You'd think that if Maryanne is gonna go to the trouble of hiding an avocado, she'd hide a whole one . . .

The professor found himself talking to groups of scientists at conferences, when in real life, he fought bravely and won a Purple Heart before turning to acting.

He could’ve built the first fusion power plant and maybe designed the internet from bamboo, rocks and vines, but of he couldn’t fix the Minnow.

The millionaires wife was indeed an actual millionaire in real life, but gave a lot of it away to charity before she passed on. I duff Gilligans cap in her honour.

A wonderful group of actors and people.

Just getting flashbacks of the awkward porno aisle that you walked down to get a cheeky glance.

Then our enterprising video Ezy started to intersperse them with the new releases.

Emmanuelle and those kinds of soft porn ones... remember the those awkward glances into those aisles too while mum was distracted..

Its funny how the opening credits of Gilligans Island never mentioned the Professor and Mary Anne in the first season [ they were referred to and the rest ], they didn't appear in the credits till season 2, apparently Bob Denver said he walk out if they weren't include in the credits and he got his way.

A pilgrimage to Sutherland today for work and of course a visit to the Chinese/ Australian take away to purchase a standard burger.

This is their factory stock bottom of the range burger. Cooked up late afternoon.

The closest in price I could find in mainstream junk food tonight was this number below from one of the larger overseas franchises featured on DAW tv, on YouTube. He grabs one of his kids and does take away food reviews. Good luck to him!

I will let the panel here decide which one is the better feed of the two.

My cook today looked very professional in a proper take away uniform, food hat and mask. Very good customer service. Efficient and friendly. An authentic accent from overseas ( we had that in 1970s too!)

Just on the Coke front, the shop presented with $2.20 cold cans, which I know I can buy locally out yonder west here for $1.00 -$1.50 max. Petrol is also a bit pricey down there. If you are like me, odds on that the car only gets quite low when either:

a) prices skyrocket the night before
b) you are a fair way from home.

I guess it’s a shire mark-up.

Todays burger lacked the traditional beetroot, but was otherwise delicious. I have no idea why beetroot is mandatory, but like many things, just how things roll. It was an option on more pricey burgers, a sign of the times.

The old school burger is a thing of beauty, the old milk bar/take aways that sell them are a dying breed but when you still find a place that does them there is just no comparison to the hideous things that overseas franchises spew out.
A old school beef burger should always have beetroot on it, Pauls hamburgers at Sylvania offer it as a free optional extra, the place i go to on Gardners Road at Rosebery called Evergreen puts beetroot on their burgers, while i will say they are not the best burgers i have ever had they are always consistent , tasty and made with love, a Greek family have had the business there for years.

As for petrol i notice when i drive from St Peters down to the south coast the different pricing zones
From St Peters[ with the exception of the BPs] down to Tempe and Arncliffe the petrol is usually reasonable, then when you pass Rockdale then down to Blakehurst to the Tom Uglys Bridge the prices jump but once you cross Tom Uglys the price go through the roof and remain that way till you leave the Sydney out skirts.

Thanks for that contribution and I agree with your thoughts 100%.

I was looking at the franchise burger in the photo, just the colour of it, my honest view pale and sickly grey in comparison to the local vendor.

The other thing is that little vendor has skin in the game. They live or die by their last burger.

Over time, I’ve detected an appreciable lack of accuracy at the drive through. So one local multinational, they got 4 out of 5 orders wrong in a row and I’m not talking large meals.

I wonder if our education system is letting us down if a high percentage of these kids can’t count to 4.

I’m not rude to them, as they are trying, but I think they need to employ older workers.

I complained once, they offered my anything, and all I wanted was accuracy because I’m sick of getting home and someone misses out.

They should have an additional window where you can stop and check your order and give it back when it’s wrong.

Pretty much the day is coming when robots will be sorting out the orders and they won’t make many mistakes.

But your local hamburger shop, it is often your best bet. Not as much Russian roulette.

Back in the day, when I was working in food shops, we got almost everything right. You still got flogs for customers, but as you know, about 99% of people are pretty fair.

I saw a parts interpreter run after a customer wanting to belt him once. The customer accused him of lying and being a racist. He wasn’t lying and he wasn’t being racist. The guy just didn’t want to pay the freight.

I have actually never used the drive thru at any of the franchises, i like going in and having time to browse the boards before i decide. In saying that i haven't set foot inside a Maccas since 2000, was sick after it back then so never wanted it again, even when customers walk into the store with Maccas from the centre i work in the smell puts me off. Haven't had Hungry Jacks for a couple of years now but don't mind them every now and then.
The one thing that gets me about some of the younger ones behind the counter of my local KFC or Woolies is they cant work change out properly, say if something is $15. 25 and you give them a $20 note and then the 25c after it they get the panicked look in their eyes because they have already punched $20 into the register and they may have to use their brains for a few seconds to work out the change difference.

The evergreen facade, gets about 5 stars on the google review. Highly thought of.

To be honest, I know Canberra better than I know our Eastern Suburbs.

Unless we are holidaying, the closest my kids get to a beach is watching Bondi Rescue. That it’s in their city....might surprise them!

Look at the signage “B B B Q“ Chicken. That’s authentic illiteracy. It sends the right message, who cares?!

I’m kind of glad we don’t get too upset about spelling these days, even abbreviations! For you youngsters reading, back in the day, it was the Queens English only. It took a lot of immigration and laziness to conquer what was usually yet a way of putting people down. Lol anyway, I’m glad the owners have kept it. It’s fun.

