NEGOTIATIONS are still in process for two prime sites which will see a state-of-the-art stadium built as part of the PNG NRL Bids criteria to field a team in the NRL.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by Sports Minister and PNG NRL Bid chairman Philemon Embel during the announcement of the new CEO Brad Tassel and development manager Shane Morris, for the Bid. Both appointments will be for a year.
Minister Embel said negotiations were still proceeding with Steamships for an area behind Country Club, while the other prime site was behind the UPNG Campus at Waigani. The UPNG have indicated land to build a stadium but it is with the 2015 Games Venues Committee and negotiations are continuing with the University Council, Minister Embel said.
The Minister added that K300 million had been earmarked by the National Government to carry out this project and others in line with the hosting of the 2015 Pacific Games.
He said the major problems was the traffic management in both these sites.
One major problem is the management of traffic on game day and we have therefore asked engineers from the NCD to help us our and advise is in this area.
So far, we have not received any confirmation from Steamships and I hope that they can give that confirmation soon, Minister Embel said. Meanwhile, it is confirmed that Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd will be visiting here and will be having a session with the PNGNRL Bid board.
Minister Embel said Rudd had a passion for rugby league and in his term as prime minister had assisted PNG by making K4 million available to the league.
We are looking forward to meeting with him and will seek his support for our Bid, Minister Embel said.
Bid CEO Brad Tassel, said he had been meeting with PNG Foreign Affairs officials for Rudds visit this weekend.
Meanwhile, it is understood that Motu Koita Assembly has held talks with the Carrington Group of companies for the redevelopment of the Sir Hubert Murray stadium at Konedobu.
The Carrington Group are an Australasian property experts located in Sydney with strategic joint ventures in Asia and the Pacific.
A master plan for the Hubert Murray Park has already been delivered to the Motu Koita Assembly for their perusal and further deliberation.
