If you truly support your team you never tip against them, ever.
An Eels fan would NEVER win a tipping comp using that philosophy.

If I think we'll lose then I'll tip against my team; which in 2018 was only 3 or 4 times actually.

As has been pointed out I have a sneaky suspicion that it has zero effect on the result.

I don't think Robbo is reading LU and saying to himself, "oh gee, that walking vagina Tommy Smith just backed against us, my confidence is now shot to pieces".

Tbh the attitude that you should never tip against your own team sounds like some sort of American style chest beating nonsense.

So you go into an lot of games thinking your team is going to lose?

Haha

But I actually think the Tigers will be the bolter Into the 8 this year. There’s always at least one and they’ve got a great pack of forwards now combined with a settled spine and backline - especially with the band back together aka Marshall and Farah.

My dark horses for this year

Newcastle are my dark horse for the finals this year, a top 8 spot is a genuine goal this year. Having Ponga/Pearce out last year is what derailed them. If they can stay on for the majority of the season they can take the team further. Klemmer and Ramien are great signings as well so now they’ve got some real power up front as well as the back.

This year is the first time for quite a long time that Newcastle can look to the new season with some optimism and I sincerely wish the Knights the best for this season. The way their supporters and community have stuck by them since Bennett left them in a smouldering wreck has been one of the real positives over the last few years and they deserve to have their hard work pay off.

Only injuries and/or complacency will stop the Roosters from going back to back. So much talent.

See Souths being a contender too.

Complacency is a big one.
2014 is a textbook example. We somehow got the minor premiership but in the finals we were just not on. Didn't want it enough, Souths did.
2015 we were right up there again, the hunger was back, and 3 senior players got injured in the final rounds.

A premiership requires a fair amount of luck, with injuries, player behaviour, rule changes/refereeing trends, random dramas all capable of derailing a campaign. The chances of being the best team on the field and having perfect luck off it 2 years in a row are too slim to be confident.

The lack of motivation is the biggest one for me. Sure, on the field they'll want to win just as much, however its all the 1%s that you do during the week that count. Everyone getting to training early and being switched on the whole time, looking after your body correctly during the week, getting enough sleep etc. When you read books about sportiing teams having big achievements the whole team collectivley is in the zone together and 100% committed to being the best they can be for the desired outcome. Its very difficult to get every person doing that year after year, especially the year after you've won it. Even a 5% drop in motivation/discipline from 2-3 players in the squad is enough for another team to overtake you.

And going close but bombing out of the finals earlier than hoped is as good a motivation as you can get. Broncos, Souths, Panthers will up the intensity this year and have the squads and coaches to win it.
Storm, Sharks, Dragons, Warriors will try to of course but I don't think they're going up the ladder this year.
I expect to see Knights Tigers Raiders in the mix but they're a year or two off a serious challenge, if things go well.

This and you beat me to it.

There is no doubt in my mind we win in 2015 if not for those injuries at such a late stage although I am sure Cowboys fans will disagree. There is an argument to be made that that side is our best in the NRL era surpassing 2013, they had an even better defensive record than 2013 albeit with less shutouts. I don't think we are dependant on certain players as other sides are but 2 or 3 key long term injuries will derail our season like any other side.

Then there is the complacency thing and the not wanting it quite as much the following year. I do think that this no back to back winners since 93 thing has snowballed and there is more and more motivation to be the next team do and we have the squad to give it a shake but things are just never the same the following year and it is just extremely hard being the hunted week in and week out.

Do you actually tip the Roosters every week?
You are aware that your betting and tipping doesn't actually influence their on field success right?
When we have a good side then yes I tip them every week, I also think they'll win the premiership in 2019. Tell me when do you think we'll win the comp again? You've written off 2018 and 19. You don't think we'll win this year with the best roster in the comp, your assessment is confusing to say the least.

I think we are deserved favourites. Ie. we have the best chance of winning.
But the favourite doesn't always win, the best team on paper doesn't always win, the best horse doesn't always win, and some merkin wins the lotto of few weeks even though the odds are miniscule.
Since there's no money riding on internet predictions, I feel like making more interesting tips than whoever has the best roster
