It’s a dirt cheap geopolitical move that will potentially save us significantly more over time by reducing china’s potential influence in the region.

It’s also a difficult political issue to sell to taxpayers who may not understand the regional politics.

Good chunk of the population will support the team because its "fighting china" and they'll have all sorts of Murdoch pieces to make them feel good. But good luck selling them on rich aussie clubs with asset bases in the 100s of millions getting a pay off from the the tax payer while they're in a cost of living crisis.
Murdoch press will not support a ALP policy.

China is Rugby Union in Australia.

They are currently killing themselves from the inside, and we don't need to do anything but sit back and watch it burn

It’s not about what china is in Australia, it’s about what China can potentially be in Australia’s neighbourhood. Having RL fanatical politicians and regular people in PNG linked to Australia via the NRL is possibly one of the best returns on a soft power exercise a government can get. It’s fantastic value for the Australian taxpayer.

The potential big issues are selling the politics of it and the logistics required to make it work effectively.

Read my post again, I didn't mention China "in Australia". China's economic situation is killing itself from the inside now.

It's a shit idea for the NRL to get involved in geo- politics and highly doubtful that it would curb any Chinese expansion anyway.

What if PNG allow China to build a sea port in the next decade on their territory? Is the NRL suddenly forced to axe the side and compromise TV deals etc?

This. I think Labor waits till after the election. Libs probably support too if it's not an election issue.

When have they supported Albo or the ALP? (Or frankly said anything positive about RL)
Murdoch will support what suits his interests. Australia against China does exactly that because he can sell fear mongering in the telegraph. You're mistaken thinking Murdoch is beholden to either side of politics.

Nah the agreement will be signed shortly

if future govts try and reneg the agreement is in writing

again 60 million pa for the federal budget is basically a rounding error

it’s a ten percent increase on what png currently get from us

Run me through the great gamut of Labor policies or even politicians that he has supported over the years?

Guys it's in writing. Once something is in writing it can never be changed. No govt has ever cancelled a contract before. Just ask France.
