Flying into Sydney airport this morning ( yeah, I'm a high roller) I was shocked to see what a small area Cronulla is.

It is surrounded by water to the east, north and south and St George/Illawarra has them surrounded West and dwarfs the Sharks in area size.

No wonder they struggle to fill an 11k stadium.

geography not your strong point hey!! And the Shire is still growing and adding suburbs! The whole south shire is missing off this map so the purple area is actually another 25% bigger than shown.

You worked out the size of 2 geographical areas by just looking through the window of a plane lol, indeed you are truly are a high roller..

Maybe 50 years ago you had a case re population sizes but not now, jump on google maps and compare Sutherland Shire to Canterbury/ Bankstown they're roughly the same or the much smaller Souths or Sydney Roosters patches.
The Dragons have a large area thanks to the Merger.

Ah, the annual "The Storm will struggle" thread on LU

- They won't survive without Brett Kimmorley
- Chris Anderson leaving will kill them
- Once Greg Inglis leaves, they will be average.
- Without Billy Slater they are done
- No Cam Smith, no top 4

It's 25 years and counting now

I'll add another one
- Adding The Dolphins to the NRL will weaken mainly the Southeast Qld teams- which includes Melbourne Storm, they might be based in Melb but they're a SE Qld team.

it will force the clubs to invest and develop juniors and over time strengthen the game.

It's clubs like the Rorters that are a blight on the game - develop no one, and cherry pick other clubs best juniors at around 16 - 17 yrs of age and declare them home grown once they make an NRL debut.

And yet the Shire has 2nd most juniors in Sydney town. Better to be surrounded by water than telegraph poles.
And a huge park with critters in it.
They actually fill the stadium, which will have its capacity lifted this year when the retail/club building is complete.Fills sponsorship .Has already built up assets money making Kareela club and a retail bldg for rent in the Main Street.
BTW interested to know which grounds these other clubs own. Population continues to grow with younger families moving in.
NRL thought it was OK they spent $20m on a hotel attached to the field for accommodation.
When you fly into the Gold Coast with a population over 600K+(more than twice the Sharks population) and a large area and you have a u beaut stadium that average 17K with a 25 plus capacity. It's all relative.

It solves 2 problems. 1: Cronulla not being a big enough geographical area and 2: Perth get a team .
The comp looks noticeably better with this move.
Currently the sharks are wedged between the Dragons and the Dragons... they could have a whole state.
Sutherland Shire is plenty big enough to sustain a RL team. At grassroots, the Sutherland comp is bigger than East’s, South’s, Wests, Canterbury and St G, so again proving it is big enough. The Sharks are based on one of Sydney’s more parochial areas, which gives it more potential than many other Sydney clubs. Paint that peninsular Black, White and Blue. That will suffice.
I disagree. Shark Park is better than Optus as it’s the proper shape plus it’s not in Perth.
HBF Park is a rectangle dude.

Cronulla-SUTHERLAND Sharks. It’s not just Cronulla man. I remember reading maybe five years ago that the Sutherland Shire has the nation’s biggest junior sports participation figures. You don’t just give up on an area like that and leave it for the rest of your competitors to go and party in.

Relocating Sydney clubs is a very short sighted solution. In fact it’s a backwards decision. The NRL knows this and avoiding bankruptcy, there will be no relocations of any existing NRL clubs. It’s up to the new destinations to build a business case strong enough that the NRL can’t refuse.
