So future generations of Australians will be locked into a funding a foreign sporting team for ever?

Good luck taking that one to the electorate.

Luckily for you, no Government will ever commit to such an arrangement.
Forever? No. There will be a contract timeline and that's how long the government is liable for. I doubt it would be anything less than 10 years though. We are literally on the hook with foreign governments for decades all the time. Just look at the sub deal. Any if voters don't like it after the election then voters can vote them out. That's how democracy works. And if the Potato Governnent does win and ends the deal, then don't be surprised if the PNG approves a Chinese naval port.

Even if it’s 10 years and they get the full $200m… will it be worth it?

I would prefer them funding development academies and trying to improve their playing stocks first ….

Where has it been discussed that this deal will be a contractual arrangement??

At best this would be short term funding with the mistaken belief that it will one day be sustainable.

If you think the funding is the least of its concerns, you're off your chops.

It's THE major concern
Are you arguing that businesses and governments don't sign contracts?

You're getting ridiculous.

There's no team without a contract.

And in that case the government goes back to wondering how they will stop the PNG from accepting Chinese investments in other ways.

Not with $1B break clauses.

I mean the TV deal is only til 2028 currently anyway.

2 Fan base - population of 7 million people. The obvious statement is to say is that the country is poor this could be said for many countries in the world. There are people who run businesses and that are successful. These people will support the team and so the people who don’t have that luxury.

It's up there for GDP with countries like Nicaragua, Angola and Uzbekistan. I'm sure we can all name successful professional sporting teams with huge fan bases from those countries.

3 Alignment with another strong brand if they join with North Sydney Bears in a combined bid, this would be a crate, outcome because it allows us to do 1,2 above & bring back a key market in the Sydney area. We don’t want a team to be based out of North Sydney permanently 12 games per year. We want a team to represent Nth Sydney. it’s highly unlikely that the people of North, Sydney and surrounds will reject a PNG association.

How does a PNG team represent North Sydney?

This is all a soft diplomacy effort. There's no way this would be happening if China wasn't seeking to encircle Australia with naval and air bases. Setting up academies doesn't have the same prestige in international relations as what having an NRL club has. Again - this is the government's idea, not the NRL's.

It’s one thing to have the idea in theory … another to implement it ….

I‘m not arguing about it being the Govt’s idea …. but it’s not the right time for the NRL to be involving itself with a decision like this because the Aust Govt has geopolitical concerns and for $20 mil a year.. .. it they could field a team with locals at NRL standard it would be a different story,,, concentrate on that first ..

If the government were to cancel it's contract after PNG start playing and the NRL can't meet its broadcast commitments then they will sue the government for a loss of earnings. It's pretty simple.

There's no way the NRL will get into this if it risks their main revenue stream without some kind of breach clause.

The Australian govt wouldn't hold the licence. If they pull their grant and the licence holder can't find other funding, that's not the government's fault.

There's no way this team gets made with government funding without a formal contract and that includes a breach clause for loss of future earnings. It's a standard business practice. I can't believe I have to explain this to people.
Your wasting your time

facts and logic have no part In the anti png whine

So everyone is happy that the australian government wants to use the nrl for diplomatic purposes like a cheap whore.
Nobody is. And that's why this will never fly

It's an Albo brain fart that will be at popular as Ebola with voters.

Most of the people supporting it would also be cheering it on if they wanted to create a team in Beijing to show support for the CCP.
