Thats just a huge fail now imo, geographically it would have been better for firehawks and dolphins combine bids, whatever the firehawks are lacking the jets aren't going to fill it, it just seems they want to take out the competition by siding with them
Doesn't the Bombers guy at the Jets have strong business connections or something?

The Hawks are a stronger bid than the Jets though. They have a better and more central location, stronger Leagues club and they have already made some big moves in regards to their bid. Both brands are pretty good but Jets will always be tied to Ipswich, an area many in Brisbane look down their nose at. They are definitely running 3rd out of the 3 bids.

Firehawks and Jets combine to become Brisbane Firehawks.

Dolphins and Broncos combine to become Brisbane Dolphins.

I'd love to see Bronco HQ's reaction.

How many people will Brisbane 2 need to draw to each home game to make a profit?

My guess is they will need to draw 20k at Lang Park to break even and make a profit.

How many people will Perth and Adelaide team need to attend their games to break even?
I guess if we go off the two profitable nrl clubs who dont rely on pokies you’d want 25k plus members and 18k plus crowds. Cost for rental of suncorp might push that up, but if it’s true there are lots of companies waiting to sponsor a different brisbane team it might be lower. For Suncorp not to look sht and another anz/sfs soulless empty ground with no atmosphere you be wanting to be drawing 25k plus I’d say.

Perth 20k members and 16k crowds should do it if corporates are on board. Sales of Pirates merch would be massive!

clubs need around $26mill a year. Half that comes from the nrl grant. $6-8mill comes from corporates and sponsorship. The rest, around $5-7mill needs to be fan generated. It shouldn’t be hard. some afl clubs are generating $20mill plus from their fanbase!

Jets and Tigers joining forces would shore up the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich. It would really boost RL and give AwFuL many headaches.

What would they call themselves?
The Jets and Firehawks working together makes them a very strong option especially if (which I assume they are) the original Bombers team are still involved. We can't let the AFL swoop in and take the West and Ipswich. They've already got themselves a stadium built there for a training base and AFLW team. The NRL is really shit at government lobbying. Why haven't they got an NRLW stadium for the Broncs and Women's State of Origin?

Logan is of greater concern with no team in the Queensland Cup or BRL.

Still be Firehawks, I imagine (as that's neither the Brisbane Easts nor Ipswich Qld Cup logo).. but maybe modify the bid colours to orange, green & something?

Not sure what the 3rd colour would be.. blue or yellow or white or black...?? *shrugs*

It would be good if they could get Souths Logan and Wynnum Manly on board, too. That way they will cover the southern side of the Brisbane River.

Redcliffe thread, firehawks have their own.

Rumoured the Dolphins may be keen on Paul Green who has links to the club if they get in. Mind you it was NRL360 so take with a very large pinch of salt!

Paul Green played for Easts Tigers and is from Carina. He was the half-back for Easts when they won their last premiership in 1991 under coach John Lang.

If you look at the dolphins bid site, at the bottom they have a video endorsement of the dolphins by wayne himself, i dare say they haven't publically bothered to target him coz they are already confident he will coach them

The Redcliffe Dolphins walked into a meeting with the ARL Commission’s expansion committee on Monday with an edge over their rivals in the race to become the 17th team. If anything, by day’s end their lead had become even more decisive.
Meetings lasting most of the day with the three bid teams confirmed what many already knew – that the Dolphins are clear-cut favourites to join the NRL. The sense is that only a dramatic turn of events will prevent them being granted the licence.

It is understood the bid teams walked out of the meeting convinced the ARL Commission is still intent on expanding in 2023, meaning time is of the essence to ensure the new franchise is able to field a competitive team.

The three bidders – Redcliffe, the Brisbane Firehawks and the Brisbane Jets – have been given more questions to answer, but a decision is expected to come in a matter of weeks, not months.

There is an ARL Commission meeting later this week to delve further into expansion and likely finalise a timeline for a final decision. ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys has already indicated it will be before the grand final.

It is understood talks with the bidding teams on Monday focused on their weaknesses rather than their strengths. Discussions with the Jets are believed to have predominantly been around their financial strength.

The concerns with the Firehawks is whether they would cannibalise existing clubs. With Redcliffe, one of the primary issues is around getting spectators to attend games at Suncorp Stadium.

The Dolphins and Firehawks are the most financially well-off of the bid teams and it is believed the expansion committee has a leaning towards clubs that don’t rely too much on leagues clubs for the financial support.

On that front, Redcliffe have the advantage of a home ground that generates use through rival sports as well as a shopping centre that guarantees them ongoing revenue.

“We’re obviously still in deliberations. As you can see, the commission is taking this very seriously,” commissioner Kate Jones said.

“Three really strong bids. We understand the gravity of the decision and that is why we have to be very deliberative in our decision making.

“Today was really informative for us to get a great understanding of the different approaches that each bid is making. They have been very upfront with the strength of their proposals.

“We want to make sure if we do make the decision to have a 17th team, it is in the best interests of growing the game. I just want to take this opportunity to assure footy fans not just here in Queensland but across the country that we will only make this decision if it is in the best interests of the game and growing the game into the future.”

