Im not talking soccer. Think of foreign mining or construction companies or any of the foreign businesses.

if the average nrl salary is $345k, those player are paying $130k in tax.

I think a lot of players would be willing to move to a tropical PNG resort for a $150k+ pay increase.

And if you dont like it when you try it, move back to aus for let money and let someone else try…

Except sportspeople are the only real comparison.

And where is the evidence that the PNG govt gives tax free salaries?

We can't get players to move out of Bondi

We're talking about footballers here. Who like drinking, girls and the night life.
At best you're going to get the desperadoes that no one wants to sign.

A png side is a fantastic idea in its most literal sense. Reality is this is an unworkable idea.

Hahah, clearly you have never met a big4 consultant. Drinking, girls, nightlife and money is the point of that job.

why would athletes be the only comparison? Young guys wanting to make a lot of money quickly. Not exactly restricted to football…

the tax free thing is not confirmed. That is the negotiation that Vlad is talking about. If PNG doesnt agree to it, then the team has no chance

V'landys needs to remember who butters his bread.

If he's going to ignore the wishes of the fans, players and game's commercial partners then it will come back to bite him on the arse.

PNG is a developing country. There's no pretending otherwise. But unless you've been there, you don't really know what it's like. That area near the waterfront wouldn't be out of place in a town like Cairns. Where do you guys think all the civil servants and foreigners eat and stay? In shanties?
That's mental, a 100m2 spot that foreigners live in (often on rents that would make Sydney residents shocked) isn't anything like Cairns, or suddenly mean that NRL players will jump at the chance.

And don't pretend like they just walk around 24hrs a day like it's f**king Hawaii or something.

Regardless this is about no99 on the list of issues that a Port Moresby team will have.

You guys seem to have lost all touch with reality.

Luckily for us the Feds are broke and it's not on the agenda anymore.

yeah its the kind of place you stay for a few weeks, maybe a couple of months. Not years.... I've stayed in compound type places in India and Philippines for work.

PNG is by means a done deal.

“Then there will be a recommendation from the subcommittee of Misha Zelinsky [executive general manager corporate affairs], Kate Jones [commissioner], Peter Beattie [commissioner], Andrew Abdo [NRL chief executive] and myself.

“That’ll go back to the commission. If the commission agrees, we’ll go to the clubs. We’ll go to the members to show them what our plan is to see if they are in agreeance. There’s no decision going to be made for a few months yet because we want to make sure there’s sufficient time for consultation and feedback from the clubs.

“You have to give them the opportunity to comment and provide analysis. But I’m very confident that what the clubs will see, they’ll be happy with. The numbers are now aligned. We’re happy with the numbers. We had to work out where it was going to be spent.”

V’landys wouldn’t speculate on the time frame for the team to be introduced, nor did he guarantee the Papua New Guinea team would be the next to join the competition as the 18th team.

First the ARLC needs to agree. Then the clubs need to agree. Then the members need to agree.

Tropical Island resort sounds nice but youre in a compound with the same people all year round. Not getting away from work.
No, not at all really. The season only runs 7 months and you're literally flying out every second weekend. They could easily give players a couple extra days onn those trips and even though the week.
Some players may actually prefer a more focused environment around their playing schedule as well.

I've soured on PNG as a side but compound living isn't anything new. My old man spent 8 years in Saudi(most of it post 9/11) living in a compound because of the tax free carrot. Can easily see players going if its tax free. We're talking nearly double their contract.

The other clubs will be against a PNG team getting any leg ups over them in the player market.

All sounds a bit Halliburton contractors and blackwater mercenaries living in the green zone.
