?

The NSW performance from Game 1 to Game 2 certainly changed this year. I may have missed it, but there wasn't a lot of focus on the words in the national anthem and a lot of focus on footy before game 2, unlike the Game 1 prep.

Hopefully a few of them learnt a lesson from that.

Does it matter?

We either make decisions based on people being offended or we don't.

Say we do take the reason in to account. Who determines validity?

the fact that the current song doesn’t even acknowledge the traditional owners of this country is a pretty good reason for people to be offended don’t you think?

I'm not sure but it obviously didn't mean shit either way. 3 weeks ago everyone gave a shit about who did and didn't sing. No one cares or notices now and I find it hard to believe anyone will care again till about Jan 20th. Australia, for the most part, doesn't give a toss.

Who determines anything?

Who forms government and how?

How did our society evolve?

Why is the sky blue?

Why did I wake up in the morning?

Why is that vase laying on its side?

Does any country have a national anthem that makes mention of its native history?

Interestingly, from what i can see, no.

A lot of them are archaic violent battle anthems about how their country was founded.

Nz probably comes the closest in recognising indigenous through language but the words arent inclusive.

Still, doesnt mean we shouldnt change it. It is symbolic of the shit efforts we've put in to recognise and locals

Depends if that offence is legit by societies standards of the day or not. Some rednecks offended because the national anthem is respectful to the countries first people isn’t going to carry much weight in argument to change the anthem I’d suggest. Society, and the countries decision makers elected by society, will determine the validity as has always been the case.

Is it that hard to understand how it offends the indigenous first Australians?

Seriously?

Give me one good reason why the song should not mention the indigenous people.
There should be a new anthem written that mentions our aboriginal past.
It also should make mention of the Italians, Greeks, Chinese and Vietnamese who have helped shape our country and culture. Also Serbs. Germans too. And the Lebanese. Who hasn’t had a kebab at 3am?
Going to be about twenty verses in there. The chorus should be uplifting. A key change would be pretty awesome too.
