Reminders of your childhood

I love this thread. So many memories.

It was such a treat to go to the cafeteria at Grace Brothers in Penrith back in the day. It was upstairs hidden behind the furniture section. It was still operating until 89 or 90 when the complex was demolished to make way for the current Westfields. I remember I loved sliding the tray along the metal rail while deciding what to get. Mum used to get her hair done at the hairdressers just near it & that was the payoff for sitting at the hairdressers & being well behaved while she got her hair done.

Speaking of Hairdressers, I loved going with my old man to the barbers. They had People mags & Australia Post magazines, so to get to see a few sets of tits as a young fella was a real treat. They also used to sell Beechies chewing gum. I remember they had heaps of odd flavours compared to the standard flavours.

This little fella was around a long time before Krispy Creme came to Australia.
Downy Flake donuts , used to go the store on the corner of Elizabeth St and Liverpool St in the city opposite Mark Foys and Museum Station.

Which corner of that intersection was the shop? I remember Jimmy Carruthers' vegetarian takeaway was on the N/W corner back in the 80s. I've never been a vegetarian but they made some sensational food.

I remember most of those ice-creams but certainly not the "Good Humor" LOL. And the colour of the Gaytime is interesting. Triple Treat was my favourite. The ice-cream had a certain marshmallow-like consistency.

Yes i cant remember the Good Humor either. Loved Triple Treats and also the Two in One, the strawberry and pineapple combination was great.

Australasian Post had many attractive people on their covers in order to entice a purchase.

Same lady as below:

Claudia Cardinale.

The comparison reminds me of the Ginger v Mary-Anne Gilligan’s Island debate.

I think the first photo, she looks ravishing but consider it carefully, the photography and posing gives as much effect as the topic.

Below is the ugly face of what passes for female beauty today.

Role model and teenager social influencer.. although some say, this Ill-conceived performance destroyed her career.

So much for equality, looks like she had a tongue extension and the tattooist was stoned. Looks like a gremlin vomiting or something. Yicch!

Hey I’ve kept one of these ads on my old Betamax too!

I had a beta camera and machine:

It was much much better quality than VHS!

VHS was for the tech illiterates, I know I felt superior until the video store stopped renting beta. It was a tough time.

Dick Smith went broke because he didn’t back the right format all those years ago.

I don’t remember the jingle, but Dick keeps turning up on the net trying to sell me something. Don’t know what. I’d click on it, if beta was mentioned.

And avoid clicking on these ads all over LU...

The first giveaway was his face with a New Zealand flag ...

Sadly class died years ago and was replaced by “look at me!”

I find these old ad reels fascinating... and funny how I remember a lot of them. And often wonder what happened to many of the companies.

Does Prima still exist?

Yeah I was thinking that as well.

A sister stood over my shoulder and watched dick Smith and laughed. But what red blooded Aussie kid wouldn’t want all those toys. Speak and spell!

She spent part of the night looking at contemporary aboriginal art for her new collection.

She’s interested in a camp dog, but these critters can get very expensive ( $5k + ).

I have a couple of large real dogs ( no cat problem here), but I wouldn’t mind old Rex featured below.

I’d put him near the front door to ward off bunyips and bad spirits.

Looks like he’s in a museum though, so no go:

I think Horrie might like one too, he seems to see right past the day to day.

Fido reminds me of mambo stuff, but I’d say camp dogs pre-date Reg Mombassa.

I reckon camp dog he’s awesome, Reg is a pretty good artist too.

I know in some aboriginal lore, a dog can live as a ghost, a spirit dog and they can come back and seen as if they are alive. And I know someone who has said they’ve seen one. I wonder if camp dogs are like entombed warriors?!

Right. That little row of shops was demolished in the early 90s. A new building was opened on the corner in 1993. I only remember the year because the company I worked for was the first tenant. Interestingly, the building that opened in 1993 was itself demolished a few years ago and replaced with a much taller building. It certainly didn't last long as far a buildings go.

We also had a beta. I remember the local Video Ezy had 2 floors with a floor dedicated to each format. Then at one point the number of Beta shelves started shrinking and shrinking week by week.

Betamax just didn't want to share its proprietary technology. I think Apple almost made the same mistake.
