Oh yeh they had to build the new western airport in 3 years because govts can’t sign longer contacts

excellent point
It'd be all their subcontractors through the Western Sydney Airport corporation. Also Im pretty sure the Northern Territory also signed a 99 year lease of their port to China... maybe Perth Red could have stopped it!

Not one post on how the opposition could just choose a "Southern" leader to create a groundswell to oppose funding an NRL team.
Oh how the Smellbourne press would lap that up.
Thinking about it, that could be fun.

There’s a big difference between funding a specific building project that’s going to take years to complete and annual funding for a program. The two are not comparable.

Again , no he isn’t, he’s funding Tasmania a building project. Not giving the club an annual funding for X amount of years.

the equivalent would be australia rebuilding Port Moresby stadium into an nrl standard one.

Tbh 99% of Australians won’t give a sht if he does or doesn’t fund png club. I’d say very few actually know we currently give them $400-500 mill a year in ’aid’.

Over the whole time frame? Whatever the time frame may be.
Reports are league is 250 million

But if they want to cancel png and the Tasmanian afl team that’s fair enough both are equally reliant on govts to exist

it’s money to go to help tasmania getting an afl team

the tassie govt is the one giving money to the afl team

as I said happy to cancel both png and Tasmania

anything else makes someone look like a hypocrite or a fumbler

Probably so, but as this thread has become political, you'd be safe to presume that the opposition would use anything to find a negative, then prey on the simple minded.

Ever heard of pork barreling? If you think he’s funding tassie because he wants to see them have an afl club you’re very naive!

Funding PNG isn’t winning him any votes. And as a counter measure to chinas growing influence in the south pacific it’s arguably a pretty minimal influencer. Even as far as RL is concerned The money would actually be much better used if it was spent making the digicell cup a FT professional comp.
But that doesn’t get any 5min news exposure.

again so far to the question of ‘what happens when the money dries up‘, which it will, all I’ve heard is ‘well they Can close them down and give the license to someone else’. I mean is that really something that sounds like a good idea?

It will be unpopular in QLD and NSW let alone hugely unpopular in the AFL states. (because there is literally nothing in this for Aussies)

You think Sky News will miss an opportunity to brain Albo about pork barrelling a multi million dollar sports team?

If it did come to pass imagine the press when one of the PNG team gets inevitability gets busted for something "Our Taxpayer money goes to insert crime here"

And if our sport is mainlined into the Govt teat like that, what sort of shitty politics will we have to get involved in? Will Vlandys have to publicly address the West Papaun situation?

I’m going to forward this post to albo and let him know your concerns

I’ve said this before with the current nrl funding model any club will be profitable now

the 250 millon is just a turbo charger

heck the storm became a strong club with one hundred millon and no juniors

png have unlimited juiors and unlike melb love rugby league so imagine what the money will do

and the png govt support hasn’t been factored in yet

This just comes across as sour grapes tbh

Exactly.
It would be the referendum on steroids.

He’s announced 4 years of funding for fiji union and not been a murmur from the news outlets.

Do you honestly believe a png club can raise $15mill a year plus in fc operations? You think a png club can get the same fan and corporate revenue a year as Storm ?
we’ve seen over last two weeks the crowds when they charge a reasonable, by nrl standards, ticket price.

Better then the storm

yeh of course

you must’ve watched different games to me

how many people would you expect for fiji vs Cook Islands in png

with the money being thrown at png they will be a powehouse

it wasn’t that long ago storm we’re losing 5 million pa and were a basketcase

Albo didn't announce anything, that's a ScoMo era govt initiative for all of the Pacific for Womens Rugby ($1.8M total sponsorship) and $52M total for 4+ years for multiple nations.

You are high if you think a sport as high profile as the NRL is not going to get any press about its funding, finances etc.

That is an old one.

There was a new announcement last week with a statement from Paul Conroy

Haha right.

supposed to be a rugby league mad country and they can only get 4k at an international? Shows how many can afford to pay to see game.

whilst the gov money is there, but then what?

which should set some massive alarm bells ringing for a club in a third world country, if it took storm 20 years to be profitable (which is highly questionable as they dont release reports so dont know how you know what their bottom line is?) with a big fanbase, new stadium and strong corporate support how will png manage it?
