Nobody, most of all the NRL has suggested Cairns.

And where is the extra half a billion for a stadium, on top of the hundreds of millions coming from?
No one needs to build some flashy stadium, the games are mostly going to play in Port moresby.. when are you going to get it thru your head.. the use of cairns is purely to be close but on Australian soil and a make use of our hospitals if nessesary, not to to steal your cows vastly expansve juniors
Or get your vote to buy membership or merch for this Pasifika style team,

Who do you think is funding the "pathways" without the government slush fund?

When the money dries up, so do the "pathways".

Imagine the optics of people dying of starvation and disease next door to an academy where a kid is being taught how to play the ball properly.
In Cairns? Is this where the optics is?
Mate take your head out your arse for a second... this isn't some lets split the cowboys territory in two situation, your guys aren't that good anyways... its purely lets base the acedemy and 30man squad in cairns, an send them to PNG for 1st grade games... are you following now, or are we going to start bringing up poverty in lae

So every home game will involve a flight to Port Moresby? At a stadium that's not NRL quality either?

Are you that f**ked in the head?

You should give yourself an uppercut for suggesting something that dumb

That will become a bigger and better stadium over time, i remember a time when the 1st grade cowboys team were laying turf on their local shithole stadium... kettle calling pot black
That was 30 years ago, and as relevant to the modern game as leather footballs

Who will sign up for a team that's playing away every weekend?

This whole thing 100% came from the NRL. It's a market research tactic called a controlled leak. It's used in politics and marketing.

Basically you get 2 lower tier employees - call them canaries. They don't know that both are canaries. You tell both the line that you want to market test. In this case, that PNG is a lock for getting a team. You also deliberately choose your journo to target. Someone hungry. You arrange for one of your canaries to be at the same event as the journo. Usually drinks. Walls come down. Your first canary feeds your line. The hungry yet skeptical reporter asks if there's a second source. The canary says 'someone in X department' could confirm. Because they've been told to. The journo tells their editor. You need confirmation though. What a coincidence. There's a second event with the second canary and the journo. Again - more alcohol. 'What's this I've heard about the PNG team?' Genuine surprise from the canary. How did you know? We have confirmation.

Now you idea is published and market tested. Your campaign or marketing team track the story on social media. Do people like the idea? Or not? Why? Other journos contact higher ups at your organisation. Is it true? No, you deny it. But now you know the public response to your thought bubble.

So I'm not saying PNG is getting a team. I'm saying this is a controlled leak specifically to gauge public responses.
well from what I've seen there is only a handful of nutjobs and sycophantic journos who think it's a good idea... most of the public are on the "they can't be serious?" side.

As silly as Ribot comments were, he never talked about expansion to China, he just said 'ET will be a household name in China".

And even if he did, he never promised it happen within 12 months, like is being claimed here.

Having a PNG team in the NRL would be awesome......as long as it's done right. If PNG has a solid business case and not reliant on the Australian government, then why not.

On the playing side of it, if PNG is based in Cairns, then I would go with a 9-3 model of 9 games in Port Moresby and the remaining three in Cairns against Qld teams (Cowboys, Broncos, Titans, Dolphins). Or at the very least play against one of those Qld teams in Cairns. They would get to host one Qld team in Port Moresby each year.

Plus I would have the nine games in Port Moresby in three blocks of three. Play three home games in a row at Port Moresby. That would cut back on flying.

Having said all of that......I want Perth to be team 18.

PNG, NZ 2, Brisbane 3 and Adelaide could round off a 22 team league one day. The same amount of teams the game had back in '97 across two comps.

They probably need a game or 2 at Suncorp, Eden or Allianz for the extra corporate facilites but having it in blocks makes sense,

You have given me an idea. What if PNG based themselves in Brisbane, and play for example, three home games at Suncorp to take advantage of the corporates. Also they don't need to hop on a plane for away games against the Broncos, Dolphins or Titans.

According to "google", Brisbane to Port Moresby takes 3 hours- 10 minutes. To use the Warriors as a comparison with traveling, Auckland to Sydney as an example is 3 hours- 45 minutes.

Teams like Cowboys, Storm and Warriors are on a plane twelve times a year. The strategy for a potential PNG team is to also be on the plane twelve times a year just like Cowboys, Storm and Warriors.

So if PNG followed a 9-3 model of 9 games in PNG (three blocks of three), 3 in Australia, base themselves in Brisbane instead of Cairns, then a travel breakdown would be something like this:

* Travel to PNG for 9 games, 3 per trip. Three plane trips.
*Three home games at Suncorp. No plane trip
*Three away games to Broncos, Dolphins and Titans. No plane trip
*Nine away games elsewhere. Nine plane trips

So that would equate to the use of a plane on twelve occasions just like Storm, Cowboys and Warriors.

It’s doable with your idea of games in blocks

don’t know if the nrl is smart enough to work that out

Brisbane could clutter an eventual Brisbane jets/tigers team

Ribot says rl will be big in China, everyone mocks
vlandys says rl will be big in usa, everyone praises him for being a visionary
the game might have more credibility if it could at least be big across the countries it’s played in professionally

Why would brisbane businesses pay $20k for a box to watch a png club at Suncorp? most will already be spending their money on home broncos and dolphins games surely?

I’ve been saying for a while if PNG have to be FIFO then Sydney or Brisbane for a base makes more sense than Cairns with a creative draw for the away games.

Based in Sydney you can have most away games against NSW teams. Based in Brisbane at least 3 away games in SEQ plus potentially some home games at Suncorp against Broncos and/or Dolphins plus Magic weekend. Potential for extra away games in the area if any Sunshine Coast or Toowoomba away games are played.
