Interesting news out of Sporting News, what does everyone think of this?

George Burgess considering early retirement months after rejecting monster Eels deal

South Sydney prop George Burgess may prematurely draw the curtain on his eight-year NRL career as the ferocious nature of rugby league catches up to his body.

The whispers have surfaced just months after the English forward rejected millions of dollars to join Parramatta before the season on a monster dollar deal that would have set him up for life.

Instead, Burgess put emotion before money in knocking back the biggest pay day of his career, declaring he couldn't have lived with himself if he walked out on South Sydney.

''To leave a club that I've played all my first grade games - at the drop of a hat - just didn't feel right to me,'' he said.

"I want to be able to play the season out knowing that if I am leaving that I can properly say goodbye to the club that has given a lot to me and I've given a lot to.

"For me as a person, that's the way I want it to happen - if it's going to happen."

That perhaps was the first hint right there that Burgess doubted whether he could make it though the year: ''If it's going to happen.''

The Australian journalist and Sporting News contributor Brent Read has revealed the Eels are no longer interested in his services and his recent lack of game time has raised concerns.

Burgess has been limited at training, and on occasions has sat out entire sessions, nursing a dodgy hip as his minutes have sunk to just 24 per game.

''He knocked back that huge offer from Parramatta a few months ago and Wayne Bennett wanted to keep him. Parramatta have now dropped out of the George Burgess race and distanced themselves,'' Read told Sporting News.

''He's playing 24 minutes a week for the past three rounds and he's really struggling. There are whispers doing the rounds that maybe he might be ready to pull the pin.

''He's 28 and his body is letting him down a bit. He's got the acting career to fall back on.

''Physically in the last year he's struggled and has had some injuries. He just hasn't been the same player.

''I remember when they won that grand final and he scored that try and he was a superstar, but we just haven't seen that again. The last three weeks he just hasn't looked right.

''It was a big decision not to take the Eels deal and I know there were a few people at Souths that were encouraging him to take that deal and he may live to regret that.

''This could be his Blake Austin moment. Blake Austin rejected that massive deal from Canberra and was forced to go to the Super League - that's where George Burgess is right now.''

Burgess, a Bradford junior, is mulling a Super League move, but he also has a genuine interest in pursuing an acting career.

Brisbane keen on Cody according to the Courier Mail.
I have my doubts about it's legitimacy but with 18 months to run on his contract, the sooner we get him done the better. Especially if we do get GI money to spend.

That million sure has to go along way, upgrading lowe, tatola, knight, buy a centre, and god knows who else needs upgrading as well as buy a second rower to replace sutto, eg pengai, i get the feeling the steeds are trying to stop us plundering them by trying to cause us salary cap stress

To me this makes no sense. Milford and Cody are the exact same players. That club is being run by mad men. They should really be targeting a Reynolds/Townsend type player.

So many rumours.

Most of them made up in online forums. I lol'd at the Cody one.

On the verge of SOO selection and killing it at 7-1 at Souths. Why would he even consider the Drongos?

Completely agree and like the Roberts/TPJ/Lodge to Souths rumours, linking a player to a former coach is a lazy link.

Brisbane Broncos confirm they are going after Rabbitoh Cody Walker
Peter Badel, Exclusive, The Courier-Mail

Brisbane have South Sydney sensation Cody Walker on their radar as the Broncos search for the playmaking formula to break the club’s 13-year premiership drought.

The Sunday Mail can reveal the Broncos have expressed interest in Walker, the Rabbitohs five-eighth maestro who will look to continue his rampaging form against the Cowboys in Sunday’s final Magic Round clash at Suncorp Stadium.

The Broncos are hoping Suncorp will be Walker’s home on a permanent basis, with the club formulating plans to secure the playmaker they almost poached from Souths in 2016.

The Broncos are one of seven clubs to have contacted Walker’s management. The NSW Origin hopeful is contracted to Souths until the end of 2020, meaning he can begin formal discussions with rival clubs from November 1 this year.

