That's literally every sensible person's position on a PNG NRL side. . . It's probably inevitable given time, but neither the league nor the country is ready for it yet, and it'll end in tears if it happens to early.
That’s the thing, a proper png team in port moresby backed long term by an nrl that can afford to and has started to support it would be awesome. This govt support could have gone along way to creating that if it was being spent on: stadium upgrade, jnr facilities, schools comps, making digicell cup professional and introducing a second host plus cup side.

Crocodiles would be a good name. Probably the best name for a rugby league team.

The Cowboys wanted to be called the Crocodiles.
The NBL would probably have something to say about another group breaching their trademark.

Maybe you could get away with Salties or Crocs or something similar, but the NBL would probably still dispute it. They also sound very Australian for what is supposed to be a PNG team.

The trademark has expired.

That’s incorrect. The NBL has taken over the ip of as many of the old teams as they could, including the Crocodiles.

Meh.. The Townsville Crocodiles are dead and not coming back… F them
The NBL still produces Crocodiles merch and content, i.e. they’re still using it even if the team doesn’t exist anymore.

They’ve also made it clear that they’re holding onto their defunct brands in case they ever want to launch teams in those markets again.

The NBL will challenge if anybody in Australia tries to lunch a pro-team called the Crocodiles, and they’ll almost certainly win.

How much money is the NBL making out of this merchandise for a non existent team ?

jf it’s an issue ..,then money talks .. probably $100k would get it done for the NRL …

If they (NBL) don’t like that then off to court..

If the NRL wants that name .., then they will seek and probably get a solution with the NBL …

Probably more than you'd guess. Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

There're leagues where defunct team's merch is amongst the highest sellers when it's produced. The Houston Oilers, Seattle Supersonics, Montreal Expos, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Vancouver Grizzlies, would all be making a tidy sum for their respective teams and leagues annually.

It's actually an area where the NRL has really f**ked up. It's a travesty that they allowed so much of that old IP to be lost to the game.

You need to lay off the crackpipe if you think Kestelman and the NBL would be open to selling at all, let alone for as little as a $100k. They don't need the money and there're easier ways of making it even if they did, like selling more Townsville Crocodiles merch and streaming more of their old games for example lol.

Going to court would be expensive and the NRL would almost certainly lose. It wouldn't be worth the risk, especially not when there're so many workable unique branding opportunities for a PNG side.

if the NRL want the name they will have it ..

Edit … I just looked up other defunct NBL teams which may cause issues …

Hobart Devils ( Tas AFL team)

Hunter Pirates ( Perth NRL team)
