We're a top 8 side. Without Inglis, Te'o and McQueen, they're still a quality side and I'll give credit where credit is due; they were deadly every time they were at our end of the field. We played like a team that will be there come September and we have a side more than capable of causing upsets in the finals series. But with that said, there is a 20 minute period where the game is a stalemate and when a team cracks, it's us and that showed when George Burgess scored.

However, I can't ignore the pathetic joke that was the refereeing. Three tries came off the back of pathetic penalties that shouldn't have been given and a lot more than led to immense pressure being placed on us.

As for our players:

Smith showed what we've missed, intensity. Mason carried us for the last few weeks but he couldn't do it alone. Smith certainly added to it and we still have Scott to come back who is exactly the same. Furthermore, I loved how he revved the boys up after every try we scored. We hit back each time and looked dangerous.

Mullen's kicking game was excellent. His 40/20 was pivotal and it's a shame he missed his second attempt. He kicked to the corners and forced their wingers and Merritt to run in and couldn't make the meters Inglis does. Again with the refereeing, Matellato was blocked so often, Mullen's 5th tackle options were wasted. More should have gone to McManus where he was far more capable of out-jumping Everingham.

Speaking of our wingers, both were excellent. Matellato had a phenomenal debut. Three amazing kicks, a perfect try and he done well in defence and attack. He still has a lot to learn, but that's understandable considering the jump between NSW Cup and the NRL. I expect a lot more from him and it shows we no longer need to rush back Uate. But I do agree with Zoidberg, Aku's returns would have been beyond lethal tonight. McManus was again, consistent. I have no idea what to even rate as good considering "good" is consistent for him  Another try and another game to show how disgraceful it is he's being overlooked for Origin while all the attention goes to Merritt.

Like last week, this was a game that we can't take much negativity away from. The refereeing joke was a disgrace but the boys pulled through. Matellato shows he has an incredible amount of potential, Bedsy will do wonders for the team considering how shit Waddle is and we've got a team that will do wonders come September despite what people say.

We should really wipe Hunter Stadium with the blood of Saints next week.

Kev has been excellent in 1st grade every time he's been given a go, Aku is a better overall player but he's not 5 times better.......
Yeah, that's certainly true. Not much can be done at this stage, although I'd like to hope that Aku's best football is still ahead of him. Of course, it's possible that it isn't. Aku needs his confidence back that saw him score some of the more awesome tries I've seen in a Knights jumper. He needs the confidence to back himself to beat a guy with pace again. I think he needs to be fitter and leaner to get that back.

Thought the team played exceptional well for a makeshift team. The penalties were the difference, both teams at times were horrid. Mason had one of his dropsy games, Mullen kicking second half not too good. I thought we put some good hard hits in. I sometimes think our rotation gets messed up. Hope McKinnon is OK or we are already in deep water. Souths really know how to milk penalties, Ref's bloody pan to the crowd. Well done. Someone please slam Sam & George the most irritating blokes in the comp.

There's not one thing I like about Waddell. Not one.

What is with the pause from Waddell on every single f**king play the ball? It's like he can't pass the ball without pumping back an absurd amount after he's picked it up. It's infuriating and serves no purpose.

 I've been saying this for weeks, haha.

How could you possibly be offside against our team when Waddle takes forever to pass the ball. His dumb pause is costing us so many metres, the defence is always in our f**king face and it has nothing to do with them being offside.

It's like our side of the field pauses in spacetime for what seems like an age every f**king time he touches it.

It seems the way that we rate our players is that they're only as good as their last game.

What are we going to say when we have our top side on the park and were still getting pumped?

There was some soft tackles on our line by some of the older players (Smith and Faalongo) when the pressure was on.

Not that it cost us the game tonight but we need a dominate half if we are going to move up the ladder.

Can anyone see Sh#tchell Pearce kicking that 45m field goal for the Blues on Wednesday night?

It's not only Bedsy's passing from dummy half that we miss, it's his defence close to the ruck.

Is it just me or did that ball go backwards from leilua? :?

I said exactly the same thing at the time. These days though, anything that comes loose accidentally is deemed as a "knock-on"

Disappointed with the loss but not as much as previous weeks against teams who we should have beaten. I thought Snowy and Mason were the best of the forwards, and especially in the first 20 mins we were bending the line and making tons of metres which was awesome to see.

Discipline cost us and unfortunately we see it every week. Yes, some of the decisions were a bit odd and definitely "home crowd" penalties, but that is one area of our game we need to work on.

I agree with all the comments re: Waddell. He is a good "stop-gap" but we need someone permanent. Why we let De Gois go I will never know.

All-in-all, happy with the way we competed but we need to play for 80mins and be more disciplined.

Agreed ill discipline cost us. Lop sided penalty count. Could've won tonight. Will need to adress that by next week when we play the Steelers

Just soooooooooooo frustrating that we keep losing in the same manner. We have surrendered leads in our last 4 matches (8-0 vs Sharks, 14-0 vs Raiders, leading last week vs Warriors and 12-0 vs Souffs). Like the Sharks and Raiders matches, I really thought we were in with a good chance of racking up a big score tonight when we got out to 12-0. Doesn't help us that the referee who adjudicated us in defense blew 7 penalties against us in the first half, which got Souffs back in the contest (they scored both their first half tries off the back of penalties).

I really hope we aren't talking about these losses after Rd 26 for all the wrong reasons (e.g. if we narrowly miss the finals):(

I don't think it's ill discipline, refs are looking for penalties against us and it then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, we get a high penalty count against us, the refs review the game, pat themselves on the back for a job well done and then next time they are looking for penalties as "Newcastle is a ill disciplined team".

It's bullshit, some teams such as Souths tonight are getting massive leg ups against us, 7 to 1 in the first half, so Souths played a perfect half of footy, it's a joke and we are being played big time.

And seriously, the injury levels are reaching joke proportions yet again, we are the unluckiest team in the comp, we haven't had a decent run for a decade.

I reckon we looked like a top team that just dropped off their game today. Tended to drop off when things didn't go our way but were far from going emo or into a shell.
Today was a great basis to build on. We had good intensity at times.
Am not disappointed with the result for now.

I think Smith was the reason why we remained in the game until the end. He kept the boy's heads up and motivated them constantly. Really stood up and lead the side. I thought Mullen done well as captain however, I think he needs to be a bit of "into" the refs. Most captains get their point across regardless of the situation where I think Mullo did that once. The rest of the time he just asked why the penalty was given and didn't argue it.

"Milking, Chris. Milking."

That is what you heard from the ref nearly every time that Houston got tackled. Didn't matter how long the tacklers held him down for, if there was a second effort from them while getting to his feet.

"Milking, Chris. Milking."

Getting a back frustrated watching Mullen constantly turning the ball back inside to Rochow in the backline movements. It worked once a few games back.
Give Dane some ball hey Mullo!
