PNG bid for NRL

A PNG NRL team doesn't need to happen immediately (or at all since there are alternatives) but I agree with other comments let them into QLD Cup like the WA Reds have done with NSW.

Now it has more teams in the US' South and West than in Canada. Funny how that works.

Part of a conserted push in the 1990's to increase the profile of the NHL. the smaller Canadian Cities and provinces all lost their sides, as did a few places in New England like Hartford.

the CFL tried something similar but it bombed spectacularly.

Did anyone see the daily telegraph article about this with Clive ? the owner of the new soccer team on the GC and one of the richest guys around backing it?

WA Reds haven't given up the fighting talk yet!

“2008 has been a debut season of learning for the Reds however by partnering with the higher level next season we expect to improve markedly in 2009 taking the next steps to field our own NRL team by 2012 – 2013”, Mr Baldwin said.

If they stop aiming for 2012 then they're basically saying that they won't be ready until the tv deal after that, which'd be around 2020.

RL will be dead in WA by 2020 if we don't have a team. It's hanging on by the skin of its teeth now in the face of the RU growth due to the Forces admission to S14.

Time for Gallop to decide if he realy wants the "N" in NRL!

Isn't S14 there mostly propped up by Saffer expats anyway? Do they like RL?

RL won't die if Perth doesn't get a team by 2012. Infact, if the Reds stick around in the lower grades WA will very likely have a very solid junior setup.

In saying that it'll be a massive disgrace if the Reds aren't admitted to the NRL by 2012.

If clubs like Brisbane and the Gold Coast said to the Sydney clubs: "we'll pay $x for the promotion of our away game if you take it to Perth/Adelaide/etc" do you think the Sydney clubs would take up the offer?

It'd be a good way for the Qld clubs to use their financial clout for their own benefit (seeing as they're restricted by the salary cap)

Have to sadly disagree unless the NRL/ARL/WARL have a strategic plan to grow the game. RU is already moving in our juniors and expanding into the new growth areas before RL has a chance. The game went into freefall in '98 when the Reds were culled, over the last two years we have seen some consilidation but limited growth. Reality is with no NRL team to spearhead the battle against RU I can't see the WARL being able to sustain recrutiment and without kids coming through we will be dead in the water.

If they decide against the Reds in 2012 then we need a strategic plan to continue the growth of the game which would include:

More money for development officers
Guaranteed NRL games
Guaranteed FTA TV coverage at a decent time
Funding to ensure the WA Reds can keep going in a lower league

Another urban myth. Perth has a large immigrant pop from SA, NZ and England. Many of these are RU fans or RL fans that would rather watch some form of Rugby over AFL. I know quite a few old Perth Reds members who have signed up to watch the Force and at WA Reds games there has been a fair smattering of fans in Force gear.

Like the Quins I can see a cross over fan base/partnership, especially if the S14 continue to have so few home games. Hopefully we can convert a few RU fans when they see first hand how superior RL is!

Let alone all the massive dramas with setting a team up there to make it competitive (IE lack of player attractiveness due to socioeconomic conditions, lack of economic ability to sustain a team [EG to cover the finances as we already know in the NRL ticket prices are average, at least to us, but you imagine that on a Papua New Guinea wage trying to get in, and if they don't charge those rates, how they cover their finances??]), to go from Sydney to Port Moresby, it will take you around about 6 hours, as you'd have to connect via Brisbane.

Who's going to fund these airfares? It's hardly like the Papua New Guinea economy has the sponsorship opportunities that say the New Zealand economy has. TV rights won't spike with it because advertisers won't see the PNG market as being that attractive to have their ads played in.

The furtherest they will ever get is the Queensland Cup, and I suspect any smart sports administrator involved with that competition will look for them to play as many games in Queensland as possible to overcome a lot of the flight issues.

The most recent 'large-scale' internationalised sporting operation in an Australian competition is the Singapore Slingers in the NBL. Singapore by comparison is an extremely rich and modern country (frankly, it's a beautiful place). Why didn't that work? I see far larger scale problems investing in a poor socioeconomic area where returns on investment (and ultimately thats the major thing) are going to be extremely low, and in fact represent a major net present value loss to a potential investor. Government's would be foolish to back it as government funding needs to be far better deployed into socioeconomic concerns in Papua New Guinea rather than outlaying for a rugby league team.

A much sounder strategy is to keep perservering with the Australian PM XIII matches in Port Moresby, and start to bring back the inter-Pacific-rim test matches. The problem extends beyond PNG but also is a problem for Samoa, Tonga and Fiji and neither New Zealand or Australia, or more pertently the lack of an independent international governing body, do enough to support growth opportunities there.

Given we can't even establish NRL board room support to get teams out of Sydney and into areas such as the Central Coast, Adelaide, Perth, another Queensland team and Wellington, the chances of going into a poor socioeconomic area are negligible.

Sounds great in theory, and no doubt there are some really talented players coming out of PNG, but.................

Massive issues with security and dollars.

It won't happen.

The only chance would be using PNG as a feeder for Cowboys or Brisbane.

PNG wants Rudd's support go get into the NRL

PAPUA New Guinea wants Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to support its bid for entry to the National Rugby League competition.
PNG's Prime Minister Michael Somare has thrown his support behind the country's push to enter the NRL by 2020 but he says Rudd must also get behind the effort.
PNG's Minister Assisting the PM Philemon Embel, speaking on behalf of Mr Somare, said that last week PNG had sent a letter to NRL bosses but the support of the Australian government was needed.
"We would be looking to AusAID or the (Australian) federal government to assist us,'' Embel told reporters. "At a government-to-government level we are hoping for his (Rudd's) support,'' he said.
PNG faces costly hurdles such as the building of a suitable stadium and set-up fees. And there is also the problem of reducing on-field and off-field violence that regularly mars matches in PNG rugby league.
The bid to enter the NRL would be a difficult 10-12 year journey reliqant on PNG big business, Embel said. "The (PNG) PM has decided to explore the possibility of having a PNG franchise team participate in the NRL,'' he said.
"At the moment it is just an exploratory stage.''
PNG would follow the NRL's Gold Coast Titans model to break into the comp, he said. That required building a $50 million stadium.
"It's not easy, it costs a lot of money and needs a lot of preparation,'' he said. "There are no figures as yet as there is nothing there, it's an idea being floated.''
Somare wants a PNG NRL side as part of his legacy to the nation. PNG is the only country in the world with rugby league as its national sport.

So it looks like they're aiming for 2020. This could happen.
