"SOUTH Sydney's historic clash on US soil was a non-event on TV, but the Rabbitohs are making swift moves to ensure their NRL matches are beamed into loungerooms across America.
The Redfern club has been inundated with complaints from irate fans on both sides of the Pacific since Sunday's blackout - a backlash that has only hardened resolve among officials to secure a permanent slot on US pay-TV.
After 12,000 people witnessed Leeds down Souths 26-24 in Jacksonville, co-owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court will attempt to persuade Setanta Sports to program their club's NRL matches this season.
Setanta currently holds the rights to televise every NRL fixture, but until last season only showed one game featuring random teams every four weeks. Rabbitohs fans were stunned the network didn't bother to telecast the Australia Day Challenge, with Channel 9 filming the game instead. Nine is yet to determine when its coverage, which features Crowe commentating, will be screened.
"Rugby league is not on TV in America," said Crowe, who has been based in Los Angeles for much of the past 12 months.
"There's a deal already in place but that particular TV company is not really taking advantage of it. I think Souths got on TV once last season.
"That's something the NRL has got to examine, because that deal is just not good enough. There's a thousand TV channels here. Play it at 1am - who cares? Get it on TV. Get people seeing it."
Holmes a Court said he was already in discussions - independent of the NRL - with Setanta.
"They put the teams on rotation, so everyone gets televised," he said. "Problem is, they don't show the games regularly enough.
"We think that if you put one club on regularly, that will drive up a supporter base - and hence their subscriptions."
A-list celebrities such as Crowe, Greg Norman and his fiancee Chris Evert, and former NBA wildman Dennis Rodman, gave Sunday's experiment a glamour edge. But the reality is Souths will be lucky to break even from the $350,000 trip - despite the club's merchandise selling out on the day.
The two-week venture also presented a challenge to coaching staff and players during pre-season, but Crowe claimed the team would benefit overall."
so russel crowe is spending his time trying to more rl on tv in america. meanwhile nick polites is trying to sell more falcons.
