And what happened to him ? was sacked shortly after wasnt he?

He lost control of his own product with Nine then offloading/selling the games back to Foxtel … he managed to upset the only Pay Tv operator Rupert Murdoch to cause him to throw more money at the AFL out of spite…

If thats what you call a success…
Sold 3 games to nein exclusively but forgot to put a clause in they couldn’t resell it

also forgot to exclude streaming so nine paid less again

took away Monday night football and Fox exclusive super Saturday

Afl got an extra one hundred million pa out of spite and he said they always preferred afl

we had to go back grovelling and got stuck with Friday 6 pm which is the worst time slot in history all so fox could canibilse nine Friday night game

smith was a genius

But I’m not talking about club revenue, I’m talking about central revenue. for example Toyota pay over 50% more for naming rights to the afl than telstra pay nrl for same thing.

AwFuL draws twice as many people to its games with four times asany members. It also has strong supporter amongst the upper class.

would they? Would they pay double what they pay now? And basically you’re agreeing with me lol ch7 pay more as afl has a 5 metro reach. as does ptv as does telstra for its connections.

No, I'm not agreeing at all. If metro reach was as important as you claim then Ch9 would pay for all Storm games to be broadcast into Melbourne on 9Gem and want every Broncos and Dolphins game broadcast into Brisbane on Ch9. They're unwilling to cough up the money, despite admitting on several occasions that the Broncos are their most lucrative team. You're just going to have to accept that the broadcasters don't rate our game as highly as fumbleball. Kerry Stokes if a fumbleball fan from Perth.

murdoch is a hard core businessman first and foremost, news ltd aren’t paying any more than they value it at, and that’s more than they value nrl despite nrl having bigger audiences, so what’s different? Well afl has 16 of 18 clubs in 5 Australian metro markets, nrl has 12.5 of 17 Australian clubs in 3 metro markets, hmmmmm.

AwFuL also has more support amongst the upper class. High end sponsors recognise this and pay accordingly.

Ch7 paid $30m over 5 years, at $6m per annum, for the VFL when it had teams in Australia's four biggest metropolitan regions. Ch10 paid $48m over three years, at $15m per annum, for the NSWRL during this period, despite it having no teams in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. It doesn't match up with your theory, does it?

No it’s not, there’s multiple factors why we generate less revenue. But lack of national metro reach is certainly one of them. It creates a perception for sponsors, and tv, of a lessor market penetration limited to fewer metro markets. But yeh having Vlandys negotiating tv deals doesn’t help. The game doesn’t have the penetration in melbourne that afl has in Sydney And has virtually zero in perth and adleiade. Address that and we will start to see us catch up. Or we could go to Vegas lol
You're still spinning this lie, despite the fact I dropped this damning truth bomb on you yesterday?

In 1987, Ch7 paid just $30m over 5 years for the VFL rights.

1987 – Ch7 pays $6 million a year ($30 million) for 5 years from 1988 – 1992

The VFL had teams in every metro area except Adelaide.

In 1989, Ch10 paid $48m over 3 years for the NSWRL rights.

1989. Ten pays 48 million for a 3 year deal to broadcast the NSWRL competition.

The only metro areas that had an NSWRL team between 1988-92 were Brisbane and Sydney.

PR likes to spin the lie that Smith went good because FTA paid more... despite reality showing that Fox bought games off them. The net result was ch9 got a great deal

Whilst I agree that metro reach is somewhat important, I don’t think it is anywhere near the only factor.

They have better negotiators for one and they also don’t have their head so far up News Ltd’s a*** as well. Longer games and more ad breaks would also be another.

Ad break stoppages are more than double RL's.

A League and RU have more metro reach and are closer to RL as far as stoppages go and are way behind

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo has lavished praise on Papua New Guinea’s passion for rugby league after spending time in Port Moresby with the country’s Prime Minister James Marape during the Pacific Championships.
In a further boost to PNG’s hope of securing the 18th licence when the ARL Commission makes a call on expansion, Abdo walked away from the experience with a deeper appreciation for the country’s’ passion for the code.

“The passion for rugby league in Papua New Guinea is inspirational,” Abdo said.

“It unites the country in a unique way. In a country with over 800 languages, rugby league is a language everyone understands - 15,000 fans at the Pacific Championships matches sounded like 50,000 fans.

“It was wonderful to spend time with Prime Minister Marape, who shares a deep connection with the game and to witness first hand the passion and genuine love the PNG community have for the game.”

It was Abdo’s first time in PNG having raced to the match having attended Australia’s game in New Zealand the night before.

Abdo’s support for PNG comes after Australia’s Pacific Minister Pat Conroy revealed they were talking to their government counterparts about how the Australian government could best support any bid.

“(PNG) would love to see an announcement in 2025 with the games starting in 2027-2028,” Conroy said.

“I think that’s a timeline that makes sense. We are talking to PNG about how we can best support the bid. Obviously that might involve allocating resources.

“It’s really important that the NRL and the Papua New Guineans are in this and the Australian government stands ready to support it where it is appropriate.”

Haha.

Abdo had never even visited PNG until now.

Must be a deadly serious expansion move

Nobodies questioning their passion for RL Abdo. The question is can a third world country run a $35mill a year professional sports club in an Australian competition and stay viable? Maybe he could answer that question in his next interview?

PNG don't need North Sydney Bears or Brisbane Tigers.

The money they're getting from the Aus Gov is more than enough.

Any news on a signed contract between the ARLC and Albo to guarantee this deal takes place?

If the money is provided by the Aus Gov then it doesn't matter.

Do you think the govt money is indefinite? if no how do you think they go about raising $15mill plus a year in football club revenue post funding?
I wish the nrl was like afl and happy to underwrite long term a png club but I doubt they will.

The worst case scenario is the ARLC has to foot the bill or revoke the licence. If they choose to foot the bill then the game will see a return on the investment. The players that will enter the NRL via the new pathways being established will be more than worth the cost. Test football will benefit from the development.

The game will never get a better opportunity to create a fourth tier one RL nation.