Contrary to old world beliefs, according to the google reviews, the error doesn’t reflect the quality of food, prices or the excellent service.

Lol, to be honest i have never noticed the B B B Q Chicken before because if i'm driving past my eyes are on the road and when i go in i'm usually on the foot path underneath the facade so i miss it, i notice the sign above the door has the correct B B Q Chicken . With all the terrible shortening and abbreviations that pass these days i'm happy for the B B B Q as you say its fun and it was innocent back then, not like some of the shocking lazy abbreviations that pass these days.
My order when i go in is a cheese burger with added pineapple, i always like tomato sauce on my burger, better half likes BBQ sauce, we always order a plate of chips to share, its not earth shattering food but its great comfort food and i always feel good when i leave there.

Another place where i grab a burger from every now and then is the business centre take away on Unwins Bridge Road St Peters, again, hardly earth shattering but just a good tasty burger which is only 5 mins from home but not as good as Evergreen or most likely your place in Sutherland but very convenient for me.

When the strangeness of covid was setting in i remember going for a walk around Botany Bay/Cooks River and walked past a place called Andy's seafood on Bestic St Kyeemagh , i looked in the window and the potato scallops looked beautiful so i went in and ordered some to share with the better half, while i was waiting the order before me was for burgers and i watched the owner assemble them and they looked pretty good so would like to try one one day. By the way loved the potato scallops, seemed home made not horrible frozen ones.

Home made scallops, you are making me hungry!

Herewith some further Sutherland fare:

Compare the thickness of the chips to a multinational version:

C7DC460D-AA14-4091-8F61-BF44E4A52B8C.jpeg
Which are usually drenched in salt and who knows what chemicals after picking. I remember the meat slime scare and bright red colouring fiasco.

Moving over to Andy’s thus:

332947F9-6F4A-4D07-A3CB-8035182BFE0C.jpeg

I did a quick price check and the scallops are double the price of Sutho, but a lot of items such as seafood sticks etc are indeed cheaper!

That’s part of the local experience, the unexplained pricing.

But if he’s making the scallops fresh, yeah I’m prepared to take out a second mortgage for quality.

I went a bit ballistic on the food front at Sutho, not a regular habit, but every dog should have his day and the odd indulgence offsets the work headache.

Anyone remember/visit the Busy Bee truck stop on the old princes highway at Helensburgh?

They used to do old school burgers the size of your head. Would need an afternoon nap after defeating one of them..

I reckon they are home made but cant be a 100% certain, they come in different shape and sizes and they don't have that horrible pre prepared fatty taste the frozen ones get, when i ordered 4 last time i got 6 for the price, their chips are pretty good too, i did order a piece of fish one visit, it was suppose to be snapper and probably was but was a bit underwhelmed with it. Their battered savs were ok, haven't tried their seafood sticks, i know they really shouldn't even be considered seafood but every now and then i just feel like one or two.

As for fish and chips i have a couple of places i like going to
Lifeboat at Brooklyn is my favourite, not cheap, fish grilled, crumbed or battered with chips and salad cost between $28-$35 but the variety of fish is amazing at times, whiting, gurnard, flathead, snapper, barramundi, jew fish, mullet, black fish, bream and morwong , most of it is local from the Hawksebury or just outside, they have all the fish displayed in the window, i usually go for the gurnard or black fish, sometimes grilled sometimes fried. They make their own chips and their prawn cutlets are sensational even at $3.50 each.

If i'm down the south coast Burrill Lake fish shop is hard to beat, everything is fried there, they have the usual suspects such as sea food sticks etc but their fish is fresh, latchet and flathead on the menu, morwong [sea bream] and what else is in season, great oysters too, chips are pretty good and one small serve is enough for 2 people.

Another called Pelican Rocks at Greenwell Point has won countless awards, have dined there a few times, their oysters and prawns are good, fish beside the blue grenadier [which is one of most fish shop staples besides basa and shark] they have black fish, leatherjacket and flathead, the down side is they use steak cut chips, have to admit i was horrified when i saw them on the menu as when you have them with a pub lunch they are usually fatty and horrible but they actually do them well, must be the fresh oil they use, still would like proper chips though.

Another i will give a wrap but don't go to often is Ocean Blue at Budgewoi, mainly because they do hand cut chips which are good but they also have on the menu home made pumpkin scallops, haven't tried them as of yet but will one visit.

Dont remember that one but better half always raves about one in Dapto when the highway used to go through there, it was either called Juicy Lucy's or Juicy Jaws.

I used to like the burgers from Deno's diner at Tempe where Harry's is now, they also did a killer foot long hot dog.

It was around up until the 90’s or so. Was a main truck stop back in the day until they built the F3. But even then the trucks would still divert there for a feed. It shut down though.

I also remember a Henry's burger joint on the Princes Hwy Kogarah near President Ave, it was originally a Hartees burger shop in the early 70s before the chain got closed down when they were caught using dog food for their burgers, certain Henry's was there till some time in the mid 90s maybe even later.

Anyone remember / have one of these?

Bongo Van!

My old man did very briefly, but it caught fire near Waterfall.

I can’t remember seeing one of these in at least 20 years. Assume they’re extinct from spontaneous combustion...

I remember them but you probably gave the main reason why they became extinct, i have heard a few stories of them catching fire.
