The only reason people could have to hold serious reservations about starting a professional sports team in one of the poorest countries in the world is because they are "salty".

What a well thought out and detailed rebuttal.

Maybe not … but it looks like it’s happening though

becasue I am guessing not many players are going to choose to play for a club where you have to fly EVERY weekend for games? Especially where your home games involve an international journey and playing in high humidity in a country with ltd hospital expertise.

Its not only of no value, it likely DEVALUES the TV deal. Cost of overseas production for no return and one of the lowest drawing games each weekend (based on Warriors Australian audiences)

All of this is irrelevant though as the NRL has the $ signs in its eyes so the actual long term viability of it all seems a very distant secondary thought.
Perth is the one that will struggle vs cairns

your point on production costs is trivial

it’s good you have accepted that the nrl can’t turn down the dollars

People in Perth can afford and pay for Kayo or Fox subs, people in PNG can't. People in Perth can afford to buy the shit that gets advertised like KFC and Sportbet and Bundy Rum. People in PNG can't

I keep asking how are these people going to watch on TV and attend matches, or is the Aus govt going to pay for them to do that?
Who in Perth doesn’t already have kayo that wants to watch rugby league

how many new subscribers will an nrl team add

Perth doesn’t even offer a unique time slot that can’t be filled by another side

This isnt going to change lack of tv money. Im all for NRL bringing in more revenue, they need to. But putting a likely albatross around the neck of the comp in doing so doesnt seem so smart to me.
Perth red is happy to include government grants which only lasted two years as part of afl revenue

but now it’s rugby league receiving the money he’s worrried about the sustainability

it’s pretty obvious your against this bid no matter what and not for logistical reasons

it’s because your vision of growing rugby league (copying afl) isn’t shared by the actual people who run the game

You said a PNG team will offer no value to the broadcasters. I pointed out that the same accusation can be levelled at Perth.

Your response?

"Only focus on PNG's weaknesses!"

Yes, the PNG proposition is only viable because it's funded by the Aus and PNG Govs. It's a one of a kind proposition that we'll never see again. It's also one that benefits our game in so many ways. The pride and happiness it will provide to Papuans will be through the roof. It will help the game turn PNG's passion for the sport into active players who will strengthen the talent pool and Test match football.

Don't you want a strong PNG that is capable of competing with the "big three" at the RLWC?

We'll never get a better opportunity to grow the game in PNG.
Excellent post

eh? Ones an infrastructure grant the other is required funding forevermore for the sustainability of a club. That you cant see any difference is really quite incredible.

Im not against a viable and long term sustainable PNG club based in PNG. Im all for it!
But this isnt any of that.

You think players are going to be rushing to a club that has to fly every week for games and play in Port Moresby? Hmmmm.

It could, but it wont.

Sure it will
just like you said the dolphins were a bad choice and png was no chance off an nrl team wheni first raised it
I said dolphins were not the best choice.
And they wouldnt have if the govt wasnt pssing away our money and the nrl werent so short term $ driven. Its totally nonsensical beyond a cash grab. And when that cash runs out.......

nothing to back up your claims about Perth... oh except for 9gem ratings and crowds from 1996

What makes you think there's more than 15k people who will be active fans of a Perth-based team?

The Reds only averaged 13,390 in their debut season with a strong team.

The WACA hosternNSWRL games in the 80s and early 90s. These games drew bigger crowds than the Reds in 1995.

It's delusional to think the Pirates will fare much better than the Reds.

There just isn't enough interest in Perth to support a local NRL team. The odd Origin or double header that's played once a year is not indicative of what a Perth-based team will average to 12 games per season.

I know you're an ignorant f**kwit, but from the article

It is understood the estimated $600m investment is not solely for a new NRL team, but part of a wider social, economic and educational blueprint to strengthen a nation of 10 million
