Negotiations for stadiums land in progress
By ALFRED KANINIBA
NEGOTIATIONS are still in process for two prime sites which will see a state-of-the-art stadium built as part of the PNG NRL Bid’s criteria to field a team in the NRL.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by Sports Minister and PNG NRL Bid chairman Philemon Embel during the announcement of the new CEO Brad Tassel and development manager Shane Morris, for the Bid. Both appointments will be for a year.
Minister Embel said negotiations were still proceeding with Steamships for an area behind Country Club, while the other prime site was behind the UPNG Campus at Waigani. “The UPNG have indicated land to build a stadium but it is with the 2015 Games Venues Committee and negotiations are continuing with the University Council,” Minister Embel said.
The Minister added that K300 million had been earmarked by the National Government to carry out this project and others in line with the hosting of the 2015 Pacific Games.
He said the major problems was the traffic management in both these sites.
“One major problem is the management of traffic on game day and we have therefore asked engineers from the NCD to help us our and advise is in this area.
“ So far, we have not received any confirmation from Steamships and I hope that they can give that confirmation soon,” Minister Embel said. Meanwhile, it is confirmed that Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd will be visiting here and will be having a session with the PNGNRL Bid board.
Minister Embel said Rudd had a passion for rugby league and in his term as prime minister had assisted PNG by making K4 million available to the league.
“We are looking forward to meeting with him and will seek his support for our Bid,” Minister Embel said.
Bid CEO Brad Tassel, said he had been meeting with PNG Foreign Affairs officials for Rudd’s visit this weekend.
Meanwhile, it is understood that Motu Koita Assembly has held talks with the Carrington Group of companies for the redevelopment of the Sir Hubert Murray stadium at Konedobu.
The Carrington Group are an Australasian property experts located in Sydney with strategic joint ventures in Asia and the Pacific.
A master plan for the “Hubert Murray Park” has already been delivered to the Motu Koita Assembly for their perusal and further deliberation.
It is believed a cost estimate of K250 million has been put forward for the redevelopment of the historical site.

Tassell briefs Gallop on Bid

By ALFRED KANINIBA

A RECENT meeting of new PNG NRL Bid CEO Brad Tassell and NRL boss David Gallop has culminated with positive feedback.
Tassell, appointed early this month, met with Gallop recently to outline the Bids new direction.
Tassell cleared the air on a number of issues that have affected the Bid and rugby league in PNG over the past 12 months, particularly with the PNGRFL.
Gallop was pleased to hear that the Bid and the PNGRFL have agreed to work together with other key stakeholders to ensure rugby league maintains its position as the national sport of PNG.
He outlined the bid was working closely with the PNGRFL to develop a national junior development program to ensure young Papua New Guineans have a clear pathway for a future in rugby league.
During the meeting, theBid CEO informed Gallop that he would be visiting various regions in PNG over the coming weeks to outline plans and consult with representatives to ensure a strong and successful junior program is implemented. "It’s a key part of our criteria to have a strong junior development structure and David was in agreeance with the Bid and PNGRFL working together to deliver this program. I am determined through consultation with the grass roots administrators of Rugby League and working with the PNGRFL that we can formulate and deliver a very successful junior development program,” he said.
Tassell informed Gallop that PNG is working hard to place itself at the top of the ladder to be considered for a licence in the coming years.
Gallop was also impressed that the Bid and PNGRFL will work together to prepare for inclusion in international competitions in the near future saying, “if work can be done to prepare for inclusion in a competition like the Queensland Cup in the years ahead that will be a stepping stone on the way”.
The Bid CEO is assured that there are a number of corporate sponsors who are ready and willing to support PNG competing more at an international level and that the nation can demonstrate to the NRL that we have a strong administrative and financial structure in place.

