Yeh it’s not like he’s privy to what the federal govt are offering and is just posting random stuff on the internet and guessing
Yeh it’s also not like he’s noted for speaking first and thinking second lol

I actually think it is a chance now; I’d never thought I’d say that. If they do it though I’d prefer they put it in NZ. Base it there and have a few games in the Islands.

It would be risky but if you do it that way I think it might succeed.

Is there really going to be a fanbase who identifies with a PNG/PI hybrid team? Will they only sign players from that background and become the games first race based team? Sounds like we’ve got another “The” coming lol

That’s the risk. You couldn’t have a race based team for a variety of reasons.

I think the key thing is where you base it and how you could recruit players.

That’s why I don’t think the Cairns/PNG thing is a good idea - they have nothing to offer each other and practically nobody could be recruited.

However, if you base it in NZ (say 9 games there) then there is at least a large Islander audience you could target and there is a better chance that you could recruit players (because it is a more fixed location in a first world country) The negatives with the idea are corporates and if you base it in NZ would it severely impact the Warriors (but any NZ team could do that)

What he actually said

V’landys said if the next expansion option was to be the Papua New Guinea-Pasifika bid, they would likely enter the competition in 2025.
“The Federal Government are very keen for us to look at the Papua New Guinea/Pasifika solution, where there would be a PNG team with all the Pacific nations,” V’landys told The Continuous Call team.

“We’ll certainly out of respect to the government look at that. And that would be 2025 if that was to occur.
“But there are plenty of other options.”

Beyond the option of a Pasifika side, V’landys said he was yet to decide when the next round of expansion will be.

We haven’t put a time on it. It could be in 2025 or it could be in 2027 when the broadcast contract comes up for renewal,” V’landys said.

“We’re going to look hard at the Dolphins situation to see what we have done right and what we have done wrong, and if there’s enough players to have that 18th team.

“We’re not rushing it, but we’re certainly looking at it.”

That does sound promising for proponents of that idea.

Maybe a 20 year contract with federal government with payment if they want out. Very exciting

Itd have to be, at least. how that stacks up if a different govt gets in next is where the risk is in that sort of agreement.

it’s so batsht crazy an idea I want it to happen lol
it won’t but it’d be fun to watch if it did.