Asked the priorities for the commission, Jones said: “We need to ensure we don’t cannibalise existing teams both here in the existing market and across the country, and making sure we are looking at ways to attract new fans to the game and also bring more financial strength to the game.”

Jones acknowledged that to give a new side the chance to field a competitive side, the commission needed to act relatively quickly.

The 17th team will be able to speak to players about the 2023 season from November 1. Among the players coming off contract at the end of 2022 are Dylan Brown, Clint Gutherson, Dylan Edwards, Viliame Kikau, Jack Bird, Cody Walker and Joey Manu.

“We are very aware of the time constraints that each of the bid teams need to build a team in 2023,” Jones said.

“We understand that in regards to attracting players, securing a coach, securing all the administrative side of the game. We are very aware of that.”

The Dolphins spent 90 minutes making their pitch to the Australian Rugby League Commission yesterday to be the 17th NRL team, with a decision most likely to come in October.

Dolphins Chairman Bob Jones, CEO Tony Murphy and NRL bid chief Terry Reader fronted the commission as did representatives from the two other bid clubs – Brisbane Firehawks and Brisbane Jets.

It follows written submissions lodged on June 7, which will be analysed and assessed against the NRL’s criteria.

ARL Commissioner Kate Jones told ABC Radio’s Breakfast program this morning that the commission had asked all clubs for additional information and would work hard to make a decision in October.

“It was clear from all clubs that from November 1, we’ll have a lot of players that they’ll need to engage with so certainly we’re aware of the time constraints and we’ll be working our absolute hardest to make a decision as quickly as possible,” she said.

“Time is of the essence. The commission is well aware of that and certainly we’ll be meeting regularly in the coming weeks to look at all the information.

“Where we left it yesterday … three really strong compelling bids and we’ve certainly asked all three teams for more information and we’ll be taking that all into account when we make our decision.”

Ms Jones said yesterday’s discussion focused on governance and risk, financial viability, commercial strategy, growth of the game and the clubs’ ability to be “football ready” for a possible start in 2023.

Expansion not guaranteed

“It is still ‘if’. Peter V’landys, our Chairman, has made it very clear that through this process he wants the commission, through the teams, to be convinced that there is no risk to the greater game,” she told the ABC.

“There is resistance in other clubs. Certainly, here is Queensland particularly we’re focused on not poaching fans or supporters from the existing clubs, so it’s really about the bid clubs being able to demonstrate that they can grow new fans and have a clear plan to convert fans of footy to come to a game to come to a local derby and also be supporters of the game.”

Ms Jones acknowledged population growth from Caloundra South through the Moreton Bay Region and in the western corridor.

“Clubs were very keen to convince us that they can get new residents coming into this region to follow our code and to have that rivalry. There is a lot to be said for two teams in close quarters coming to Suncorp Stadium and having that local competitiveness and tribalism, so these are all the things that we’ll consider,” she said.
Dolphins’ NRL bid chief Terry Reader said: “Our catchment area is the fastest growing area in Queensland, if not Australia. We will appeal to Brisbane, Moreton Bay Region and the Sunshine Coast areas – and beyond”.

“It’s got to stack up and we think that ours does – when you look at the key areas … financial viability being able to stand on your own two feet we think that we don’t have a peer in that area.

Mr Reader said the Dolphins were in a position to hit the ground running the moment they were given the green light, with all the necessary infrastructure in place, and a from a solid financial position to ensure it would be a stable and viable NRL club.

“The club is very well set up and has all of the infrastructure to go tomorrow,” he said.

He said the Dolphins were "NRL-ready" and would not be faced with high start-up costs that could face other clubs without the necessary infrastructure. It’s already there.

If the club gets the green light, the focus would immediately be on recruiting staff and building a competitive roster of players.

"The Dolphins have been preparing for this since 1988 and have not deviated from the ultimate goal to deliver rugby league at the highest level of competition to the club again and if the NRL were to award us the licence tomorrow, we are ready to go... We are NRL-ready," Mr Reader said.

"We've got the facilities, we have the political backing as well as the financial backing, the guarantee is there from our diversified business for the NRL. We have three established stadiums to host games including our very own stadium. We have an already established brand with Queensland’s largest junior club base and a proven pathways and participation system that will only be supercharged with NRL entry.

"We guarantee certified growth to the game with our local population catchment that is one of the largest and fastest growing regions QLD but most of all, we have a new fan base that is currently un-serviced by an NRL team and ready to enjoy NRL action.

"We believe we will provide the NRL with the peace of mind and confidence to expand the competition with the Dolphins and look forward to continuing the dialogue to help them reach a decision."

The Dolphins are the Queensland Cup's most successful club, appearing in 12 Grand Finals and winning six Premierships since 1996.

Thought I’d try a few different shades of gold to see which looks best with red. I’m assuming if they get the bid they’ll stick with red as their main colour and I believe they’ve said they’d add gold as a trim

Go a darker red, but the lighter gold, looking for the 49ers type colors, so add in white too, maybe the roosters style cuffs