Brisbane secured the services of hooker James Segeyaro on a cut-price deal on Friday, but the Broncos are looking at a long-term strategy to win titles and Walker has been identified as a key target.

The Broncos made preliminary inquiries a fortnight ago, before Walker’s two-try haul which helped sink Brisbane 38-6 at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium last Friday week.

While Walker is happy at Redfern, the 29-year-old is approaching the most important contract of his career and wants to explore all options before any decision to ink a fresh extension at South Sydney.

Walker’s agent Matt Rose yesterday confirmed a raft of NRL clubs are lining up to poach the in-form pivot.

“To get so many inquiries shows the level Cody has reached as a player and his growing stature in the game,” Rose said.

“I’ve had a stack of clubs call me to express their interest in Cody and gauge what his intentions are.

“The clubs are asking if Cody plans to be at Souths long-term and their desire to have talks.

“There’s nothing I can do right now so we will wait until November to have formal talks.

“The challenge for Cody is to maintain his form. He is determined to have a huge year for Souths and he wants to win a premiership – that is his focus right now.

“Cody is contracted to Souths for another 18 months so they have time on their side to try to keep Cody.

“By November, we will know his market value and we’ll see what happens.”

Walker is currently on around $600,000 at Souths, but such is his blistering form, the 79-game NRL wizard could earn in excess of $900,000 annually on the open market.

The Broncos see promise in their current halves, 18-year-old Tom Dearden and $1 million five-eighth Anthony Milford, who is off-contract at the end of 2021.

But with Broncos skipper Darius Boyd turning 32 in July, the classy Walker would be a handy addition to Brisbane’s playmaking spine.

The Broncos have a history with Walker. Three years ago, he was poised to ink a three-year deal with the Broncos after meeting with Wayne Bennett, only to change his mind at the last minute.

Ironically, Bennett is now at Souths and will fight tooth-and-nail to keep Walker.

“I was pretty close to going to the Broncos actually,” Walker told The Sunday Mail.

“I remember going over to (former coach) Michael Maguire’s house to say, ‘Sorry mate, I’m taking up an offer from Brisbane’.

“But the next day Souths came back with a revised offer. They offered me an extra year and that gave me some security.

“I was a bit nervous meeting Wayne. He is such a powerful figure in our game, so it was quite daunting to sit down in front of him. But once we settled in, I found him to be a funny guy and he was easier to talk to than I thought.

“The first day he came to Souths, he had a joke with me. He said you wouldn’t bloody come to Brisbane, so I had to sign with Souths to coach you.

“I’m just enjoying playing football at the moment. I’m signed here until 2020 and I’m leaving the rest to my manager. Right now, I’m happy at Souths.”

.
Rose scoffed at suggestions Walker, a late-bloomer who made his NRL debut at 26, is reaching his twilight years.

“Cody turns 30 next year but he is the type of guy who can play another five years into his mid-30s like Cooper Cronk and Cam Smith,” Rose said.

“Cody is still getting better as a player.

“Souths haven’t spoken to me at this stage (about a new deal) but they have a lot going on with Greg Inglis’ retirement and knowing exactly how much salary-cap space they have.”

In regards to the Cody situation, the Broncos can piss off!!! I really hope that Cody is happy here, he's playing great footy in a strong team and he seems to be loving life. I have no doubt he will get a fairly large contract upgrade too, he deserves it!

This is the problem when you have nuffies like Cleary, Taylor and milford on a million dollars.

Players better than them will demand more.

And all of those guys secured those big contracts based purely on potential. They made big waves in the NRL in their first season or two and the clubs who signed them thought they would only get better and better.

In the scheme of things, all of them are still kids and will still improve but I agree that they have probably all been well overpaid for what they deliver.

And further to that, I've never understood the hype around Cleary. Sure, he's a solid player and he could be Cronk like one day but he's probably earning double what an Adam Reynolds or a Chad Townsend is getting and I think both of those players are consistently winning games for their team.
