Ramifications of the Kalyn Ponga deal

Right

So you have a conspiracy theory with nothing to back it up

There is no way we can match the Knights deal

To be frank if there is anyone feeding the courier mail (a Brisbane paper) shit about this it would be the Broncos. If he backs out of the Knights I'd imagine the Broncos would b favourites to sign him.

Look, now I've gone and accused the Broncos of leaking stories to the courier mail

Did someone from Brisbane f**k your missus or something?

I think we offered him around 400 k a year

When JT and Scott retire Wecould always spend the 1 600 000 of salary cap I'd say They are on between them to recruit other players perhaps

As for ponga good luck to him. You can't blame an 18 yo taking that kind of cash. If he stayed with us I couldn't see him cracking first grade regularly next year

But Kalyn Ponga is contracted to the Cowboys next year though, his deal with the Knights starts in 2018. So the question is not whether he would have got regular playing time in first grade next year with the Cowboys, it's whether he would played regular first grade for the Cowboys in 2018.

Typically they are horrendous. It's not a good omen. Hopefully the kid has higher ambitions than earning a lot of money.

Yeah its typically been a disaster
If Ponga delivers on his talent, you'll have a potential superstar at market or maybe even a touch below market. the sword cuts both ways. If he has a bad injury/injuries that robs his of his natural gifts ala Campese, or he another Alex Johnson who winds up being a decent winger in a gun team, rather than a foundation spine piece, the Brown era and probably the next 5-7 years of Knights football are completely f**ked

that said, you cant blame the knights. What other options did they have? Their current method of roster building was absolute NOT going to produce anything other than mediocre football. I have some concerns about the fact they are banking heavily on guys like Lamb and Levi at other key positions and even if Ponga is outstanding, it might not matter at all if those guys arent any good, but the knights simply HAD to swing for the fences here, because there was no other way out of their situation

Meh..... I don't see what the big deal is...

Bad teams will overpay to acquire top talent.

And usually because top talent in the prime of their careers aren't too willing to go to bad teams the club's have to think of other ways to attract these types of players...

And usually that means they are forced to either throw obscene amounts of money at players on the downward curve of their careers in the hope that they can still perform at a high level as well as provide intangibles like leadership etc...

Or they throw the cash at young players unproven but with a high amount of potential in the hope that they catch them on the upward curve towards their prime.

So either way the good clubs struggle to compete with the bad clubs because the good clubs just can't justify spending that type of money on either an unproven kid or a player past their prime when they have other areas of need.

You see it in all sports...

In the NFL last offseason I saw the Texans pay an unproven QB a 4yr $72M contract.

Or in the NBA the Miami Heat paid Tyler Johnson a 4yr $50M deal... there were actual NBA journalists who said... "Tyler Who??"

supply creates demand...

I think this deal is more exceptional then we have seen in the NRL before though. The attitude of 'meh' really doesn't cut the mustard for me. Also the lame suggestions from other posters that I'm Queenslander that I'm somehow bitter or disappointed he is leaving the Cowboys. For me personally I really don't care either way, all I'm saying that the Knights gamble is one of the most fantastical we have seen in the NRL.

And the comparisons with Anthony Milford or Jason Taumalolo hardly compare with this signing considering he has only played two games of first grade NRL football. Or the suggestions that the Knights are throwing 'overs' are not valid either considering some teams who have paid 'overs' are getting someone who has been proven as in the case when the Dragons this off-season signed Paul Vaughan for more then what you would call market value.

It's unprecedented in the NRL, and the fact your using examples from other codes is proof of that.

This talk of the other Knights players not liking this signing is f**king nonsense. Im sure they are well aware that the team sucks and this is the right move
Exactly.

They won ONE game last year.

The Knights 'stars' should count themselves lucky that they earn as much as they do.

Gagai for one is grossly overpaid. Average player.

Who knows to be honest

It's all conjecture now really

Can't help but think Ponga and Radradra on the wings at Brisbane would make them genuine premiership contenders

I used those examples as it shows that while to the NRL this maybe unprecedented...

If you were to look at professional sports as a whole you will see that this is nothing new...

you have to understand that for a long, long time the game was handcuffed financially by the fact a media company owned half of it... because of this in a lot of aspects it has been behind the times as far as trends in the player market is concerned.

So now that it's taken full control of itself and the money coming in has exploded they will start to catch up to the other sports organisations with these types of philosophies to free agency and roster building.

So don't be alarmed by the fact you haven't seen it in the NRL.

Ah, aint life grand :)

Kicking back enjoying the buthurt on display for the cows through the Courier Mail.

3 articles now all hyper critical of the signing. 10 day cooling off period is running out boys, better get some more articles out there whilst the kid can still change his mind.

Last article said:

Ponga is going to get smashed week in week out.
Ponga is going to be disliked by the other knights players.
NRL officials are going to be hated by every other team for allowing this to happen.
Cowboys have been treated unfairly by the NRL, they won't be able to fill their new stadium without Ponga.
NRL favoritism as it is NRL money they are spending to buy Ponga. (Don't all clubs get salary cap grant from NRL)
And some other rambling nonsense.

Looking forward to tomorrow's piece Mike Colman.

Haha. Knights fans are weird
I don't think I've ever seen less butthurt surrounding a young star moving clubs but it's all they can talk about... very odd indeed haha

It's like they can't handle "winning" something.

They have made one of the biggest player signings in their history, and instead of celebrating it's "woe is me", "Everyone hates us".

They would rather be lovable losers than actually successful.

You realise the courier mail isn't an NQ newspaper right ?

We have our own papers in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.

It's like me blaming the Knights for articles about the Cowboys written in the Sydney papers not the Newcastle one.

A singing like this is far from unprecedented. A lot of young players are paid huge dollars before they are proven. Thurston was lured to the Cowboys on a contract comparable to the rep halves of the time when he was a regular for the bulldogs reserve grade.
Souths just signed Anthony Cherrington. I looked up his history. He made his debut in 2008 for the roosters, showed promised so they signed him to something like a 300k a year deal. Huge money in 2008 for a rookie forward with a handful of first grade games. Come 2016 and cherrington has played a total of 19 games.
It's a gamble but what else can the Knights do. It's either take a punt on a highly talented kid, or keep spending that 600k on the likes of Hodkinson and buhrer.

lol, it's because we're being attacked in the media. We're not even used to getting a mention in the paper, let alone attacked. Been that long since we did anything relevant. Personally, I take the attacks in the media as a good sign... It'll be a much better sign once the cooling off period is over. Clearly some feathers have been ruffled up north, and that's only a positive thing for mine.

Did Jamie Buhrer sign with Newcastle for 600K?

The most upsetting part of all the media attention is that Dane Gagai is continually referred to as 'an origin star, and 'in demand'.

Please Brisbane, take him off our hands. I'm sure he'd go for half of what he's on atm, as is the done thing up north.

Yeah sorry I won't be waiting til Milford levels of butthurt are reached to comment on young signings. If that was the bar I wouldn't be able to comment on how great it is Tedesco backflipped on you guys. Would have been a nice premiership this year...enjoy Wighton.

As for Canard...I have no problem with you, you actually seem like a decent bloke. But I am reluctant to celebrate this signing til the ink dries after 10 days. The continued slagging from the CM is a joke and the Cowboys have handled this like schoolgirls.

Fair enough.

From now on any article about the Cowboys in the Daily Tele can be attributed to the Knights I assume also.
