Anyone remember seeing this guy standing on the side of the Princes Highway in the mornings?

r0_93_2000_1217_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

He stood there every weekday for years and years. Until he died in 2007.

Used to see him often, usually on a Sunday when driving back from the south coast or even just Rockdale to St Peters, used to call him the UFO man, there was even stuff on his unit window where he lived right near where he would stand. I assumed he had died when i didn't see him after a while.

I remember the window. On the highway between Tempe and Arncliffe Road, on the Arncliffe (western) side? 1980-90s? A long time ago now.

We actually have a very similar looking guy on the Gold Coast who hangs out around Chevron Island-Broadbeach Waters with an even bigger sign - sandwich board (it is the GC afterall). He promotes Jesus and warns us about compulsory voting.

Yes on the Princes Hwy just down from the corner of Forest Rd at Arncliffe.

On the theme of random public identities.... and I know this topic has been explored in the dragons forums at times...

The Peanuts Man..

I don't have a photo but Peanuts Man used to tread the grass on the hills of Kogarah Jubilee and Belmore Sports Ground on match days, well dressed with a black bag over his shoulder selling peanuts. He'd simply walk around saying "peanuts... peanuts... peanuts".....

Anyone remember him, or where he is now?? (hopefully still with us...)

Sure he had a middle-eastern background (some had suggested he was Lebanese). My memory is he was around up until the mid-late 90's. But could be longer than that.

Any dragons fan of that era should remember him. And in recent years on the Kogarah Hill i'd regularly ask openly to the crowd around me whatever happened to the peanuts man - and I'd get various reactions akin to "ohhhh thats right I remember him)... but no one could tell me.

And as a footnote, I'm sure in his early days (or at least when I first saw him) he was carrying a black "beachcombers" bag - which I remember as a kid in the 70's as one of the most popular schoolbags going around. Black with "BEACHCOMBERS" in white print, on vinyl material (or similar). But alas I can't find a pic.

So - effectively a double-barreled "Reminder" post here..

If anyone remembers Peanuts Man and/or beachcombers school bags (especially a photo) I'd look forward to your replies..

I remember a guy at the Sports Ground also selling peanuts, he would walk around saying peanuts, peanuts, in the shell or candy coated, can still see his face clearly even now, wonder if it was the same guy ? i remember him with a black bag also but not certain whether it was a beachcombers bag.

Was string guy that before you turned left to get to East West, TAA and Ansett or afterwards?

View attachment 46150

My first ever flight was on East West to Gilgai Airport, which is the Inverall Airport, such an adventure by myself as a nine year old . Think my last flight on East West was to Melbourne some time in the mid 80s, also flown to Port Macquarie with them.
Ansett had flown plenty of times even when i was young to Casino when we went to Evans Head for holidays , sometime it was a direct flight, sometimes it would go via Coffs Harbour, think my last flight on Ansett was to Brisbane sometime in the early 90s. Must of flown TAA also as i remember the ticket and ticket stub but couldn't tell you where to.

Thanks Horrie, top of the line b&w and jingle.

Those holiday makers, they look really happy horse riding, zoos, beach, hotel pool, kids look excited, meeting indigenous, regal dancing, all good family fun.

Sure there were some unfair attitudes in the mainstream, but there were also some good things.

I was lucky to fly as a kid when it was really expensive.

When I was a bit older I saw Dionne Warwick in Queensland while on a holiday and she was amazing. Beautiful voice and sunny personality. It was a great night. Plenty of slow gin and tonics with an crowd that was a bit older, but I didn’t care.

Bacharach and David wrote songs specifically for her enchanting voice. Brought a lump to the throat when she hit those low notes live.

My cousin was a stewardess. Very glamorous and she drove a brand new Gemini. Bucket seats!

Sorry John I don’t think I’ve ever been to Jubilee Oval. I’d like to go one day and suck up the sgi atmosphere.

I’ve had some good times at Endeavour though and one night there, a too cool for school, Brandy coming down from the commentary box, he snubbed me.

Compare that to Craig Foster I accidentally met near the bar at a Manchester U or Arsenal or something v Sydney exhibition. He shook my hand and was very friendly asked me about the match. I don’t follow the soccer -I had ratted the tickets from a corporate mate of a mate. I don’t think we knew where the tix came from!

It was a good night and Foster made it better! He does a lot of charity work for refugees. Legend.

I’m reckoning it could be the same bloke.

Balding fella with black hair. Always wore trousers with a button-up shirt.

I’ve heard some brilliant things about Craig Foster. My best mate is a Politician and has met him a number of times, couldn’t speak highly enough of him.

I’ve not ever heard feedback on anyone meeting Alexander. I personally don’t like his commentary and attitude on telly. Your feedback doesn’t surprise me but hey, he might just have been having a bad day.

That’s true.

It’s good to know a pollie, get in his ear lol!

I think Australians we like our celebs to give a bit back to the community.

Brandy and a lot ex players are pretty lazy in commentary in the sense that they describe stuff and don’t really analyse. Brandy snarls a lot.

Theyve got Seibs doing an nrl show on their website at the moment and I am quite enjoying it!

I believe that both Ginger and Mary Anne have passed on to the big ‘ Gilligan's Island ‘ in the sky Silverdale .

Great show that certainly gave many laughs . :relaxed:

I think Ginger is still going Gareth.

The beautiful Dawn Wells only passed away recently.

I am in a Ginger phase at the moment!
