The head of Australia's National Rugby League will visit Papua New Guinea to examine the country's bid to have a team in the competition.

The NRL is followed fanatically in PNG and the national government is supporting a bid to have a local team in the competition by 2015.

The league's CEO David Gallop has accepted an invitation to visit Port Moresby early next year to appraise the bid firsthand. Mr Gallop says there are significant hurdles to clear before a team can enter the NRL.

Presenter: Liam Fox, PNG correspondent
Speaker: David Gallop, CEO of the NRL

GALLOP: Obviously they are very enthusiastic about the game in PNG and indeed their ultimate goal of having a team in the NRL. They are doing a lot of work in schools and around the development of junior rugby league. No-one could ever knock their enthusiasm and we want to keep monitoring the progress that they are making up there for something that is so important to the people in PNG.

FOX: And before I go into questions about what you think about the actual bid can I get you to outline for our audience what the NRL's expansion plans are in the next few years?

GALLOP: We don't have a set agenda, what we said is that in about 12 months time we will have another serious look at the question of expansion for our competition which is currently 16 teams. We've got opportunity to do new media rights deals in the next year or so and that will give us a clearer picture of the game's revenue and whether we should be looking at expansion.

FOX: Have you outlined any particular areas where possible expansion could take place, future teams?

GALLOP: Oh, there are a number of areas that have got their hand up and are working away at it and obviously PNG is one of them.

FOX: What does a potentially successful bid for a spot in the NRL need, what are you looking for?

GALLOP: Well, I guess it comes down to two things. You want a sustainable business model, a club that can keep its head above water and indeed be a profitable exercise and then you want to add something to the rest of the competition and enhance the competition, so that means that having the ability to play out of a good stadium which we know Moresby is going to have over the next few years and that will be part of what we will look at.

FOX: Overall, do you think from what you've seen so far, is a PNG-NRL bid realistic?

GALLOP: Oh, look I think it is not around the corner. It's probably still a few years off, but it's something that needs to be looked at seriously and you would never say never, because we know that the game is so popular up there.

FOX: But does it come back to what you said before one of the two criterias - a sustainable business model. Is that an area where you might have concerns?

GALLOP: Oh well, obviously the government has indicated a lot of support and we know that there's a lot of big companies up there that would also support the game. It's a matter of them continuing to work on that business model and also what work they can do to show that they would enhance the whole competition.

FOX: Do you think a PNG team would enhance the competition as far as that second criteria you mentioned, adding something to the game?

GALLOP: Yeah, it's a bit early to say at this stage, but obviously we look at things like the extent they can improve our media rights position and our areas where club sharing in revenue across the game.

FOX: So that wouldn't be particularly high then in PNG, would it?

GALLOP: No, but I think their conscience is out and they are considering how they could address that issue.

FOX: The PNG bid team here is attached to the time frame of 2015. Is that you've said it definitely is not a few years away. Is 2015 completely unrealistic?

GALLOP: Oh, I would not want to put a time frame on it. As I say, I think it's a few years off. Let's see how things progress over the next couple of years and we may be in a better position to form judgement then.

FOX: Given that, what's the purpose of them coming to PNG next year then, if it's a few years off?

GALLOP: Oh, because it is not only about whether they are ready to be admitted to the NRL. It is just to get a view of their development program. Obviously you've got the Kumuls playing in the Four Nations at the end of this year and we're interested in the game's development in PNG generally as well as their ultimate goal of having a team.

That's what needs to happen, getting the best juniors into the NRL in coming years. The NRL can give the bid team a set list of goals to achieve to get a license but in the meantime work hard on getting alot more juniors into the NRL system, the fact that there are only a handful from a country of 6 million RL nuts smacks of laziness.

Priority one should be getting their National team competitive and giving them regular, high profile games, the NRL teams is 10 years off atleast.

AMEN!!! Could not have said it better! There should be atleast 30 PNG NRL players. Totally smacks of laziness. We need to do something about this.

Would you have preferred I typed it in pidgin or something? I can confirm 100%, just for you that no Kangaroos' players were killed or injured by the 'affectionate' mob.

Canard has a legitimate point as the affectionate mob can easily turn in to a stampede and people can get hurt just look at what happened with thousands of over zealous young teeny boppers trying to get a look at Justin Bieber.

To also second guess people and say that just because they love RL means they automaticaly wouldn't try anything is as silly as it can get the people of South America love football but that doesn't stop some of them killing and kidnapping players.