Gallop agrees with PNG NRL Bid’s new approach

Source:
The National , Tuesday, May 31, 2011

NATIONAL Rugby League (NRL) boss David Gallop has agreed with the PNG NRL Bid’s new direction and future plans under the leadership of Brad Tassell, the Bid’s new chief executive officer.
Tassell cleared the air on a number of issues that have affected the Bid and rugby league in PNG over the past 12 months, particularly with the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL).
Gallop was pleased to hear that the Bid and the PNGRFL had agreed to work hand in hand with other key stakeholders to ensure rugby league maintained its position as the national sport in PNG.
Tassell explained that the Bid was working closely with the PNGRFL to develop a national junior development programme to ensure young Papua New Guineans had a clear pathway for a future in rugby league.
He advised Gallop that he was visiting various regions in the coming weeks to outline plans and consult with regional representatives to ensure a strong and successful junior programme was implemented.
“It is a key part of our criteria to have a strong junior development structure and David (Gallop) has agreed with the Bid and PNGRFL working together to deliver this programme.
“I am determined through consultation with the grass roots administrators of rugby league and working with the PNGRFL that we can formulate and deliver a very successful junior development programme.”
While the NRL have not formally announced a decision to expand the competition at this stage, Tassell informed Gallop that PNG was working extremely hard to place itself at the top of the ladder to be considered for a licence in the coming years.
Gallop was also impressed that the Bid and PNGRFL were working together to ensure PNG participated in international competitions in the near future saying, “if work can be done to prepare for inclusion in a competition like the Queensland Cup that will be a stepping stone on the way”.
Tassell was assured that there are a number of corporate sponsors who are ready and willing to support PNG competing at the international level and that the nation can demonstrate to the NRL that we have a strong administrative and financial structure in place.
“This will be a huge announcement for us but we also recognise that a due diligence process has to occur to ensure the site, planning, building and construction of the stadium is in the right location and of world standard.”

I think there was an article on here somewhere saying that the PNG boys have problems with visas more so than other Pacific Islanders...

Also something about the fact that you can't get a working visa in Aus if you don't have a job paying more than 50k a year, which is the reason why they can't go to Qld Cup that much to develop.

There must be something, the NRL clubs are definitely not being racist considering all the Fijians running around...

This is the number one issue stopping the PNG national team from really improving. Need some way to get around it.

Legends back Bid

By LESLIE OMARO

STATE of Origin legends Tommy Raudonikis and Arthur Beetson have given their full support to the PNG NRL Bid during a luncheon in Port Moresby yesterday.
The “Birth of Origin” luncheon, supported by the PNG NRL Bid and held at the Gateway Hotel, witnessed some corporate companies and invited VIPS rubbing shoulders with State of Origin inaugural captains Beetson (Queensland Maroons) and Rundonikis (New South Wales Blues). Australian High Commissioner to PNG Ian Kemish was the a noticeable VIP guest at the luncheon.

The popular duo and born entertainers gave the guests a true value for their money, revealing some of their very funny stories while on tour with the Australian Kangaroos and playing Origin as well as playing for their local clubs.
Rudonikis, who played for Western Surburbs and Newtown Jets, encouraged the Bid team to work hard to achieve their goals.
The former Australian Kangaroos captain also said in order for the bid to be successful, it must have a very successful administration. Beetson, who was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame, added that it was good to learn that the PNGRFL and the PNG NRL Bid have come to an agreement and are work together, which he said was a positive sign for the bid to be successfully. An auction was held towards the end of the luncheon with a framed Queensland Origin Captains rare print signed by all Queensland captains in the 31 year history of Origin, fetching the highest price of K15,000.
The other items which were auctioned off by the two origin greats were; framed Birth of Origin 30th Anniversary signed by Raudonikis and Beetson (K6500), framed Queensland 2010 Five Years in a Row (K5500), framed Brisbane Broncos Jersey (K5500), framed Queensland Origin Jersey (K5000), framed NSW Origin Jersey (K4500), framed Australian Test Jersey (K4000), framed Immortal picture of Beetson in action for Eastern Suburbs Roosters (K3500), framed 1974 Lang Park, Kangaroos vs Great Britain (K2000) and framed Cattledog-Tom Raudonikis (K2000).

It's a better bid than CQ and a better idea than Sunshine Coast or Adelaide that some people like to advocate. If people knew the facts about this bid they might realise how viable and beneficial it would be. But people prefer to just dismiss it without knowing anything about it.
