He has some interesting insight on the World Cup final. You'll appreciate it.
Just give me the gist.

It's not about who was on the side, but who wasn't.

Who are the two players we're talking about here Lag?

He wanted both.

New Kangaroos who all had fair claims.
2 players? You've been hanging with Loudy too long. 8 players I listed and when you throw in Bowen & Gallen it becomes 10. I doubt it ends there.

The 2 players - the only defs missing were Locky and Thurston. The rest of the team was up for grabs or played. Your listed players included those heading to England and B Tate ffs! People get injured. You still select the next best replacement! Why was Slater not selected? He hadn't played for the test team yet. Good time to blood a rookie, is it not? You're clutching. Gallen had NOT EVEN PLAYED for Australia yet. Bowen had not played since 2004 and been dead set dropped from origin with only one bench appearance that year in origin! FFS Pete.

Lockyer takes the blame for the loss.

And that's your deal, not mine. All I was showing was that this wasn't the strongest side & that players like Stewart got their opportunity to show what they've got while the others were unavailable.

Gallen was originally named in the squad, I thought I had mentioned that.

Bowen was the Dally M fullback & forced his way into the Qld side. For my money, he was the best fullback in the game that year and didn't have the luxuries Stewart, Slater or McKinnon enjoyed. NQld were bare bones away from the Bowen-JT combo.

He probably wouldn't have qualified for Sticky's side but the injury well and truly took him out of the picture.

Yet funnily enough, Bowen has never been back in the rep picture. It doesn't matter how well he does at club.

And Stewart was still selected over Slater.

Far more interesting to me - you're right :p - what particularly does Locky blame himself for?

It's a testament to Bowen he's still playing the way he is at club. Doesn't have anything to offer to rep. anymore but he's still got a few tricks up his sleeve. A shame that he suffered that serious knee injury straight after his ' 07, personally I thought his 07 was better than Slater's 08.

Yes, Stewart the incumbent Origin player was preferred over the non-incumbent Slater.

Bombing a try that would have made it 16-0. Otherwise he's a diplomat and reckons there's a lot of what ifs.

Pffft. He was more the reason for their loss than bombing a try. He had a shocker defensively. An absolute shocker. And still got MOTM. Sick joke was played that night awarding player of the tournament to Slater and MOTM to Lockyer.

OK Pete, so to recap - Billy Slater sh*ts on Brett Stewart because he was the only player of first grade standard picked for the Aus v Kiwi tests of 07 and 08 because he was he only player any club let play. He outplayed him in the 08 gf by setting up 8 tries for Manly - thats how god he is - he even helps the opposition!. Lockyer admits it was him, and not Slater, who threw the hail mary to Benji in the WCF. We know this because Brett Hodgeson was NSW fullback.

Pete, ffs lay off the pills.

That video posted of Darren Lockyer's "poor" defence, you can clearly see him calling 3 times for players to slide his way. No one came, Locky moved up quickly to plug the gap inside him, he got side stepped, and the inside defence didn't move across, resulting in a try.

I'm not going to sit here and defend Darren Lockyer's defensive game, because he was patchy defensively his whole career. That video was as much his team mates fault on the inside close to the ruck, as it was Darrens'.

The whole Slater v Stewart debate is a little bit silly. Stewart fell off the radar about the same time Slater came on. Stewart had sexual assault charges laid against him for allegedly touching up a 17 year old girl while he had a skin full of piss. He was later found not guilty, but that whole saga really ended his run. Following that was the unjuries if I'm not mistaken. In the meantime, Billy Slater came along and people forgot all about Brett Stewart.

The thread is about current fullbacks, but if we're going with all time fullbacks, it's hard to go pas Lockyer's natural skill in the position. Early in his career he was very quick, ran a good line, and his ball playing and vision was sublime. The few games he played with Langer/Walters in the QLD side were something special.

I think after this year people will be saying that defence is a great feature of Ben Barba's game
He is also now fairly safe under the high ball
Phenomenal in attack

Errr it was 3.20 minutes of lol. From the wasted grubber, to the missed tackle on the person returnring it. TO more missed tackles and giving up a penalty for trying to takcle in no man's land. Watch the vid again....

He almost single handedly let the kiwis go 100 metres and then score.

And so we completely disregard a players entire career over a few mistakes in a game? Come on mate. What about Brad Fittler f**king up the tackle on Mark Coyne for the QLD miracle try in '94? Shall we write his career off for this?

Fittler WTF?! Ran 60 metres back and stayed on Coyne instead of comming into Mal and put his man to ground who just crossed the line. Jack would have been proud of that effort. Freddy's not even a fullback. I see nothing wrong with Fittler's defensive efforts there on a very slippery customer. You compare that incident to that 3.20 of lol?

Freddy was a champ!

Lockyer was a champ fullback.

What you got a quote of media savvy Fittler saying Locky was a better five/8th than him?

Yes, I would. Did you not watching the roosters 2000-04? Did you miss him at pivot in Aus tests?

No. I thought Fittler was an excellent 5/8, but a better lock. Lockyers' ability to make a game his own and win a game single handedly is what made him stand out to me. Anyway, this is a redundant argument because both players were fantastic in their time.

Fittler > Heather. Watch Freddy's first test series as skipper. Sublime. Tougher than Lockyer too.

Heather's strength was peripheral vision. A lovely runner, could pass either way, good kicking game. He never had Fittler's step, or Fittlers strength. He could never pass as far as Fittler.

Both were better than Lamb imho - who simply kept backing up, but relied too much on the dirty stuff. Besides, the fogotten man of Lab's club success was Steve Mortimer - the attacking genius of that club in that era.

Wally was better than Fittler, because of his strength. Kenny was the best of the lot - depending on how you class a kicking game (He didnt need one because Sterlo had the best one of all). Kenny's defence was great. He was tough, could evade defence and break tackles better than anyone. Greatest ever pivot at two clubs.

Typical. You dismiss Lamb by saying Mortimer, ignoring the late end of 1988-95. And not a single mention of Sterlo when you discuss Kenny bar kicking. Parra v Dogs 80's seems alive n well with you Loudy. Where was Mortimer in 91,92,93 or 95?

How did Kenny go without Sterling as compared Lamb without Mortimer? Hmmm.

EDIT: Was Mortimer at Wests when Lamb won the Dally M before going to the Dogs. I don't think so.

Did you watch the youtube clip I posted of Kenny's Lance Todd Trophy winning performance playing outside f*cking Mike Ford - against Sterlo?

Do you remember Kenny keeping Wally Lewis testless in the 1982 kangaroo Tour? Balance that, plus Kenny owning Lewis at Origin level, compared to Terry Lamb's rep career.
