I stand corrected.

However if a couple of trusted friends who were A.F.L. fanatics (one who has a famous former West Coast Eagle player as a cousin) told you that A.F.L. players have to obey a total abstinance of alcohol during the season as part of their code of conduct... what would you believe?

Unless you cross-check your friend's references?

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't having a dig at you.

I was just saying that I have first hand evidence that at least one AFL club don't subscribe to the theory of prohibition.

my non footy loving friends suggested we lock them up in cages and only let them out at game time. similar to the treatment of animals in the circus. hey, its one possible solution

the fact of the matter is we shouldnt HAVE to be figuring out ways to control players so they dont break the law. it's utterly ridiculous. they are professional footballers for godsakes, they need to realise that and stop behaving like a rabid pack of horny dogs. its embarassing and humilating for every NRL fan in my opinion.

Fair enough.

No hard feelings.

Maybe it's just a few AFL clubs then. And one of them would HAVE to be the West Coast Eagles, because as I've said, one of these mates that I've mentioned is a cousin of a very famous former West Coast player. I'd trust his word as much as I'd trust my own Mother's words.

The NRL must consider a blanket alcohol ban on every player contracted to its clubs.

Draconian.

You bet.

But what more can be done?

You can commission studies, run work shops, appoint mentors but none of it can stop the effects of binge drinking.

Remove alcohol, remove most of the problems.

I've actually just written a rant about this in my blog. In short, bans don't work.

I can't confirm this, but this is what I've been told by friends who are A.F.L. fans.

I can tell you this isn't true....

living in Adelaide it is rare to be out on a Saturday night during AFL season and not see at least a handful of players from the local sides or any interstate sides not having a few.

I think the Knights have done the right thing by coming down hard on it this time round...basically the players need to realise they are ambassadors 24/7 for the game and their clubs...one of them cuts someone off in traffic, it can become negative publicity. The NRL is a product in a very lucrative market, sadly the game has become a business and perhaps the product (in this case the players) need to be bought up to speed on that.

Alcohol bans won't work, but harsh penalties may have some deterrent

Just read your article and I agree with you.

Drinking in moderation would be a far better solution to the problem, but how do we change the habits of a lifetime?

Binge drinking in Rugby League is and has always been excused as "Bonding" and whilst there are public cries that this no longer occurs the evidence would suggest otherwise.

A stand has to be taken now and it will take a generation before this kind of behaviour is erradictaed form our game.
