I usually play in the APL (Australian Poker League) but recently have played a couple of cash games in the NPL (National Poker League).I find the APL tournaments are run better but the NPL have better cash prizes.

I've been a bit of a fan of it for a few years now and I play a bit on the net for free. The local club is just starting tournaments so I think I might give that a go.

If you call a raise and that's the last chips that go into the pot, you have the right to see their cards.

If you call them, they have to show them first. You only have to show if your hand wins the pot.

Love it.
Won $500 in a $5 buy-in two weeks ago, and a final table regular at my local.
And my GF is a dealer, so heads-up gets pretty competitive.

I play often on poker websites. I usually play on Betzip.com for free and fun.

As soon as you play properly once it gets pretty addicting.

Poker is considered a sport, this the reason it is telecast on Fox Sports and ESPN. I mean, darts is a sport is it not? They are all skill-based games.
Whether its a sport or a pastime doesn't affect any forum decisions. The criteria is simply whether or not enough people can fill such a forum with discussion.
Happy to call it a sport and a pastime.

No, poker is not gambling.
That's right. But it is a game which is frequented by gambling. In casual company, we've all played poker for money. Unfortunately that wouldn't be allowed on the forums.
But I'm sure plenty of people have as much enjoyment without the dollar factor being there.

The reason companies such as the NPL and APL are allowed to operate in pubs and clubs around Sydney is because it is considered a game of skill and doesn't come under gambling regulations.
Agreed, not arguing with that. If there is no money exchanging hands, then you can play as much poker as you like here.

As such, an entry fee cannot be charged by the venue itself (although an administration fee can).

Just so you know.
Thanks, That's food for thought. Although if we were to set up a comp here, there'd be no admin fee, it'd be free for all participants.

Btw, a very similar discussion took place amongst Mods just before the Punters forum was set up.

APL is pretty gay... I couldn't see the point of commiting to a tournament without the carrot of prizemoney at the end of the night.

I played a guy last night who was calling anything because he'd started well.

Tried to bluff him off a pot when two aces hit the table becasue I knew he didn't have one but he still called with a low pair when I had nothing.

Of course, it also meant that when I hit two pair later on he called my all-in and I doubled up :)

It's fun watching how people play
Never bluff a calling station, you should know that ;-) .

I have Poker stars and Party Poker. I got to about 60 mill on Party Poker so I play mini tourneys, sit and go's (free ones) at pokerstars now. Poker stars sit and gos are much better than party pokers.

That's pretty much on the money.

I'm playing in the NPL state final this Saturday - first prize is $15000!!

If anyone is interested in downloading party poker and playing cash games, give me a pm and I will give you a promotional code that will entitle you to $25US bonus once you have played enough hands.

I usually play the $1,$2 or $6 tournaments or $11 hd/hd tables.

In your 1st month you can play in freeroll tournaments and they also have a section for beginners,2-4c,5-10c,25c,$1-$2 rooms in both limit and no limit.

Got Party Poker and Pacific Poker. Does anyone play pot limit games? I found that I was making money playing limit but its just no fun compared to no limit whwre i've generally been losing money. I really don't care too much since I'd rather have fun than make an extra 50 dollars a week.
