Terrible? Thor was pretty crap but the other 2 were pretty good imo

Ghost Rider. Now THERE is a movie Marvel never should have made

I can say Captain America was the most painful comic book movie experience I've ever had to sit through. At least ghost rider was laughably bad it was entertaining, Captain America was painfully slow and boring, not to mention arrogant (but I guess that's what captain america is about). Iron Man 2 was a steaming pile of ... Didn't even come remotely close to the first one.

It's riding off the wave of iron man's popularity, but even that is a fundamentally weak series now. I'm sure it'll have some entertaining action sequences, but if the writers of the included movies are involved, storyline wise it doesn't have much hope.

Prometheus and Dark Knight rises are my big two for the year.

New trailer looks f**king amazing!

"Cut it off! Cut it off!"

Sounds like some face hugger action...

Seriously, is there a single movie coming out this year that isn't a prequel, sequal or re-imagining of a story that's already been told 1000 times?

Don't get me wrong, very much looking forward to dark knight rises as they are really the first batman series to do the comics justice, but Jesus Christ can somebody come up with an original f**king thought in Hollywood anymore?

Not really no. There are some but most are awful, few original screenplays turn out good these days.

The best ideas are usually in books, so they just adapt them. To be honest it's usually more enjoyable than the formulaic releases hollywood originals often turn out to be.

There are plenty of great movies that weren't an adaptation of a book, comic book or these days f**king board game from the 80s.

Studios are just too f**king lazy and/or scared to actually take a punt on something new.

Prometheus is probably my most anticipated. I'm a huge fan of the original Alien (and Aliens) and love this kind of dark sci-fi horror. Pitifully few examples of the genre out there. I struggle to think of any beyond Sunshine, Moon, and Event Horizon.

Open to suggestions.

That's not to say I am not beyond excited for The Hobbit, The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, Hunger Games, and World War z.

Did you not see Ang Lee's snorefest Hulk, Ghost Rider, or Daredevil!?

Hell, even X-Men 3 was f**king dire. At least Captain America had some heart.

Aliens prequel directed by Ridley but on a epic scale, this is the one to get excited about.

The fact that its the same director returning is what has sold me.

You wouldn't sh!t on your own masterpiece would you?

*cough*George Lucas*cough*

George Lucas never had a masterpiece to begin with. The original star wars movies are the perfect example of how horrible story telling can still be a successful movie franchise.

The mythology behind it is admittedly interesting, but Lucas has always been terrible at coming up with good dialog and directing it as such. Without being the special effect masterpieces they were at the time, I highly doubt they'd be remembered as fondly without it. It's full of wooden, poorly fleshed out characters.

Ridley Scott is a much better storyteller than Lucas.

Yeah well he wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark and then that crystal skull abortion. So the point stands.

I liked Sunshine, was pretty interesting.

Should I be seeing the hunger games? I passed it aside as another twilight, a teenage girls novel that I woudn't be interested in, but its getting good reviews, and a few guys I know went and saw it.

Lovin the movies this year though, seeing the avengers at la premiere, and the hobbit on my birthday (boxsing day) as I did for all the lord of the rings!

The Hunger Games was an entertaining movie there were just too many parts I couldn't suspend my disbelief for.

Also I think something with a subject matter like that should be darker and marketed towards adults, it's not really something for young kids. You shouldn't be cheering on kids to kill other kids.

He wrote the STORY for both and while I agree that Crystal Skull was rubbish the thing that made Raiders so good was the screenplay which Lawrance Kasdan wrote. He is also responsible for the screenplay for The EMpire Strikes Back which as we all know is the best Star Wars movie.

Lucas might have had the IDEAS but the words coming out of the actor's mouths is the work of people who write dialogue better than Lucas can!

Can't think of too many times during the movie or reading the books where a situation was really painted where I was cheering on kids to kill other kids.

If anything the entire thing is portrayed as horrendously barbaric and indeed most of the kills are shown to be quite disturbing rather than moments of victory.

I haven't read the books but I can imagine they are more morally ambiguous than the film.

In the film there is a clear hero and villain. There have been reviews, including ones in the movies thread, that have said viewers hates Kato and wanted him dead. The film was pretty much structured for the viewer to cheer for Katniss. There were only a few times where the total barbaric situation was really fleshed out, once when Woody looked at the kids pretending they were fighting and when District 11 rioted (which left me wondering why they didn't all do that before).

The kills are shown to be disturbing but it's clear the viewer is meant to be more saddened by Katniss's situation and Rue's death than by any of the others. For example some of the kids were complete bloodthirsty killers. They were laughing and mocking their victims. I would have rathered a film where every child is hesitant to kill which is what I would imagine in that situation. But instead we have children who enjoy killing and that leaves viewers cheering against them.

I think it would have been a lot more disturbing for Katniss to have to kill children like Rue and Peter. A lot darker too. I don't know what it's like in the books though. It was clear you were meant to cheer for Katniss in the film and it would have been better with a more morally ambiguous story.

Plus I couldn't help but enjoy the parade style and the tv host. In a film like this I wanted to be disgusted by it all, which I think adults might have been but I doubt kids would have been. I just found it hard to believe so many of the children would be bloodthirsty psychopaths. It turned the games into a good vs evil tale when it should have been a complete morally dark story aimed at adults. The good vs evil part should be the districts taking down the heads of the lady gaga society which I imagine happens in the later books.

I suppose its tough for me to know how to interpret just the movie, having read the books before seeing it so it is far too easy to flesh out the parts they sort of gloss over in the movie with the background the book gives you.

In the books Katniss is indeed still written as the one you want to win, although she is a much darker character. The build up of her home life, the oppression of the capital and the barbaric nature of the games is much more apparent in the book, thats for sure.

Really I would recommend reading the book series before seeing the rest of the movies. IMO they are really made with an expectation that you've read the books and thus know what they are talking about without having to explain it in too much detail
