Eh? They went bust after a coup!e of years and we’re forced to close down and merge with hfc. If that’s your idea of success I’m glad you’re not running a club!
You wouldn’t even know who was running it

quick go and google it

Eh? We all laughed out loud for a long time when it happened. Travesty it meant Stanley had to play for hfc but the rest caused great mirth on the east of the city for many years to come.

but yeh Gateshead a stunning example of a succesful club lol

Richo was running it

he put his house behind the club

in typical English rugby league fashion they didn’t get any tv money or it was heavily reduced can’t remember which

they got pretty good crowds too for super league at the time

I know I was there lol. it failed badly in a very short space of time. They lasted one year for goodness sake! As for crowds, they were shocking! Lowest 1,500 highest 6k. Avg around 4k.
That’s your idea of a successful club??

Why you’d go to Gateshead and not Newcastle if you were starting a club in that part of England only Richo Kath hetherington and the geniuses behind SL could tell you.

So as not to compete with Newcastle United directly

and the club was quite successful

your lucky you had someone to cover the losses your club made for decades or you would be in the same spot they are

it’s so funny seeing your zeal for the nrl to expand yet when it comes to super league you’re just a typical insular English fan who likes his heartland clubs

Worse than Hunter Mariners? That's some going ( a An honorable mention to the Gateshead Thunder Sharks though as well)

Muga B could lol
For the record, i predicted this, and said that Cairns would be the base of a PNG club...
2ndly im in favour for any and all expansions, this one tho shouldn't have ties to the Pacifica, it should be strictly PNG/AUS, you rope in more islands, you end up causing more issues, the Aus govt shouldn't be paying for a fiji, tonga, somoa, cookIs side of things, the NRL can and might do, but we shouldn't, if they want better relationships with the PNG govt and a team is put in place to reflect that, then cool, but the pasifika angle should be based in NZ

Eh? As if they’d be competing with soccer. The equivalent idea would be setting up an nrl club in mandurah so it didn’t compete with the eagles lol.
By what measurement? Lasted ONE year, terrible crowds, went bust. How were they ”quite” successful? The team did ok on the field but the club was basket case from day1.

Well maybe if they got the same tv money as the heartland clubs they’d have survived

your donkey league has a history of not sharing tv monies with non heartlands teams doesn’t it

heck catalans had to pay the rfl a bond of 500k just to play in the challenge cup

go back and look at their crowds they were average for super league

stop being so insular

You did and if it happens you will be crowned internet king for the year.
I thought it was batsht crazy enough that it was just lip service by Vlandys but Abdo doubled down on it tonight on nrl360 so maybe they are actually seriously considering it lol

I also predicted Redcliffe to win the 17th bid too
West Coast Bears no.19, with a NZ2 as no.20

I think you’re getting yourself confused with SL gateshead thunder who received SL funding same as all 14 clubs and the newly formed Gateshead thunder who later joined the premiership and received no funding,

they really weren’t, despite a winning team they were pitiful.

haha you are the one who put this club up as an example of a successful club. You’re nuts.

Nope the super league club

I read the quotes from richo himself

he was talking about how dumb your game is regarding expansion

I can't get over how cooked the NRL is, if they think a half a team representing PNG, Samoa, Tonga, Guam and Noumea will work in Cairns.
Its hard to know if its just lip service to appease the govt after they have publicly gone on record in PNG or if they are seriously considering it! I suppose if they are looking at 2025 we will know soon enough!

I'm starting to think that they don't actually give a f**k about how successful the actual football business of new clubs is. All they seem to care about is the asset base of the owners and investors in the club. In other words, their first concern seems to be how long the people behind the club will be able to support it if things go wrong, not attempting to build the most successful football clubs possible.

The only reason they seem to be exploring these PNG/Pasifika ideas is because they seem to believe that it's possible that the government will underwrite them forevermore, which is stupid.