Aussie duo takes up Bid positions

Source:
The National, Wednesday, May 11, 2011

By HENRY MORABANG
THE PNG National Rugby League Bid yesterday announced the appointments of two key positions with the Bid.
Sports Minister Philemon Embel, who is also the PNG NRL Bid chairman, announced the appointments of Brad Tassell as the new chief executive officer and Shane Morris as development officer.
Both officers are no strangers to the game having served on various positions with rugby league in Australia.
Tassell, from the North Queensland rugby league in Cairns, had a feel of NRL experience with Sydney Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys, including his brothers, Jason and Kris, who had played with Roosters, Canberra, Canterbury, Cowboys, and the English Super League.
Embel said Tassell would bring a rich knowledge of national and regional sporting organisations with more than 20 years management experience with North Queensland Cowboys, Cairns Taipans (NBL) and reigning state league premiers, the Northern Pride.
He described Tassell’s appointment as another step forward in the goal of fielding a team in the Australian National Rugby League competition.
“Brad was highly recommended to us and the board was impressed after meeting with him. He is young, confident and has real energy about him that we feel is essential in a chief executive officer. Most importantly, he wants to be in Port Moresby and his experience in particular areas will be invaluable to use as we push for including in the NRL competition in future,” Embel said.
Tassell visited PNG on a number of occasions, including the first PNG Origin game in 2007.
He said the passion of the people of PNG towards rugby league was incredible and outside of Australia, PNG was rugby league heartland.
Morris is from what is widely regarded as the best junior development programme in Australia, the Brisbane Broncos, having spent four years as the Broncos development officer and junior rugby football league manager.
Morris will be working with PNG Rugby Football League to formulate a national development strategy, including programmes to educate league officials, coaches, trainers and referees in PNG.
“Shane will be employed fulltime by the Bid and I want to stress, we will be working closely with the PNGRFL to implement a development structure across the country. We (Bid) are committed to ensuring rugby league has a strong development program from players to coaches and officials and will work with PNGRFL to assist them in implementing this programmes,” Tassell said.

Tassell is CEO for NRL Bid
The PNG NRL BID yesterday announce the appointment of Brad Tassell as its new chief executive officer.
The announcement was made at the Holiday Inn by Sports Minister and Bid chairman Philemon Embel.
Tassell hails from a well known North Queensland rugby league family, having tasted NRL experience with the Sydney Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys along with brothers Jason and Kris who have played with the Sydney Roosters, Canberra, Canterbury, Cowboys and in the English Super League.
Tassell brings to the role a rich knowledge of national and regional sporting organisations with over 20 years management experience with the North Queensland Cowboys, Cairns Taipans (National Basketball League) and reigning state league premiers, the Northern Pride.
PNG NRL BID Chairman Minister Philemon Embel said the appointment was another step forward in the goal of fielding a team in the Australian National Rugby League competition.
“Brad was highly recommended to us and the board was impressed after meeting with him. He is young, confident and has a real energy about him that we feel is essential in a CEO. Most importantly, he wants to be based in Port Moresby and his experience in particular areas will be invaluable to us as we push for inclusion into the Australian NRL competition in the future,” Philemon said. “The Bid also announce the appointment of Shane Morris as the football development manager and would look to developing a structure by which to develop the junior talents.”
He said junior development was crucial if PNG was to make inroads in international rugby league.

Interesting that he will be living there in Port Moresby for the duration of his appointment.

Shows that he is not just there for the money.

Hope he makes better decisions than paying $000's for a short sponsorship with the Broncos!

I've always wondered what they hoped to achieve with that sponsorship. The absolute best case scenario is that it would attract attention to their bid - but the thing is, the only people who have any say over their bid will know exactly who they are with or without any sponsorship.

You need to realise even the decision makers do not live in the vaccuum. Take club CEOs for example, they got a lot on their plate, PNG NRL Bid is not top of their agenda. If the issue comes up, they might think what they generally think of when they think PNG, they might even hear something from a fan.

Other idea would be it's more than just sponsorhip. Whenever they do something in regards to PNG NRL bid there always seems to be someone from the Broncos involved.. Maybe it's compensation..

With the available information, yeh it's a stupid call, but it's such a stupid call that it suggests all the information is not available...

I think Shane Morris, who has also been appinted to head the PNG Junior Development program was once employed by the Broncos.

How about each NRL club "foster" a PNG player through their NYC. Love to see PNG have a team but it is a dangerous place.

^^^ THIS ^^^

Best idea so far - but maybe make it two per team for bonding and friendship reasons but to also increase the chances of 6 or so making it into first grade.

Having about 6 players graduate to play full time in the NRL plus the NRL to fund coaches and equipment in PNG would be the go for the next five years or so. To build a solid foundation is the way forword not a house of cards that could easily be knocked down

This only looks like a good idea because people are looking at it through their PNG googles...

NRL teams' first priority is their own success. They shouldn't be forced to recruit players they don't want. If a PNG player is good enough then fantastic but he shouldn't be allowed in (with a player who is good enough to miss out) if he can't cut it.

Perhaps a temporary salary cap exemption for PNG players may be more enticing. Of course the NRL will need to get something out of it in return for making such a rule. Maybe a payout from PNG government?

Often national morale and infrastructure are both needed. The initiative is about giving PNG people something to be proud of. On such morale and esteem other national initiatives eg. Infrastructure, education, unity etc. are easier.

My family has a background in PNG (working etc) To get people to actively move towards progress in themselves they need hope. This is one possible way of creating such. (such is also seen in the indigenous communities in Australia, sport is a key factor in advancing economically, creating morale and heros that can lead a nation)

Well put

Agreed.

Id imagine head coaches would be pretty pissed off if they were forced to have a certain quota in there squad.

Fans "Oh, you lost 9 straight games, thats OK cause your doing your bit for PNG"

So to sum up, NRL clubs are selfish cuties and they don't give two phuks about rugby league outside their own club. We already knew that.

I think there was an article on here somewhere saying that the PNG boys have problems with visas more so than other Pacific Islanders...

Also something about the fact that you can't get a working visa in Aus if you don't have a job paying more than 50k a year, which is the reason why they can't go to Qld Cup that much to develop.

There must be something, the NRL clubs are definitely not being racist considering all the Fijians running around...
