You're right. There's a pathway already with the Hunters.
It'll take at least 20 million a year to have an NRL team.
Imagine the impact of that same 20 million was just spent on juniors and development!
20 million goes a bloody loooong way in PNG!
It would create dozens of NRL standard kumuls which in turn would be used to fill the rosters of current and future expansion NRL sides.

It would also strengthen the PNG national side creating more competitive internationals in the region between Australia, nz and tonga etc.

It would

an nrl team would do that even more so plus give the local people a lot of joy and the nrl a sold out stadium every two weeks

NZ would actually be my pick for team 18

Hunters are getting Aust Govt funding, As does the Fiji Ron Massey Cup team. So you combine that for starters.
Then you add what the salary Cap, Tourism and the other benefits that would come from the upgrade infastructure.

Is Northern NSW or Central QLD any better? Atleast there are miners who put money into PNG

People could afford to go watch games in Northern NSW and Central QLD. They would also be able to recruit players. They would also probably attract more interest in Australia

Don’t get me wrong they are not good options and they would be way down the list- I’m definitely not advocating them - but they wouldn’t need the government to support them or to be constantly bailed out.

I think on average around k30
That works out to $12 AUD, which is more than the $10 per ticket at Wynnum Manly. They'd need to charge k120-150 per ticket for an NRL game. Possibly k200. The GDP per capita for PNG is just k9,408.

How many people could afford to pay k1,440-1,880 for a season pass -- k2,400 if it's k200 ticket -- when the average Papuan only has k9,408 over a calendar year?

Not many.

It's always struck me why there's so many empty seats at hunters games pre-covid.

This is why awarding a 3rd world country like PNG a NRL franchise would be financial suicide.

Same goes for the hosting of a world Cup.

It's amazing that people laugh at the suggestion of spreading the game to a City State that has more people than Sydney, yet want us to add an NRL team to a small city in a third world country that will never be sustainable.

Tbf they do play the the game there, people see the number of kids playing and get misty eyed. The harsh reality is the place is so far from being able to host a $30million a year club it’s not funny.
what we should be discussing is how do we set things up and invest to tap into the fact that rl is the #1 game there. That would be far more beneficial to RL in the nrl and in png.

If we one day had 25 Justin Olams players across the nrl that would be Just as valuable as a png nrl club, but without the barriers that exist in having an nrl club there. That’s the goal!

If the Hunters entered teams in the QRL's lower age competitions then more Papuans would make it to the NRL.

If Albanese wants to make a difference then he should set money aside for talent scouts to run training camps across PNG each year. Give the best prospects a scholarship to study in Australia at a school that has a strong rugby league program. That way the kids will get an education and the ability to further their footballing career.

Why aren't we talking about taking a fixture there at least once a year though?
The government could buy 1 fixture right?
That would be a good start

when people see the players manage to make it out of the country alive and the game is sold out it would start to convince people

Let's be honest. A team in PNG isn’t happening in the near future.
What we should have is a game there once a year. Make it a regular fixture , it'll be like their Melbourne cup.
If say Manly took a home games there that rates poorly a home like the Titans or Cowboys.
A Thursday night game.
Both clubs make so money and PNG get a game.
Spend the week in PNG signing autographs, doing coaching clinics and meeting the brightest talents.

Really needs to happen tbh

Clubs will only do this if it makes financial sense, and it's safe for the players.

Until someone stumps up the money, it's unlikely to happen.

Internationals are a better option for mine.

It would be a lot of money for a third world country to spend on one game. If they did spend money on it then they could use the event to promote PNG as a tourist destination.

An annual game in Port Moresby during the round that includes ANZAC Day would be an appropriate way of honouring the Kokoda Trail campaign. It could be something that our government chips a bit of money towards with our PM going up there for a ceremony, then sitting with the PNG PM at the football game.
