you dont think they wont be creaming some off the top? How do you think they are going to sell it to the other clubs who have final say?
As you say it will be worth zero to tv, in fact probably detrimental to tv value given extra costs for tv to produce and overseas game and the very real likelihood PNG will be the lowest watched club in Australia. He will have to sweeten the idea with 17 other clubs somehow.
Wow you just came up with another positive for a png nrl team

PVL “stressed “ that the other bids haven’t missed out as NRL “open to 20 teams by 2032”
OK, we've got to hold him to this.

20 by 2032 (at latest). GOT to happen.

[Edit] I'd go even further to say if team 18 is Brisbane Easts /PNG joint venture, then 19 and 20 have to be NZ 2 and Perth.

Worst case scenario if PNG funding is pulled, it reverts to a Brisbane Easts-run 3rd Brisbane team.

nothing new, weve been saying its little more than a cash grab by NRL for sometime.
Nothing else about the bid stacks up. No govt money and it wouldnt even be considered as team 22.

yeah, i'm wondering what the other 17 clubs think of this... you are right, PVL must have promised something to them.

Tigers will be happy, no wooden spoons for them for as long as PNG are in the comp lol

So you agree it’s in the nrls best interest to grab that sweet sweet 600 million ?

I agree it makes the books look good, ethically dodgy as f**k and for whats best for the sport of Rugby League in Australia, no I dont think many agree its the best choice.

Murray is right to attack the idea but his reasoning is wrong. A PNG team isn't going to make the NRL any money, especially through broadcast rights.

Gee… Media spin merchant not disclosing the full story about something in an attempt to stoke up outrage ,,, say it aint so brother …

Im sure he is very concerned with the state of the Hospitals in PNG though

why do you answer like a politician ? Are you going to have a crack at albanese job ?

it’s good we can conclude that with the money being thrown at the nrl they just can’t say no

The “ethics” again..,

The NRL bid is from the PNG Govt, and they have requested the Aust Govt to help them out …

Why is any Govt money given to sport .. even here in Aust ..?

Things like schools, health , public transport and other infrastructure will never be adequately funded according to some, regardless of how much money is spent,,.

The Aust Govt will still give PNG another $500-600m a year on top of this …

Ive no issue with money going to PNG schools and improving kids health through sport in PNG. Thatd be great if thats where all the money was going.
However in a country that has such incredible levels of poverty, corruption, desperately needs basic infrastructure, health care, crime redress and numerous other social priority problems, the notion of spending tens of millions of $'s to pay mostly Australians and nz'ers living in cairns to play professional RL, and the NRl skimming some of it, under the guise of 'helping PNG' is pretty abhorrent.

Well take it up with the PNG govt then who are the ones driving this …we don’t live there so how they want the money to be utilised is not going to impact on us …

Whether we think it to be realistic goal or not … this is the price that they have asked for to keep the Chinese away …

Yep, precisely this. There's a plethora of ways that money can be spent to tangibly improve the lot of PNG's population that's not a bloody footy team.

It’s a real shame Peter vlandys and Anthony albanese aren’t reading this thread and taking some sage advice from the resident geopolitical experts from Perth and Townsville
so how is this team going to be competitive? they are going to struggle to sign any good established first graders already in the NRL

How much are tickets for games going to cost, can enough people over there afford it? what about merch? would they even bother having memberships?

Who is broadcasting the games, once again, does anyone have access to watch games or will it be like 1 TV per village of 30 people watching on satellite?

these are your answers? LOL
Is cairns any different to Townsville ?

and you can hear the defersning silence of Aussie tv companies clamouring for a Perth nrl team

If they get bennett they will actually be stronger than the cowboys imo

we have teams like the tigers who aren’t competitive e anyway if that’s your criteria are you saying boot them out
