Reclaiming the name 'RUGBY'

It seems to me certain media organisations are hell bent on reffering to Rugby League as Just 'League' these days , the SMH and fox sports both do this and i find it seems to be creeping into other peoples general conversation.

even this website uses just the 'League' part of our sports name.

To be honest it may only seem a minor thing to some , but i would hate to see it go much further. There are two versions of Rugby and IMO i would hate to see us lose that identity. Especially if its going to be just called 'League' , which couldnt be more non discript.

I dont really care to be called "League".

Rugby Union probably should be called Rugby as they originally owned the title anyway, league was a breakaway competition.

Let the babies have their "Rugby".

We are Rugby League and super ... but not Super League although super Rugby League is fine (just). Sorry, couldn't help it.

Well how much further could it go? And what's the worst that could happen if it did?

Has league ever been played at the Rugby school? I don't think we can claim the name 'Rugby' as our own.

We really are going after the big issues here today aren't we.

Well it could just be called the NL rather than the NRL.

Its important to remember that for the first 9 years of Rugby league from 1895 to 1904 (or so) that the game was played under the 15 a side rule. The original break away had nothing to do with making the game better or different. It was nothing more than a dispute over wages and conditions.

So yes , the origins of Rugby League were played at the rugby school.

as i said in the first post , it may not be a big issue for some. But what the game is called I see as important.

I think you need to do more than assert you that you see it is important. Why is it important?

Even if we were called "international sticking fingers up your nose sport" we'd still be a rugby code and clearly so.

I accept it being called League but I try to refer to the private school wankers game as Union rather than Rugby.

Well the way Unions going it won't be an issue in a decade, most likley there will only be Rugby League.

so... do you think the NRL should change its name to National League League (NLL) to more clearly indicate what sort of sporting league it is?
