Hang on, didn’t Penrith recently invent junior development from their big catchment area of Juniors?

Big difference between junior and second tier pathways/links and who the locals support in those areas. Keebra Park link up means next to f**k all. Souths aren’t suddenly going to have thousands of fans in Townsville or Titans fans in Ipswich.

Tell that to Ben Ikin who waa sooking about it today

Manly use 2 Penrith clubs as the feeder teams, Roosters directly fund another club, So other teams set up base in other teams areas

PNG government is bid as well, They'd have some data to back it up.

The Easier way is to team up with Easts Tigers or the Bears.

Again though I don't see them being next up but whoever comes in next will have a solid business plan
Yes the notoriously corrupt and mismanaged PNG government are well known for there financial dealings.

Being based in cairns also kills off any chance of an afl team too
Why? Why would a PNG team playing a handful of games in Cairns mean jack shit to an AFL team being based in Cairns?

Luckily its not really an issue as the AFL would ever expand to somewhere as small as Cairns in an non-AFL state.

There would be a minimum of at least 4 cities in Australia, that would ahead of Cairns for an AFL team.

Liverpool is Canterbury area

Nrl grant 17.5 million
Federal govt grant 20 to 25 million

total fc revenue 37.5 million to 42.5 million

add corporate revenue up to 5 millon pa

this club will be a powerhouse

no man’s land

but If the dogs get their new ground built there they will push into Campbelltown
Parts of Liverpool were Bulldogs up to Holsworthy and Moorebank but I’m not sure they crossed the bridge, Parramatta reached down to the north edge, Bonnyrigg and maybe as far as Mt Pritchard.
Parts were Wests Magpies area.

When my son was playing in the Magpie jnrs he’d have games against Liverpool Catholic Club, Liverpool All Saints, Ashcroft, Hinchinbrook, Green Valley which are all “Liverpool”.

bit similar to where does parra and Penriths territories finish

like Blacktown may be Penrith buts it’s almost both

I used to be a reader of these forums for years and all I would read was we had to expand to Perth or we had no future

imagine my mirth that the nrl will have added two teams and none of them are Perth

the first time I raised the idea of a png team a year ago I was mocked. I literally knew it was labor party policy (why I voted labor) and that albo as a league fan would be a chance of backing it

the only people I remember as backing thisalways were mugab and lambuck because as Penrith fans they get the idea of increasing juniors meaningfully

the reality is this bid addresses all of the alleged weaknesses of a png based team

you literally have the Australian govt paying to help the sport expand.

And yet people want to turn down the 250 millon whilst other sports receive more from the feds

I literally shake my head at some of the so called rugby league fans on here

Nothing stopping png playing games at qcb

obviously cairns want a place at the big dance because they felt left out by a Townsville centric cowboys that paid them lip service

I fully expect the cowboys club to complain about this bid but it is what it is

The Cairns mayor, let’s not get this twisted as a push from the people of Cairns. A 150k city with a shit “stadium” isn’t entitled to NRL games at the expense of a the biggest and most central city in the area with a 25k new stadium.

What a surprise, looks like the ch7 journo was making sht up lol

Papua New Guinea NRL bid boss Andrew Hill has denied the side is set to become the next team granted a licence, despite reports suggesting an announcement is imminent.

After the Dolphins' inaugural season as the 17th NRL side, preparations have ramped up for the NRL to become an 18-team competition.

PNG's inclusion is supported by the Australian government with the consortium for the bid from the government of PNG.

"Look, there's nothing new, but there's no secret that our bid is supported by the Australian government. And of course ... our consortium is actually from the government of PNG. So to have two prime ministers and two governments supporting the bid is a pretty unique situation and I think to take that opportunity with two hands to see what we can do for, the people of PNG and the game is an enormous opportunity.

"But no, I'm not sure why today (Thursday) was the day that everyone decided to talk about the PNG 18th team bid."

Throughout the bidding process, the suggestion some clubs could merge has persisted with the North Sydney Bears consistently discussed as an option.

Hill didn't rule out that sort of possibility in the future, admitting he's open to a partnership.

"Yeah, we are," he said.

"Our bid's so unique, we're a consortium that has got government support and we're owned by the government of PNG, which is a really unique bid to start with. And we've spoken about a Pacific team, a Pacific relationship, bringing our Pacific Brothers along the journey.

"I'm not going to go into detail, but don't be surprised how many other bids and other people have made contact with us directly or indirectly. And what that does is it gives us great confidence that there is a real belief that our bid is genuine. And that our bid is being well-regarded and it will be professional. So we, we're keeping an open mind.

"Things are moving quickly and so we're not gonna cut off any opportunity. We're open, we're engaged, we're listening, but certainly where we are right at the moment solely is we are focusing on PNG, we're focusing on ourselves."
Hill also confirmed Cairns is a consideration as a base for the side.

"We've definitely spoken about Cairns to a lot of people. I think it's important to say that, you know, we need an identity and our identity will be very much PNG, so we'll soon be playing our games at Santos Stadium in Port Moresby," he said.

"But of course, you come back to that earlier question about what our final model might look like and what other opportunities there may be, taking a game to Fiji ... Tonga as part of a broader pacific strategy could be there.

"If we are based in Cairns, obviously Souths have been playing there for 10 years quite successfully so a game or two there, those things are still up for consideration, but definitely playing most of our games in Port Moresby."

When I was about 12 I used to think it would be rad to have a team from PNG in the NSWRL one day - imagine a country whose national sport was league!

Then I grew up educated myself about the country and the quality of play there and realised what a pie in the sky idea it was.

The fact that a team from PNG won't be based in PNG is the first sign that its a ridiculous idea.

Come back to us in 50 years.

This is how democracy works

he feels his city has been left out

I suspect if he hadnt have asked to join the png team then they would’ve gone with the original plan of Darwin

more qld content is a good thing anyway

the original proposals was called the northern birds of prey and was a joint Northern Territory and png bid

He's the mayor of a town that has 170k odd people and average temps of 30+ all year round, he's a dolt if he think he should have his own NRL team when the Cowboys exist.

Who said he wanted his own team
sure, if the council build a 20k stadium and training centre of excellence for png then They can have a part time team.
What they don’t have $450mill lying around? Who’d have thought lol
