“I'm not going to go into detail, but don't be surprised how many other bids and other people have made contact with us directly or indirectly. And what that does is it gives us great confidence that there is a real belief that our bid is genuine. And that our bid is being well-regarded and it will be professional. So we, we're keeping an open mind.

"Things are moving quickly and so we're not gonna cut off any opportunity. We're open, we're engaged, we're listening, but certainly where we are right at the moment solely is we are focusing on PNG, we're focusing on ourselves."

Hill also confirmed Cairns is a consideration as a base for the side.

"We've definitely spoken about Cairns to a lot of people. I think it's important to say that, you know, we need an identity and our identity will be very much PNG, so we'll soon be playing our games at Santos Stadium in Port Moresby," he said.

"But of course, you come back to that earlier question about what our final model might look like and what other opportunities there may be, taking a game to Fiji ... Tonga as part of a broader pacific strategy could be there.

"If we are based in Cairns, obviously Souths have been playing there for 10 years quite successfully so a game or two there, those things are still up for consideration, but definitely playing most of our games in Port Moresby."

PNGRFL Appoints Tony Archer

Papua New Guinea Rugby League appoint Tony Archer as Manager of Competition Governance and Match Officials.

Rugby League in PNG has received another major boost with the appointment of Tony Archer to head up their Competition Governance and Match Officials.

On the back of Joe Grima’s appointment as Head of Player Pathways and Justin Holbrook’s decision to take on the National Coaching role with the Kumuls, Archer’s appointment is another major step forward for PNG as they look to create a game-wide structure that will help them become the next team admitted to the National Rugby League.

The passion for the game in the country has again been on show in recent months, with sell-out crowds for the finals series of the Digicel Exxon Mobil Cup matches, including the Grand Final and the more recently held PM’s XIII weekend.

Stanley Hondina, CEO PNGRFL, saw Archer’s appointment as another significant step forward for rugby league in PNG:

“Officiating and Competition Governance is an incredibly important part of the game and to have someone of Tony’s experience and expertise head up that area for PNG is tremendous news.”
“We are looking to create the best possible pathways for our players and that requires high quality officiating and professional competition governance from the grass roots all the way through to the senior level.”
“Tony has performed this role successfully with the NRL, and he will bring a wealth of knowledge and ideas that will help us create a new generation of officials for both the men’s and women’s programs going forward.”
“We look forward to Tony starting with us in the coming weeks”.

Tony Archer expressed his excitement at the opportunity to contribute to the game in PNG:

“Building the foundation in Officiating and Governance from the grass roots upwards is crucial when it comes to creating a strong pathways system in sport.”
“When it comes to being able to contribute to the game in Papua New Guinea, it is a unique and exciting opportunity to work with such passionate people who love the game of Rugby League and are so determined to see it continue to grow.”
“Speaking to those involved I know the time and effort that has gone into creating a strategic approach to building a professional structure and making sure that the development of officials and the correct competition governance sits as a high priority.”
“I can’t wait to start and to work with the next generation of officials. Having seen the steps that have been put in place in terms of pathways and coaching, I’m excited about what lies ahead for the game in PNG.”

“The PNG NRL bid was instrumental in the appointment of Joe Grima as head of elite pathways development, and he oversaw the Junior Kumuls side which narrowly went down 20-14 to the Australian Schoolboys last month.”

Tony Archer is/was General Manager - Officiating, Development & Pathways & Affiliated States.

This shows where the priorates are at.

I haven't seen him in Perth for 5 years since he told West Coast Pirates staff he'd prefer to run a combine than develop talent in Perth.

I’m thinking that Albo bringing PVL with him to the Whitehouse to hobnob with Sleepy Joe Biden is the payoff for PNG 18th team

Albo stroking PVLs ego as the most powerful man in Aust sport
Seems a sound factor to base such an important decision for the game on lol
Mind you knowing Vlandys self importance you could well be right.

The Albanese government has reportedly offered up to $25 million annually to put a team into Papua New Guinea as a means of dealing with the continual geopolitical threat of China influencing the region.

V’landys and the commission are expected to move ahead with plans to introduce an 18th team into the competition as early as 2026.

I think it's a matter of when PNG come in, not if.

The way the media has gone on a roll with it is very reminiscent of when team 17/Brisbane 2 was up for grabs and the media essentially ignored all bidders but the Dolphins. We all know what happened there so I’m thinking the same might be happening again.
